User questions & answers
Question: | What are the concrete tips for automatic shutdown |
Answer: | Step 1.) Run around in circles until u get too dizzy to continue or 15 min has passed, then it will auto shut off. 2.) There is no step two. If you have further questions or need more concrete tips, just continue repeating step 1 until it sinks in. |
Question: | W/ backlite on I tilt the meter away from me the display is readable but once I tilt it towards myself the display becomes unreadable, is this normal |
Answer: | Yes, with the baclklight on, it's viewable from straight-on to tilted away from yourself, but with the top tilted towards you it loses all contrast. Side-to-side viewing angle is a good. This is a common trait among some LCD displays. |
Question: | I want to measure current flowing to my car starter when cranking engine. Does this clamp on meter measure DC current when using clamp |
Answer: | Yes, It can read DC starting current with the clamp when set to DC measurement. Reading moves fast but I take video with mobile phone camera and rewind to see the 268A when starting a Nissan Frontier 2.5 L engine. Reasonable current though I cannot check its accuracy yet. I buy meter to monitor DC charging current and confirm non-running car leaking currents under 50mA but need to wait 20 minutes after engine off to let car computer stabilize from initial shutoff which can cab be as high as 0.6A. With this meter, I also find about 10mV leaking voltage on plastic surface between terminals at new battery (due to acid filling spill at manufacturing?) from club store which I need to reduce the Voltage drop to less than 0.1 mV by scribing several grooves on plastics surface around terminal posts. Calibrate to zero by holding Z/F button few seconds before measurement can help read accuracy. I am happy with this meter for the price. Hope you too if do not have time to find a better cheaper on |
Question: | how accurate is th DC current measurment |
Answer: | I have not checked it against a reference, but I have done some measurements on my car with this. It seemed to reflect a reasonable value when the battery charger was on, showing charging current. and It showed a big current for the started that was believable. When you first set it, you can press a zero button to zero it out. Then I looked at a really bad solar panel that could only put out about 50 milliamps when shorted, and it was able to show that pretty well. So the bottom line, if you are going to use this for debugging stuff, it seems pretty good. If you are going to measure calorie input to control a chemical reactions in a pharmaceutical lab, I can't say. For me, it is just cool that it can do a DC current in the first place. Has already come in handy as I was able to determine my alternator was not charging my battery quite easily. |
Product features
To measure Direct Current
Specifications:
If current> 3A, the orange display lights up.
The measuring range of DC current is 60A/600A. Accuracy: ±(2.5%+5).
Note:
Before measuring the DC current, long-press and hold the Z/F key until the ZERO character appears to clear the data.
To measure Alternating Current
Specifications:
If current> 3A, the orange display lights up.
The measuring range of AC current is 60A/600A. Accuracy: ±(2.5%+5).
Note:
To measure the current you need to clamp the meter around one of the wires and not the whole power cord. The power cord contains two wires carrying current and ground wire. The current in two wires always flows in opposite directions, so the magnetic fields from two wires canceling each other, therefore the meter reads 0 A.
Grasp the individual current conductor to be measured and close the current clamp again. The measured conductor must be placed in the center of the clamp, otherwise, additional errors will occur.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the DC current measurment capaility? Are there no specs for this meter other than it can read up to 600v |
Answer: | It uses a Hall Effect sensor so the AC rating is the same as the DC rating. This website has the specs that confirms that: https://www.wantitall.co.za/tools/multimeter-tacklife-cm01a-clamp-meter-4000-counts-auto-ranging-digital-tester-with-ncv-ac-dc-voltage__b01n014use I tried it on my motorcycle, and it read the starting current of ~75A fine. The paper manual said the same. I can't find an electronic copy. The Amazon UK site has more info. It shows the range as 40A/400A https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01N014CTB HTH. |
Question: | Is this meter fast enough to indicate max current draw on the battery cable of a starting vehicle |
Answer: | I have used a similar meter to watch the combined starting and glow plug current on a diesel Sprinter. No problem. Since this uses a Hall Effect sensor, instead of routing the 400 amps *through* the meter, overrange current pulses should not be a problem. |
Question: | What is the resolution of the current reading |
Answer: | While this meter reads to 1 milliamp that doesn’t necessarily mean that it is accurate to 1 milliamp. It drifts quite a bit in the milliamp range. You are given the option to zero it out before taking a reading, but it does continue to drift. It is a marvel that a Hall effect meter that can read DC is offered at this price, but don’t expect +/- 1 milliamp accuracy. I am a physicist by training and at one time worked at Textronix, a premier provider of test and measurement equipment. |
Question: | Can DC current be measured by the clamp |
Answer: | It not only measures DC current accurately via the clamp but it also indicates the direction of the current. Due to the disagreeing answers on this question, I went ahead and bought it. It works really well for DC current and is going to be be an excellent tool trying to troubleshoot a vehicle battery drain. Just remember that not all clamps measure DC current. Most cheaper meters do not but this one works great for it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I am getting the entire display blinking when i put any load on the system. it blinks all zeros. i have it set for 100a, but am less than 100A |
Answer: | If your display is flashing or the reading seems out... (also if the reading stays 0 you probably have the wires from the shunt the wrong way round)The problem is the length of wires from where the shunt is (if it is not right next to the battery) causes a voltage drop across the cable that influences the reading and in most causes will cause the meter to flash as I suspect this is the over-read indication. (I am using three meters to measure two banks of solar panels and a wind generator)Solution: tie the battery side of the shunt wire to both 0v points on the meter . i.e. bridge the two inner pins of the connector and take the wire only to the shunt, this then takes the voltage drop over the cable to the battery out of the equation. |
Question: | does this meter count up the amp hrs used and then start subtracting them when charging begins. Giving you a running total |
Answer: | I bought two meters, so one measures charge, the other discharge. (Just wire the sensor wires in reverse for the discharge) |
Question: | Very happy, what's the proper way to read the "energy" section of the panel? Is it real time or an average of watts per hr |
Answer: | It is neither of those. The Energy section measures how much power you have used over time, i.e., the cumulative total of watt-hours. A watt-hour is equal to one watt of power used over the course of one hour. If you have a 5-watt LED bulb and you power it for 3 hours, your Power reading would consistently read 5 W for the whole time you're powering the bulb ("real time," like a speedometer), and the Energy reading would gradually change from 0 to 15 Wh over that 3-hour period (cumulative total, like an odometer). |
Question: | Can you use a toggle switch to reverse the small gauge wires so you can read either draw or charge while under load |
Answer: | FYI in the solution I offered above, it requires you to install the shunt for the charge circuit on the negative cable between your charging devices (all of them) and the negative post on the battery. The shunt for the load circuit should be on the negative cable between you negative battery post and the negative cable for you load panel. The load panel should have all your loads, both DC and inverter. The drawing that baylite provides does not show any dc loads. The common connection point should be the battery terminals. I hope that is clear. |
- PARAMETER --- measuring voltage DC 4.5V-100V; current 0-50A.
- APPLICATION --- monitoring storage battery, solar panel, model railroad, RV, motorcycle, house batteries, motor, etc.
- DISPLAY --- 0.39'' crisp and bright LED screen displays voltage & current value.
- CALIBRATION --- with voltage & current calibration potentiometer.
- NOTE --- the shunt should be connected when wiring, otherwise the meter will be burnt.
User questions & answers
Question: | Do you have this with a stronger 125 or 150amp shunt |
Answer: | he is asking if vender has this device in 125 or 150 amp capacity i don't know if this vender has this model but they are for sale as i have got them be four |
Question: | I just want to measure volts and amps coming in from my solar panels. Do you have any suggestions? Also do I need to connect the load to work |
Answer: | The voltage will read out with our without a load. The amps only give you the current coming from your solar panel so if there is no load, the amps will be zero |
Question: | So where do you connect the power source? I don’t find any connections |
Answer: | Is the problem that you don't understand the schematic? The positive power source lead should go to the load (motor, etc). The shunt bar goes inline (it is part of the load circuit) on the negative lead back to the power source. After that, just hook up the display to the shunt bar - and one lead back to the power source positive - and you should be good. When you say you don't find any connections, it brings up different questions. Do you have both pieces shown in the listing pictures? Are you looking for answers on a digital voltmeter/ammeter? The only connections on these pieces are screw terminals. There should be a wire connection under every exposed screw. One more item - if the problem is the schematic, the one shown on the amazon listing in the pictures is cleaner than the one on the back of the display. Take a minute to look at it. Hope this isn't too simplistic. Your question makes me go down a couple of different roads. Good luck. |
Question: | Power source? Does this run off the power of the circuit being tested or does it need a separate power source? Is it "self powered |
Answer: | I just tested it with a 9v batt. it operate off of the circuit being tested. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this read .2 amps on a tiny 22 gauge wire with 5v dc running through the clamp? can it read amps through a wrapped 2 wire (+/-) usb cable |
Answer: | This meter does NOT measure DC Current. If you had a different clamp meter that would read DC current, you would have to separate the 2 wires and place the clamp around only one to measure the current. When both +/- wires are in the clamp the fields would cancel and the reading would be zero. |
Question: | How many milli amps will the clamp meter read down to? i need one that will read 10mamps |
Answer: | In the 2/20 range it will resolve to 1 milli amp (.001). |
Question: | Is there an instructional video or other source for how to use this meter? The instructions that came with the meter are not helpful |
Answer: | Yes on youtube |
Question: | is a better detail manual available? the phamplet that came with the meter is not what I expected |
Answer: | I've worked with these kinds of meters my entire career. (Retired). I have never seen a decent instruction manual for one of any brand. But I totally agree that there is a need for more clarity. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the actual size of the product? lxwxh .. nothing listed here |
Answer: | Inside measurements for the cut out are 72mm wide, 39mm tall and 25mm deep. The outer face plate is 7mm wider and 3mm taller, not much difference. I made a matting skirt out of thin black plastic since it's very difficult to cut a perfectly sized rectangle in the wall. |
Question: | How to use menu options no user manual is included |
Answer: | Dear customer, We have pdf manual on product deatils page. It can be found on the "Technical Specification" from this page. Or please click on this link directly. https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/B1ubSSVdpyS.pdf Best regards, DROK |
Question: | specs say it is a 200A meter, yet some say its only goes up to 100A, can anyone confirm this can measure up to 200A |
Answer: | im sitting looking right at one 6months installed ... it regularly measures 155 amps of 12volt charge and up to 199amps discharge .... those are my system limits witb a 5000w inverter several golf cart batteries and two 100amp chargers |
Question: | How long i as the cable for sensor and what is max wire size that will fit in sensor |
Answer: | The sensor cable is about 8 inches long but i cut my cable and extended it to about 10 ft. I testes it up to 15ft and it worked fine. You could possibly go longer. Just use a good quality multi wire cable, or make your own. About 18AWG probably OK. I recall the hole as 20mm, roughly 3/4 inch diameter. No problem for RV battery cable. Remember you can run more than one wire through the hole, That way you can still use battery terminal as the tie point for the various wires that may already be connected there. The sensor will read the Sum of currents, that is for example, if you have charging from a solar system at say 5A, and a discharge load to lighting at say 3A, your meter will show 2A charging. Hope this helps |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this a true RMS meter |
Answer: | It works like any other volt ,ohm , amp , meter . |
Question: | The description says no batteries required. How can it measure resistance then |
Answer: | I liked the Klein cl380, I've used Klein tools before. I killed mine. Clamped it to a motor that I thought would be less that 40A . It wasn't. I looked the motor up and found run amps was 39A, So with the INRUSH, it killed it. This amp meter is not like an a AMPROBE with internal protection. Not $400 either. If your careful, start at highest range it should work for you. |
Question: | I see a hold button on the meter. Is that a "Hold the max reading" or "Freeze the readout when pushed |
Answer: | CR2032 |
Question: | Is there a hanging kit made for this |
Answer: | It has a power on/off button. |
- PARAMETER ---- voltage test range DC 6.5~100V; current test range 0~100A; power test range 0~10kw; battery level test range 0~9999kwh.
- DATA GUARANTEED ---- with power-off storage function, all parameter will be stored automatically when powered off; accumulated energy data can be reset.
- OVER-VOLTAGE ALARM & SETTABLE ALARM VOLTAGE ---- if active power is larger than threshold, backlight and power will flash as an indicator.
- LARGE-SCREEN LCD ---- display voltage, current, power, energy at the same time.
- SWITCHABLE BACKLIGHT ---- backlight can be turned on/off manually.
User questions & answers
Question: | When used to measure the voltage and amperes fed to the battery as opposed to battery output can/should you leave out the shut? 1 output side also |
Answer: | Dear customer, This meter is non-waterproof. Best regards, DROK |
Question: | If I use 4 shunts in parallel, would device show 1/4 of actual current flow ? I need to measure up to 400 A draw |
Answer: | Whereas I have not personally exceeded the maximum reading capability of this particular instrument, I have done so with many, many other ammeters, digital and analog with no consequence as long as the amount and time of overload is reasonable. The actual current being utilized by the meter's internal circuitry is in the micro amp range with little chance of heat damage. I'd assume that an overload indication such as a flashing display or , "err", "hhh" or "ovr" would be displayed. |
Question: | Is this device weather tight, i.e., for installation in a sailboat control panel |
Answer: | The add says voltage range is AC 80-300V. A standard conmen U.S. home outlet is only 110 to 120 volts. I was think it means it can't read below 80 volts are above 300 volts and only alternating current. AC = alternating current is standard conmen U.S. home power type. ("80-199V" Up to 300 or 199 volts) I am think that is someone's typo? Hope that helps. |
Question: | What would happen with an occasional 200a draw? Would it just not measure it correctly or would it be permanently broken |
Answer: | First, you are aware that it has a FLAT plug, which is not common for 220V. The picture show 236 so I assume that it will have a "2" digit which is also not common. Most voltmeters are have a ONE for the most significant digit, but it shows a "2" which means that it will read 200. Also note that the accuracy is stated at 1.5% +or- 2 digits. There have been complaints that the meter is off by 3 Volts...which is well within the specs and is typical for an AC voltmeter.. At 230, it could be off as much as 5 volts and still be in spec. Also this same voltmeter is available as a single voltmeter from Amazon, if you only need one, but you have to hunt for it. |
