11 best handheld slide viewers
A handheld slide viewer is a device used for viewing photographic slides or transparencies. It is often used by photographers, hobbyists, and professionals to inspect and review individual slides. Handheld slide viewers are designed to provide a focused and illuminated view of the slide, allowing users to examine the details and quality of the image.
Here are some key features and aspects of handheld slide viewers:
Light Source: Handheld slide viewers typically have a built-in light source, which illuminates the slide from behind. This backlighting helps to make the image on the slide visible and clear.
Magnification: Many slide viewers include a magnifying lens to enlarge the image on the slide, making it easier to see details. The level of magnification can vary between different models.
Power Source: Handheld slide viewers can be powered by various means. Some are battery-powered, while others may require an external power source or connection to an electrical outlet.
Portability: These viewers are designed to be portable and easy to carry, allowing photographers to review their slides on the go. They are compact and lightweight, making them convenient for fieldwork.
Adjustable Focus: Some handheld slide viewers offer adjustable focus settings to ensure that the image is sharp and clear.
Compatibility: Depending on the design, slide viewers may be compatible with different sizes of slides, such as 35mm, 120mm, or other formats.
Construction: They are typically made of durable materials to protect the slides and the internal components.
Use Cases: Handheld slide viewers are used for various purposes, including quality control in photography, selecting images for printing or publication, and simply enjoying a collection of slides.
While handheld slide viewers are distinct from door viewers and door hardware locks, they share the common thread of being tools related to hardware and home improvement. Each of these tools serves a specific purpose within its respective domain. Slide viewers are focused on photography and visual inspection, while door viewers and hardware locks are designed for security and access control in residential or commercial settings.

Question: | How big is the screen |
Answer: | If shaking it upside down does not work, try using tweezers. |
Question: | how to remover the back to put in the batteries? Ours won't budge |
Answer: | I also have old slides from the 60’s and 70’s and use the slot on top/back of the Medalight viewer rather than the side slots and this works fine. I use the button on the bottom right to eject the slides. Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the screen size |
Answer: | It may depend on the specific model. check the HP compatibility chart here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05166879 |
Question: | Do i have a medalight viewer, or is it a zuma? labeled a medalight and so ordered. zuma received |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Somebody told me to shake it: i can't find that message. this doesn't work: there are two slides in there. can i take it apart |
Answer: | No it does not |
Question: | My slides are the older ones from the 70's, with the cardboard boarders, my slides wont fit in slot on left side, are there larger slide viewers |
Answer: | Simply put, no. This projector's aspect ratio is 4:3, and can accurately project an image between 40-330in at a distance of 5.4-37ft. Taking all that into account, I did the trigonometry to figure out the minimum distance required to display an image with dimensions of 12ftx14ft. To sum up, you would need to have the projector at a distance of around 30ft from whatever you're projecting onto. On top of that, the cords are on the back, so laying the projector down to point it at the ceiling will be quite difficult. I hope this answers your question successfully. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do you install driver software first, then connect and power up scanner or other way around |
Answer: | I use the Godox Xpro-S. I love the Godox products. |
Question: | What is the best THIRD PARTY (not bundled SilverFast) scanning software to use, that uses the Infrared scanning feature for dust and scratch removal |
Answer: | Hello, yes it is Imaging Edge, you can download it for free from our website. It comes with three pieces of software, Remote to shoot tethered or wireless depending on your camera model. Edit, to develop your RAW images, combine pixel shift pictures and View to review and organize your pictures. |
Question: | Will it work with mac's new os, high sierra |
Answer: | Yup, really nice to not have 4K limitations time limitation. Wish it would be possible with the A7R III with firmware |
Question: | There are so many bad reviews for this product. What's a better alternative at this price range |
Answer: | a7R3 with MC-11 adapter for Canon lenses "hunts" a LOT and for me was not acceptable except to use on manual for macro work. Thus, I expect the adapters will not work for the R4 either. You would not want to buy this great camera and then use Canon lenses. Besides the functionality questions, from a business perspective, Canon and Nikon are getting so far behind Sony and are way undercapitalized compared to Sony, I see their problem getting worse and Sony continuing to rapidly gain market share. The value of my Canon lenses dropped dramatically in the time it took me to bite the bullet and sell all my Canon equipment. |

This function helps protect precious pictures against destruction and loss. Starting with 16-bit depth digital files gives the best chance of making the finest prints from the analog photography film.

All in all, with the top-version SilverFast software, it helps make a difference to the scanning results and ensures to archive the film in an optimal way.
Remark: The Expert Mode could be enabled by clicking on the small icon which is a doctor's hat as the button on each of the software features.
Powerful Color Management System
Accurate color is the basis for those who want to make sure the colors are exactly as they want because one image might look different when it is viewed in a light booth, viewed on different monitors, or even printed on different printers. The color difference leads to confusion and feelings. Therefore, color management is an important topic for those who are very serious about their photography and artworks. Color management is the process of controlling the way colors are represented across various devices.
OpticFilm 8200i Ai gives the best solution for calibrating the color and easy workflow. With the 35mm IT8 target and the auto IT8 calibration tool of SilverFast Ai Studio, color calibrates the film scanner in just two mouse click and 2 minutes. It can analyze the scanned file to characterize the specific color reading capabilities and compares the measuring table, which is built per under the ISO-Norm 12641, to a reference file associated with your color target. The difference between the two is mapped into and generates its unique color profile. The calibration and characterization of image devices help ensure that during the production process, an image is reproduced as accurately as possible.
iSRD - a highly reliable and comprehensive solution for infrared-based dust and scratch removal.
Slides and negatives always have small dust particles and tiny scratches on them, even when handled very carefully. Removing them one-by-one takes a tremendous amount of time, since often hundreds or thousands of small defects (dust grains or lint) are found on the original image, which only becomes visible after digitization. PlustekOpticFilm has a reliable solution to this problem.
The OpticFilm 8200i scanner has an infrared channel that finds all the the dust and scratches on the film surface. The infrared light has a very wide wave-length, which allows it to pass through film emulsion of negatives and slides without resistance, as opposed to scratches and dust particles that reflect it.
iSRD utilizes this behavior as follows (Automatic)
- Step 1 : Use white light for regular RGB scan.
- Step 2 : Use infrared scan that captures defects like dust and scratches only.
- Step 3 : Maker the dust and scratch on image.
- Step 4 : Calculative dust and scratch removal takes effect, only where the infrared channel has detected any defects without losing any important details.
In conclusion, OpticFilm 8200i Series can automatically remove the dust and scratches from the scanned image.
Dust and scratches are removed during the scanning process, eliminating the need for post-process removal.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug |
Answer: | While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine. |
Question: | Can this scan 120 film |
Answer: | With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer. |
Question: | Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement |
Answer: | I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative. |
Question: | Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card |
Answer: | Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product. |

User questions & answers
Question: | It used to be that after photos are taken and still in the camera when roll is removed it cannot be exposed to light. How does this work |
Answer: | U can look up YouTube how to pull out w the screw, inside is 35mm and it does work w this scanner |
Question: | Does this unit save directly to a computer or do you have to save to SD Card and then to the computer |
Answer: | Yes. The scanner records the images (JPG) on removable media like a camera or directly to the computer via USB cable (included). You can transfer via USB or by removing the media and transferring it that way |
Question: | Does the type of media inserted determine the number of megapixels an image is converted to |
Answer: | There is no tray, you push the 1st slide in. It is not in the center for the picture to show completely so you use the 2nd slide to push the 1st slide in position and after digitizing the 1st slide you continue to push the 2nd slide all the way in. The 1st slide is not yet all the way out so you push the 3rd slide in a little way so you can get the 1st slide out. Continue with all your slides. Once you do about 10-15 slides it become very routine and works well. |
Question: | The ntsc out is really useless, only way to get digital images is to write to the sd card, correct |
Answer: | I don’t know about the dpi but it is 14.0 megapixels (4320 X 3252). Much better than the old slides we have scanned in! |

User questions & answers
Question: | The white plastic front is dirty inside. Can it be detached to clean? Does it click off and on, or would that break it? Is there any way to clean it |
Answer: | There is a frame behind |
Question: | what is the magnification level |
Answer: | The screen is a vinyl material (shipped in a roll), that is mounted onto a rigid frame. I don't know if it would work well for your situation, but the roll of material might be useful without the frame - if you can keep it flat. |
Question: | I read where someone used a viewer like this as a makeshift optical viewfinder for a digital camera LCD screen, because of sunlight glare; opinions |
Answer: | I do not know. It is not really an ALR, nor is it acoustically transparent (that would run you thousands of dollars for a 120. Nonetheless, it is a great screen for a 4k VAVA UST. |
Question: | Is this good for looking at old slides |
Answer: | Its not. ALR or ambient light rejection screens for ultra short throw projectors are gray. This is matte white. This is best for completely dark rooms. |
Question: | The pana-vue 2 fell apart when i removed it from the box and is now in seven pieces, including a small brass tab. how do i reassemble it |
Answer: | Hello, Thanks for your interest and inquiry, this series only offers the CineWhite option in 2.35:1 aspect ration in 103" 115" 138" diagonal. I hope this helps in your decision and please feel free to contact us direct should you have any additional questions. Best Miguel P. Elite Screens |
Question: | Does this work for 2" X 2" slides |
Answer: | The middle of the screen is about 3/4" of an inch off the wall....The outside edges are a bit over 3" full inches from the wall. I have been very impressed with the screen. |
Question: | Can you project the pictures on a screen or wall |
Answer: | Hello Brendan, Thanks for your question, I am sorry to hear that your item was received in this condition. I urge you to contact us directly so we can send you a replacement part or the materials to remedy this scratch. Please contact via [email protected] or call us at 1-877-511-1211 ext.237 Hope to hear from you soon.Best,Elite Sceens |
Question: | Does it have a locking light bar |
Answer: | no, we've had it for 1-1/2 years and absolutely love it......we bought a Epson HD projector with it |
Question: | Does it use batteries |
Answer: | Hello,This is white. You should alwasy get a white screen, as gray should only be used for very old projectors. There is a myth out there that it's ok to use with today's projector, but this is definitely not the case, so you should definitely stick with the Reference Studio 4K White material. Thanks,EluneVision |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i purchase the slide viewer on the $45 film slide scanner eparately? i have lost mine |
Answer: | Not sure. I went through the manual and found no reference to 127. I only used it for 35mm slide format which also included 126 film cut into a 35mm slide. I will try to convert some photos when I can get some. Could not have been more pleased with ease of operation or results. |
Question: | Is the software 64-bit? macs with catalina os will not run 32-bit programs. thanks |
Answer: | I don’t know I returned it as I wasn’t happy with it. Couldn’t get it to work properly. |
Question: | will this accept 2 5/8 size slides |
Answer: | Which/what mode? |
Question: | can I scan aps (Advantix) film cannisters |
Answer: | This might indicate a need to format your sd card. This can be done easily in a digital camera that accepts one. You need to find that function in the camera's menu. It can also be done in a computer. Google the procedure for your particular operating system. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the ac adapter dual voltage ac 100-250v compatible, or is it just an ac 120v adapter |
Answer: | The ac adapter is ac 100-240v, 50/60hz compatible, according to the tiny print on the adapter end that plugs into wall current. |
Question: | does anyone know how to program the scanner to automatically stop scanning after 50 slides (the size of the tray |
Answer: | I use this fine product in my job. The answer to your question is in the software. Open the program. Go to the upper left, hit "scan", go to "multi-scan". In the lower part of the box, type in the "range". For Example 1-50 for the entire tray. |
Question: | Does this work using operating system macos high sierra |
Answer: | I use the latest Apple Mac OS---you should be fine |
Question: | Can I use this to scan 35mm negatives. If the answer is yes, how automated (if at all) is the process |
Answer: | Yes, but you have to cut and mount the negative in 35mm slide holders first. Then it is just as automated as slides. If you main purpose is slides, but you have an occasional negative, this will work. If your main purpose is negatives, chose a film scanner instead of this device. |
