Outdoor wood putty, also known as wood filler, is a versatile material used in woodworking and home improvement projects. It is specifically designed for repairing and filling gaps, cracks, and imperfections in outdoor wooden surfaces. Here's what you need to know about outdoor wood putty:
Composition: Outdoor wood putty is typically a mixture of wood fibers, binders, and additives. It is formulated to be durable and weather-resistant, making it suitable for outdoor applications.
Purpose:
Repairing Wood: Wood putty is commonly used to repair damaged or rotted wood in outdoor structures like decks, fences, and wooden furniture. It can fill holes, gouges, and cracks, restoring the wood's appearance and structural integrity.
Sealing Joints: Wood putty can also be used to seal joints and gaps in wooden structures, preventing water infiltration and moisture damage.
Outdoor Use: Outdoor wood putty is specifically designed to withstand exposure to the elements, including rain, sunlight, and temperature fluctuations. It is resistant to water, UV rays, and other environmental factors that can cause conventional wood putty to deteriorate.
Application: Applying outdoor wood putty is relatively straightforward. Here are the general steps:
- Clean the damaged area, removing any loose or decayed wood.
- Mix the wood putty according to the manufacturer's instructions, if necessary.
- Apply the putty to the damaged area, pressing it firmly to ensure good adhesion.
- Smooth the surface of the putty using a putty knife or a similar tool.
- Allow the putty to dry and cure completely, typically for several hours or as specified on the product label.
- Sand the repaired area to achieve a smooth and even finish.
- Finish with paint, stain, or a protective sealant to match the surrounding wood.
Color and Staining: Outdoor wood putty is available in various colors to match different wood species and finishes. Some wood putties are stainable, allowing you to apply a finish that matches the wood's natural color.
Durability: High-quality outdoor wood putty is designed to resist shrinking, cracking, or crumbling over time, ensuring long-lasting repairs.
Cleanup: Clean tools and surfaces with water or the recommended solvent immediately after using wood putty. Once it dries, it can be challenging to remove.
Safety: Always follow the safety recommendations provided by the manufacturer, including proper ventilation and skin protection when handling wood putty.
In summary, outdoor wood putty, or wood filler, is a valuable tool for repairing and restoring outdoor wooden surfaces. It is formulated to withstand outdoor conditions, making it an essential product for maintaining decks, fences, wooden furniture, and other outdoor wood structures. Proper application and finishing will help ensure a successful repair or restoration project.

User questions & answers
Question: | do i have to mix the entire container at once |
Answer: | This fill need to be use and let dry for some time before you can stain /paint over it, and when storing it for the next time turn the container up side down so it doesn't dry out over time. |
Question: | Why can't I get it out of the tube |
Answer: | It will harden with age, just sitting on your shelf. Or it might have come to you from old stock. Once the tube is opened, it will dry out and harden quickly. Probably need to get a new container. |
Question: | Can I drill into hardened mini wax wood filler and re-screw a hinge |
Answer: | Yes, you can. When filling larger holes: you can speed up the drying process by stuffing part of the gap with a small cutoff piece of wood. Make sure to overfill the area, that way it will sand to a straight, smooth finish |
Question: | What is difference or recommended use regarding wood filler and two part epoxy |
Answer: | You must make your questions clearer. MinWax Wood Filler when mixed with epoxy is an excellent product. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this be good for filling a gap between shower tiles and the plastic base in my shower? Is it waterproof |
Answer: | Bondo is waterproof. It is a two part product that you mix together and the working time is about 10 minutes. You need to mix small batches. It will bond to your shower and the shower tiles. After it dries it can be sanded and shaped. If the gap is small I would recommend grouting and caulking with a good silicone caulk. If the gap is large, just remember that you must use small batches and use a number of batches to work around the shower base. Mask off the tile and base. You will need to sand the bond with 40 to 80 grit sandpaper and finish with 100 grit sandpaper. If you get the Bondo on the tile or base it best to quickly remove it with acetone. If it dries on the base or tile you will need to sand it off. Bondo works great, but due to the drying time it is difficult to work with, and you must take your time. |
Question: | Is this the best choice to repair window frames where a frantic squirrel chewed along the bottom part of the frames & I need to build them back up |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Would it make sense to use this to seal seams in crown molding? It should not shrink and should be paintable |
Answer: | Sealing seam is possible but it would be a lot of work. I’ve installed a lot of crown molding and found that a good paintable caulk is fast and works great. Using Bondo you would have to sand each seam and Bondo dries quickly and is very hard. |
Question: | Need to repair rotted wood out of doors (fascia) & to fill nail holes on aluminum siding. What is better this or 3M Bondo Home Solutions Wood Filler |
Answer: | repair of the rotted wood is best first treated with one of two types of rot repair liquids. first is an liquid expoxy and the second is a water based solution that rehardens the wood. Both are available on Amazon at a good price.the water based system is much easier to apply and to clean up. the expoxy is stronger and better at treating really badly rotted wood. after treating the wood, then the bondo can be used to fill any defects and the nail holes in the siding. note there are two different bondo products, one for just wood and the second for all purpose. both work well for filling holes. it is important to understand that the wood rot needs to be "hardened" before filling the defects or the bondo will not stick to the wood. good luck! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this product ok to use on my porch floor where it gets lots of traffic |
Answer: | If the rotted-out section is properly prepared (say, by removing all damaged wood and applying a couple of coats of wood petrifier to soak the adjacent area), then yes, the epoxy paste will be equally as strong as wood and should withstand traffic. Just filling in the rot hole without treating the edges where it binds will eventually result in the "plug" separating. Be sure to paint or eurathane, etc. the finished, sanded repair. |
Question: | Is it possible to buy this product in white as the wood items I need to repair will be painted white afterwards |
Answer: | It cures to a very light tan. When painting give the product a very light first coat of paint and then a 2nd after that dries. |
Question: | the bottom of my sash is rotted, so how do I keep the epoxy in the hole |
Answer: | Tape over the bottom if you have access to the bottom, but if not try plugging the bottom of the hole with putty or glazing compound |
Question: | If I am using this to fill wood gaps in wood that is not rotted should I still use wood hardener first? How likely is this epoxy to come loose |
Answer: | The petrifier can be used to harden rotted wood. You can also remove a lot of the rotted wood if that is possible given the project parameters. If you are filling a large void it is good idea to use some screws to act as rebar for the putty. You install the screws below the surface of the repair and make sure to drive them into good material. Then spread the putty into the hold around the screws when dry the putty will have wrapped around the screws almost like you "screwed" the putty to the surface. Make sure the screws are below the finished surface will allow the putty to hide the screws. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it work with Particle Board |
Answer: | Should work fine on particle board. Forms a soft putty (think playdough) that can be formed to any shape. Dries rock hard, is sandable and paintable after drying. |
Question: | I love this stuff, but the weather has turned cold. Can I still use it outdoors even if temperatures might drop to freezing |
Answer: | The expected working temperature is 70-80 degrees. In below-freezing temperatures, it may take significantly longer to cure. But all J-B Weld epoxies will maintain its properties in temperatures down to -60° F. |
Question: | About how much surface area would the 64oz package cover for lightly rotted/splintering wood |
Answer: | I can't give you an exact number, but I have been using my product to repair damaged shakes on my craftman's style house which is over 1400 square feet with approx. 1/4 of the shakes needing some repair. I mix up the putty in small batches and use the plastic tool and 2 plastic putty knives to apply which give me the control and shaping time I need. Once painted, you can't tell which ones were repaired. Sorry I can't give you a more accurate amount in coverage. |
Question: | Is the date on the container manufactured date or expiration date |
Answer: | It is probably the manufacture date unless it says Exp. in front of the stamped date I am surmising, as I have already used the product and don’t have the containers nearby. I used 1/2 of each container on my beach house exterior utility room doors. Worked great. I saved the rest but I don’t have the containers nearby to even see if they have dried up |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this product help minimize the grain on oak cabinets before priming and painting |
Answer: | Yes. But why paint over oak cabinets and hide the grain? |
Question: | Is this putty easily sandable? Not harder than the wood itself (maple, in my situation |
Answer: | Yes it is easy to sand. I have used a lot of wood-fillers over the years, but Famowood is by far the best. |
Question: | I need to fill deep gouges in particleboard flooring under carpet. Is something better or cheaper when color and stainability aren't issues |
Answer: | Its a great product. I have used both the Famowood and Durhams Rock Hard water putty to fill in blemishes, cracks and large knot holes in plywood subflooring. Both worked very well with negligible shrinkage. A little sanding and a second application was required on large repair work. Both should work equally well on particle board. So far I have had no blemishes show through the finished VTC Vinyl flooring. As for pricing I would check local pricing and compare the cost with Amazon. Probably shipping charges will dictate your final choice.Regards,W. Les Clarke |
Question: | Am I the only one that is struggling to open the vapor lock seal lid? Certainly I am doing something wrong |
Answer: | Yes, had a hard time opening the lid myself. I tried just about everything I had on my workbench to try and pry open lid. I ended up using pliers to pry open the lid but it didn't look the same when I was done with it. Good product poor lid design |

User questions & answers
Question: | Did you find it hard to sand/shape? I'll be filling cracks and holes in deck wood, and want to "feather" it in flush w/wood |
Answer: | I have 20+ years in contract office furniture, specifically in Operations (8 years in Service) & Bondo is great for filling dents, divots, etc. I recommend using a non-flexible flat metal/plastic surface for your pallet. Work fast, it hardens quickly. Start with 120 grit & reduce to 220. We sprayed a light coat of primer to check our feathering. |
Question: | Can this product be molded so as to create a 1" vertical edge as it's being applied or does it need a temporary barrier to keep it in place |
Answer: | My experience working with the Bondo Wood Filler leads me to believe it requires a temporary barrier to form a 1" vertical edge. While the mixed compound is not "soupy," it is not so firm as to avoid slumping unless you were to build up the vertical edge in small (say 1/4") layers. After a few minutes the mixture does become firm enough to stand on it's own but at that point is unworkable. I hope this answer is clear and correctly addresses your question. |
Question: | What ratio do you use for wood filler to hardener? I find the directions confusing |
Answer: | I don't think you have to be too precise with the ratio. A little hardener goes a long way and this stuff sets up immediately. I used a hardener line about the length of a paper clip on a 4-inch dollop of the bondo filler and it worked fine. |
Question: | Will it take a water-based stain |
Answer: | Not an acceptable substrate for stain, however after priming may be painted over with laytex//water, acrylic/enamel, lacquer or oil based paints. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone used outdoors? I filled in a rotted door jam and it seemed to be working great until it rained. Now it is mushy and growing mold |
Answer: | I used it on an outdoor redwood table and over the course of a few weeks it fell out piece by piece. I would not advise this product. |
Question: | Would this fill in a hole about an inch by an inch, where a piece of wood has worn out on my porch? Thanks! Stay well |
Answer: | yes, it should. How deep is the space? |
Question: | Will this take a wood stain well |
Answer: | I am not certain. I used this product with exterior paint. And, the product is porous enough that it accepts the paint well. However, as stated, I have not attempted to put a wood stain on it. Maybe, it would be best to call the company/manufacturer and ask them. Sorry that I could not offer more information for you. |
Question: | Can you thin with water plastic wood by dap |
Answer: | Yes, it thinned with water just fine. It actually works better to do thin smooth coats with a spatula. It dries out quickly, so ability to keep adding small amounts of water to keep it moist is nice. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this product accept wood stain at all |
Answer: | Yes, but to control the amount of pigment, I have always sealed the filler 1st, and matched the background color of the wood grain, sealed again, then added the actual wood color on top of the 2nd coat of sealer, then sealed again, painted in grain lines and sealed again. Sealer = lacquer, polyurethane, etc. Usually using a spray finish.. |
Question: | Can kwikwood be used for rotted wood repair? the window sill has rotted area with high moisture content.the product label mentions dry rot |
Answer: | Yes, but dry rot has to be removed and wood needs to be dried out, for a good base for a stable application...also how large of an area is involved needs to be considered. If larger than 3"x3"×2" deep..I would considered a different filler, a bondo type for wood repair, available at most hardware stores, that's more spreadable...for larger holes. |
Question: | can this be used to replace the corner of a wooden drawer that is broken off |
Answer: | Absolutely. I used it to replace a few corners and patch nail holes |
Question: | Once you open the package do you have to use it all at once or can you reseal it and save it for another day |
Answer: | I used about 2/3's of a package. Resealed. Used about half of remaining a week later. Resealed. Still seems usable except portion I accidently put in contact. Is binary thick paste, like modeling clay. To activate, must kneed together with fingers quite a bit. Hardens in about 15 minutes. RH |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this product be used outside |
Answer: | It's rated for both interior and exterior use. I recently built a cover for my pool motor and used this to fill many holes and seams where the 2x4's came together (i.e. I did not want any places where water could pool or collect). I used pocket holes to join the 2x4's with paintable plugs and filled in the plugs as well. I applied several coats of aerosol primer, then color coat and lastly an oil-based aerosol spar polyurethane for added protection. I have a similar (smaller) project that has been exposed to the elements for over a year and it looks great (no rot or breakdown) |
Question: | Can I put polyurethane over it |
Answer: | Yes you can after staining it will help make it look more real sanding lite in between coats of polyurethane |
Question: | Is the tip a small point or more like a toothpast tube? I need to fill holes on small round details and need a small tip dispenser |
Answer: | It has a tapered tip you can cut to the desired size, similar to a tube of caulk. |
Question: | can it be drilled/ anchored once it dries |
Answer: | yes does very good |

User questions & answers
Question: | If you can reconstitute this product with water, then doesn't that mean the repair applied to your job cannot be cleaned with water |
Answer: | If you repair, stain/paint and seal the wood, as a *good* repair SHOULD be done, then there should be no problem. If the product in the jar is a bit dry and one adds water to reconstitute, it’s not the same as if one has filled gouges or cracks... let the product dry and cure... THEN cleaned with water. Fillers are a different creature once they cure; especially if painted/stained/sealed. There’s a big difference between the two circumstances. |
Question: | Can you use this to fill in permanent gaps between my old school farm house wood boards on floor |
Answer: | It's a putty for small projects like fixing a chip, or grain filling the surface of wood before a finish. It's not a building material. has no structural properties. |
Question: | Does this dry hard and is it sandable |
Answer: | Yes, and yes. It dries very hard and is easily sanded. |
Question: | what material are these made from |
Answer: | It's made from calcium carbonate and assorted binders. |

FAQs
Q: Do I need to match the filler to the color of the wood if I plan to stain the wood?
A: GoodFilla is designed to accept stain similarly to wood. However, the stain needs to be darker than the filler. If you are using a light stain, match the filler to the color of the wood.
Q: How do I make a custom color with the base/neutral?
A: A liquid or powdered universal tint or dye is ideal. You can also use paints, food dyes, or stains to tint the filler to your desired color. Results will vary depending on the pigment load. Always test by applying the final finish over the dried filler.
Q: Can you use the filler outside?
A: Yes. Mix with a water-based weather-proof glue. For extra protection, be sure the area is coated/sealed with a clear coat.
Q: Can I mix wood flour into the filler?
A: Yes. Test the results and color by applying finish to the dry, sanded filler.

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone have success filling chips on hard wood floors and success staining this stuff |
Answer: | I've done it successfully several times. I've had to mix a little wood glue with the filler each time and make more than one application since there is shrinkage as the mixture drys. Then I've roughed it up a bit with fine sandpaper and applied stain or varnish stain. Takes some care and practice. |
Question: | Why isn't the color of the filler marked on the package??? Very not friendly!!! Color is everything with filler |
Answer: | It's a WOOD filler. You paint or stain afterward. |
Question: | Could it be used to fill in shower grout lines and Rust-Oleum used to refinish without grout lines |
Answer: | We do not recommend using this product to fill in shower grout lines. We apologize for the inconvenience. |
Question: | Is this product dry powder or premixed |
Answer: | Hello, this was premixed and not just dry powder. As a "do it yourself senior of 87 (!)", I found it really excellent for what I needed for 2 medium sized jobs. It filled the holes and dried nicely. I bought it originally on a recommendation of a local timber yard and then bought another box from Amazon. If you do not use it all at once I found it useful to push it down off the sides of the box, and cover it with a bit of plastic very loosely on the top of the mixture, hardly touching. June. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Which sandpaper grit should I use to smooth it out |
Answer: | I used this to fill in holes caused by woodpeckers. I believe last summer I used a medium fine grit. Doesn't take much to smooth it out. |
Question: | Why is mine so watery |
Answer: | Did u "work" the tube (with lid on work up & down because sometimes it separates a little from sitting). If that doesn't work then return it for new 1. Should be kind of a thick toothpaste consistency. |
Question: | Can this be used under acrylic paints |
Answer: | I use latex paint over so why not acrylic too |
Question: | I am looking to fix the door hinges of a ikea pax wardrobe with a stripped the screw hole. doors are heavy and can i apply this and screw it after |
Answer: | Use glue and a wooden matchstick. Put wood glue in the stripped hole. Insert the matchstick and let dry. Cut the matchstick flush with the surface and drill a new hole. Larger holes use multiple matchsticks or slivers of wood |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this contain latex |
Answer: | This product never dries and will probably bleed through the paint. Better to use spackle which dries hard and may need minor sanding before paint is applied. |
Question: | How is this product different from the "stuff" with the same name in the can |
Answer: | The answer is No ! It only comes in small containers! |
Question: | How well does this take stain? thx |
Answer: | Yes, but remember that the putty is not the only bonding surface, I would make sure there is sufficient wood surface around the putty for bonding to other wood. It does dry quite hard but may not adhere to your glue. Try a test run first. |
Question: | I repaired a 5" hole in rotted deck porch step, it is still drying. Will my step hold up and do I have to seal it before painting it |
Answer: | I would use the lightest color putty and use a stain marker to get a closer match |
