14 best motion activated switchs
Motion-activated switches, also known as motion sensors or occupancy sensors, are electrical devices designed to automatically control the operation of lighting or other electrical devices in response to the detection of motion within their sensor range. These devices are commonly used in homes, offices, and various commercial spaces to save energy and enhance convenience.
Here are some key points about motion-activated switches:
Operation: These switches work by using infrared, ultrasonic, or microwave sensors to detect motion within their designated range. When motion is detected, the switch sends a signal to turn on the connected device.
Energy Efficiency: One of the primary benefits of motion-activated switches is their ability to reduce energy consumption. They ensure that lights are only activated when needed, preventing unnecessary energy wastage.
Convenience: Motion-activated switches provide convenience by automatically turning on lights when someone enters a room and turning them off when the room is vacant. This can be particularly useful in areas where hands-free operation is desired.
Applications: They are commonly used in various settings, including hallways, staircases, closets, bathrooms, and outdoor spaces. They are also utilized in commercial spaces like offices, warehouses, and retail stores.
Types of Sensors:
- Passive Infrared (PIR): These sensors detect body heat and movement. They are commonly used in indoor settings.
- Ultrasonic: These sensors emit ultrasonic waves and measure the reflection to detect motion. They are suitable for larger areas but may be affected by obstacles.
- Microwave: These sensors use microwave signals to detect motion. They can penetrate obstacles and are suitable for a wide range of applications.
Adjustable Settings: Many motion-activated switches come with adjustable settings for factors like sensitivity, timeout duration (how long the light stays on after motion is detected), and ambient light level (which determines whether the sensor activates in daylight or only in low light conditions).
Compatibility: Motion-activated switches are compatible with various types of lighting, including incandescent, LED, CFL, and fluorescent bulbs. However, it's important to check the specifications of the switch to ensure compatibility.
Installation: Installing a motion-activated switch typically involves replacing the existing wall switch with the motion sensor switch. It's advisable to follow the manufacturer's instructions and, if needed, seek professional assistance.
Overall, motion-activated switches are a practical addition to any space where hands-free and energy-efficient lighting control is desired. They contribute to both convenience and energy savings.

User questions & answers
Question: | How do I know if I need this 250W or the similar 600W switch? Are they interchangeable |
Answer: | Depends on use. Lights and Ceiling fans, 250w is fine. If you have a Electric ceiling heater That requires more watts, then the 600w I would use. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Will the motion sensor be set off by a small (toy size - 10 lbs) dog |
Answer: | I have mine installed in a small walk-in (6 ft x 5 ft) closet and my 10 lb cat triggers it all the time, kind of annoying when it happens at 1 am. I just close the door to preven this from happening. |
Question: | Will this work as... Enter room and I manually turn on the light and then the unit automatically turns off the light after a set time of inactivity? I only want it to turn off the light |
Answer: | Follow up question on the previous answer....So if the unit turns off the light, is the actual switch toggled back to the "off" position? So that the next time someone walks in the door, they have to again toggle the switch back to the "on" position? |
Question: | I don't get the,"No neutral required." A neutral is always required. What am I missing here |
Answer: | I was an electrical engineer for Lutron back in the 1980's. Many dimmers and electronic switches like this one do not require a neutral wire to work. This is not a mechanical switch but an electronic one. It uses a silicon switching device called a triac which turns the light on and off 120 times per second, just like every dimmer ever made. During the brief period 120 times/second when the triac is off, the device draws a small amount of power through the light bulbs it controls, and uses this small amount of power to charge a capacitor, which you can think of as a rechargeable battery. Thus there are many wallbox products, such as most dimmers, that do not require a neutral wire to operate. Nor does it put any power intentionally to ground, which would be against the electrical code and thus could not be sold. The reason other companies require a neutral wire is because they were not designed by companies that also make dimmers as their engineers probably do not realize the device can be designed to draw sufficient power using a triac instead they use a relay, which would produce an audible click when switched on, where as a triac device would make no sounds when turning on and off. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Does this come as pictured with the mounting stub or is it just the sensor? Thanks |
Answer: | It comes with the mounting stub as pictured. The mounting stub is the standard size for attaching to an electrical box (there are any number of options as to what size and style). I purchased this unit about a year ago and it has functioned flawlessly. |
Question: | Can I use two of these in paralled to work one light? I want to mount them on the corners of a garage and turn on one central light |
Answer: | My guess is you will burn them out. i tried this once with a water circulation pump (no light in the circuit) connected to a relay. A friend of mine had 3 of these in 3 different bathrooms in his house. the thought was as soon as someone walked into a bathroom, this device would activate a pump which would circulate hot water from the water tank to the fixtures (and hence the cold water in the line back to the tank for heating). We took precautions. first we made sure the power going to the 'hot' and neutral side of the sensors were from the same breaker (otherwise you could accidentally send 240 volts to the load if the sensors were on different sides of the line coming into your breaker panel). Second, we used a relay (mentioned earlier) as 'the load' because the draw (in amps) of the circulation pump was more than the sensor would allow as a pass though (you have to pay attention to the current these things will allow... watts, amps, miliamps - all need to know stuff! - we could have hooked it up directly, but it would have burned them out in short order, not to mention create a fire hazard). Finally, we ran all three of the load wires back to one junction box, tied them together with a wire nut (to complete the parallel connection you are talking about), and connected the load to the trigger side of the relay. we walked in each room and sure enough, the motion sensor engaged the relay, and the motor kicked on and the water circulated as designed. we thought we were home free. after about 2 months, we noticed one of the sensors was no longer activating the relay (and the pump did not run). we could eliminate the motor as it was completely separated from the electrical path. we discovered one of the motion sensors had burned out. replaced it, and all was well, and then a month later, a motion sensor from ANOTHER bathroom burned out. the relay hardly drew any power, so it couldn't be that. then we separated all of them and had three separate relays to engage the pump - never had another issue with burn-out. so what happened? we think if a person 'tripped' the motion sensor, it sent 110 volts to the load side of the other sensors (which were not activated by motion), and that 'back flow' of power messed up the electronics inside the sensors not in use. only explanation that made sense. so long story short, you could connect them in parallel, but i think they would burn out because of a 'back flow' between the devices. when we separated them with individual relays - no problems. e-circulation pump would have drawn more amps than the sensor allows to pass through we ranf the 'load' side of |
Question: | Can you disable the dusk to dawn setting |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | does it come on during the day when detecting motion or just after dark |
Answer: | If your application requires it to work during the day just put electrical tape over the photo sensor and it works 24/7. I used sensor to activate a fountain pump 24/7 |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with accompanying wall plate |
Answer: | I don't recall whether or not they do. However deco wall plates are low priced and available at all hardware stores. I am an electrician so I carry a few boxes of ten plates in my truck at all times. So if they didn't I grabbed a few to put on with the switches. |
Question: | Can it be onstallwd with a 2nd swirch for a vent in a varhroom |
Answer: | You could install one on the vent fan switch in the bathroom and have a separate one in a dual wall plate connected the the lights.. or wire both to the single switch. |
Question: | Could this switch be activated by a cat if mounted at standard switch height |
Answer: | Yes. It can be activated by a giant cat. |
Question: | My box has two sets of hot, neutral, and ground wires. will this switch work? if yes, what is the setup |
Answer: | Yes. If you test those two sets of wires with your multimeter, you'll likely see that one of the black wires is actually being turned on and off by the current light switch. If so, connect that black wire to this switch's red wire. Connect your always-hot black wire to this switch's black wire. Connect all three white wires together. Connect all three ground wires together. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this work to control 12 v light in boat cabin. I need the light to turn off when no activity is present |
Answer: | Would work but is on a timer so light would turn off after time is reached until movement triggers it back on. Could become a bit of a pain. Would be better if it came on when you came in and off when you left. |
Question: | Should this be able to handle both a short (1-2ft) 12v led strip and a 12v fan (draws 0.14 amps) (would wire led and fan in series |
Answer: | This sensor is particular for the led strips ,not sure what is your project ,please take a look carefully at the description see if fits . |
Question: | I bought this and installed inside gun safe but it doesn't seem to turn the led lights off. any ideas? thanks |
Answer: | There should be a setting under the back cover. One is for sensor distance, the other is for time. You may need to turn down the time adjustment. |
Question: | V-24V, referring to input voltage or output voltage |
Answer: | 5V-24DC is both the input and the output voltage. This is merely a SWITCH which is motion-activated. YOU would supply the DC voltage from your power source. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it work in the dark |
Answer: | There is a red led sensor that lights up inside the unit, but it is behind a white mylar window. I've not been able to see it from outside the unit even in the darkest night. Only when the cover is up for testing or adjusting. No one knows it is on my gate pillar where it is hidden. I would definitely recommend this unit. I've had one for 10+ years. |
Question: | Could I use this to power off a fan when triggered. and then have the fan turn back on after motion is not detected |
Answer: | I'm not familiar with that Model but I can tell you that for $29 you can purchase a HT (Baofeng UV-5R) that you can program to receive the signal from the Dakota Alert unit. The Dakota systems use a common VHF signal that you can pickup with any VHF HT its called MURS frequencies - hope this helps. |
Question: | Is there also a light sensor so if you plug in a small LED lamp it will only come on only when the room is fairly dark |
Answer: | No. The 3000 Series and MURS are different units and are not compatible. |
Question: | How is the sensor unit mounted |
Answer: | You can use any brand of VHF high radio if you can set it to the MURS channel(s) and optional tomes of your choice. Ch1 151.820/Ch2 151.880/Ch3 151.940/Ch4 154.570/Ch5 154.600. Channels 1-5 are narrowband on Dakota brand radios. I use BAOFENG UV5R radios, they are programmable and inexpensive. Just be sure to have them programmed correctly to keep it legal. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this water proof or resistant |
Answer: | This is not absolutely waterproof, and the product should be protected from rain as much as possible to use it for a longer time. By the way, please use a stable voltage input or use a current input of 1A-2A (<4A), otherwise when connected to a flashing LED or a device with a voltage change, the light sensor will make an error, which will cause the switch to fail to turn on and off normally. "Didn't work" in product reviews is exactly this problem |
Question: | Could this be used to wake up a hard drive from sleep mode if it's plugged into the computer's USB port |
Answer: | Hello, this is a sensor switch. if your driver reacts to a USB current change (wake up), then yes, it can be used to wake up a hard drive (The condition is to sense a person or an animal). thank you! |
Question: | Can i disable PIR and use the light sensor instea |
Answer: | Sorry, we haven't produced such a sample at present, and of course we don't recommend you to modify the circuit board. We are planning to produce optically controlled switches |
Question: | Can i connect it to my computer? do i need any hardware or drivers? can be controlled from linux |
Answer: | SURE, you can connect to your computer, and you NO need any hardware or drivers. This PIR sensore just need DC 5V-24V then can work. Because it doesn't transmit data, it's just an automatic switch. (It work by continuously detecting the infrared of people or animals ) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can anyone suggest a wall mount single pole p.i.r. switch with no manual "off" override? I have seen these in hospital restrooms with no visibl brand |
Answer: | LEVITON MAKES 1 |
Question: | Anyone else finding the light ON without any motion? I open the garage door and see the light on at random times day/night. Garage is empty |
Answer: | Mine also comes on when the HVAC starts or stops. I've also noticed that it comes on at night when I open my bedroom door. The door is completely out of sight from the switch. I can only imagine that the switch has an extremely sensitive pressure sensor in it also. I think I'll be replacing it since I think it comes on / off several times a day when we're not at home and the whole point was to try to save energy! |
Question: | Will this completely turn off LED lights or is the light still slightly on even if the switch it off |
Answer: | You must have ground connected or the LED light will stay slightly on. If you don't have a ground, it won't work correctly with LED bulb. |
Question: | I don't want anyone to be able to turn off the light manually, is that possible |
Answer: | It is not designed to do that but you can easily work around it. Remove the front face and on the bottom of the removed face are 4 black protrusions. Three are necessary clips but in the middle is a shorter rounded protrusion that does the pushing of the switch. With a nail cutter, or small wire cutter, flush cutter or the side of a small file hack off about 1 millimeter of that nub. Make sure the light in on (push the round black pad in the switch) on put this modified switch conve back on and test it to see if you removed enouch of the "pusher" that it will not activate when you push the button. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I received new version which turns on and off 5 times when I plug it in. Is this normal |
Answer: | Itβs possible itβs in test mode. Normally all motion activated devices will run a test phase upon initial use. There should be some toggle switches on the back to adjust the duration o time to remain on once activated by motion. |
Question: | Do you plug this into the wall or do you have to wire it inside the outlet |
Answer: | Just plug it into the outlet. No special wiring required. |
Question: | after detecting motion what is the maximum operation time? I would like to set it to one hour. I see from one of the answers that it can be set to |
Answer: | On the back it has a dial you can set for 1-2-5-10-or 20 minutes. These are the only options it gives you. Great product for the price. |
Question: | Does it turn on during day light and does it have an option to use it when dark or for 24 hours whenever motion is detected |
Answer: | Mine is in the kitchen and it will turn on, even if the main kitchen and dining room lights are already on. It doesn't seem to be as sensitive to moving bodies when the lights are already on. It's range is reduced. In the dark of night, I believe the sensitivity of sensor increases. Because someone walking into the living room 20 feet from the device, will trigger it on. In the day time, that doesn't happen. You have to be in the kitchen to trigger it. If you have pets walking around at night, they will most likely trigger it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is it water resistant |
Answer: | It is not water resistance. There is a hole on the back to adjust the delay for the motion sensor and gaps near where the wires leave the body of the sensor. |
Question: | Can you trigger a 12v automobile relay using this sensor |
Answer: | Hi, this sensore (with light sensor) can work with relays, some customers are used to connect relay. If you relay using DC 12V ( |
Question: | Can you use two sensors on one light |
Answer: | Hello, so sorry about the delay. I only bought one sensor so I have not tried. In theory you can probably use a "solid state relay" or use an "AND Gate" or a "OR GATE" both connected to the same circuit while keeping the supply voltage at 5.0 volts (perhaps a (5.0 Volt) voltage regulator since it should operate between 6 and 24 volts} to support the gates, plus other logic to get it up to the 6 to 24 volt level. You will have to draw this out and look at it. If you stay in touch I can figure that out down the road. I do plan to buy another one, but I haven't even wired this one up yet. Play thing for me right now while I do grown-up stuff, so I just haven't got to it yet at all. Stay in touch though. Take care... |
Question: | will light stay on for as long as there is motion |
Answer: | Yes. The sensor is continuously detecting, as long as it detects any movement of people or animals, the sensor will output voltage normally |

User questions & answers
Question: | Works with smartthings app on samsung note |
Answer: | Yes, all of the GE/Enbrighten Z-Wave lighting controls will work with SmartThings on any smart device that supports the SmartThings app. |
Question: | Can this device function as a normal, manual switch, but then use the motion feature to trigger other events/automations |
Answer: | Yes, however to clarify this and another answer already posted, you must have a hub that supports this functionality. The GE 26931 is utilizing the Z-Wave Multi-Channel Command class to be able to address both the motion and the switch function seperately. At this time, only the Lowes Iris and SmartThings (using a community created device handler) can achieve this. It is necessary for the hubs to allow this command class and functionality before it can be taken advantage of. If you are using the Lowes Iris system, you would need to manually use button presses to put the GE 26931 into Manual mode, and then you can set rules to perform actions when motion is detected. For SmartThings, it would be necessary to locate a community device handler to properly take advantage of setting the functions of the GE 26931. We continue to work with other hub manufacturers, however at this time, those are the only devices we are aware of that can utilize the features we have created to perform as you have requested. |
Question: | Is this switch smart enough to not turn on the lights when it is daylight? (i.e. does it have an ambient light sensor |
Answer: | Yes, it can judge if it is daytime and respond by not automatically turning on the light. You just have to set it up that way. There are several options available. You just need to hold one of three certain buttons down on the switch to program it the way you want it. You can NOT connect the sensor independently to the HUB though, only the actual switch. |
Question: | I want to use motion switches in a 3-way setup on a staircase. Can this switch be paired with another motion sensor |
Answer: | Unfortunately at this time we do not have an Add-On Switch with a built in motion sensor, and you cannot use 2 Smart Motion Switches together. |
