12 best lights with switches
Lights with switches refer to lighting fixtures or systems that can be controlled using various types of switches, including dimmer switches and wall switches. These components are commonly used in electrical and home improvement projects. Here's what you need to know about lights with switches:
Dimmer Switches: Dimmer switches are electrical switches that allow you to adjust the brightness or intensity of the connected lights. They are a convenient way to create different lighting atmospheres in a room, from bright and functional to soft and ambient. Dimmer switches are available in various styles and can be installed to control different types of lighting, including incandescent, LED, and fluorescent.
Wall Switches: Wall switches are the most common type of switches used to control lights and other electrical devices in homes and buildings. They are typically installed on the wall and come in various styles and designs to match the decor. Wall switches can be used for both single-pole and three-way configurations, the latter allowing control from multiple locations.
Switches and Dimmers Compatibility: It's essential to ensure that the switches or dimmer switches you choose are compatible with the type of lighting you have. Some LED and CFL lights require specific dimmers designed to work with them. Using incompatible switches can lead to flickering or other issues.
Electrical Considerations: Installing or replacing switches and dimmer switches may require basic electrical knowledge. It's important to turn off the power to the circuit before making any changes to avoid electrical shock. If you're not comfortable with electrical work, it's advisable to consult a qualified electrician.
Tools and Home Improvement: Switches and dimmer switches are common components used in home improvement projects. When working on electrical installations or upgrades, you may need tools like screwdrivers, wire strippers, and wire nuts to properly connect and secure the switches.
Energy Efficiency: Dimmer switches can contribute to energy savings when used to lower the light output, reducing energy consumption. This feature is especially beneficial with LED and CFL lighting, as they are more energy-efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs.
Smart Switches: In recent years, smart switches and dimmer switches have gained popularity. These devices can be controlled remotely through smartphones or integrated into smart home ecosystems, allowing for advanced scheduling and automation of lighting.
In summary, lights with switches, including dimmer switches and wall switches, are integral components in residential and commercial lighting control systems. They provide convenience, energy efficiency, and the ability to create different lighting atmospheres to suit various needs and preferences. When working with electrical components, it's important to follow safety guidelines and choose the right switches for your specific lighting setup.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this light switch compatible with LED light bulbs |
Answer: | Yes, these fit in the same spot as a single standard switch and you can put as many side by side in standard dual, triple, etc. gang boxes. |
Question: | What’s the difference between the 3-way and single pole option |
Answer: | In a 3-way installation, you will need the instruction manual from the GE Add-on Switch (model 12723 or 46199) for wiring the primary and add-on switch. It matters which side of the 3-way (Line side or load side) you wire the primary switch because it will change how you have to wire it. We recommend to contact our technical support line at 800.654.8483 for assistance with our manual, or contact a qualified licensed electrician if you continue to have trouble. |
Question: | Is it comfortable |
Answer: | This product can be used to dim xenon style lamps if they are the filament style xenon products. If not, then Lutron would recommend reaching out to the manufacture to check with them on what control they recommend to use with their lamp. |
Question: | how do i know which screw is for the black and red wire |
Answer: | The switch you are trying to replace is a four way. There is not any dimmer capable of replacing that switch. If you install the dimmer you have at either of the other 2 switches that control the same light it will work fine. The other 2 switches are 3 way switches. They will have 3 wires going to them. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this work with 220V |
Answer: | It fits tight as a blanket around a newborn. |
Question: | Do these come with covers |
Answer: | sounds like you have need for a 3 way switch. Most (not all but the vast majority) of single pole applications have 2 black wire, the next would be a white and a black (when power originates at the light it travels down a 2wire w/g) where one takes power to the switch and the other back up to the hit wire on the light. Most, the vast majority of applications where a red wire is attached to a switch is in a 3 way application (2 switch's operating light for different locations). In a 3 way this must be followed, one switch takes the power, the other to the light. No matter how it's wired this is the only way they will work as they should. The dark screw on a three way switch either gets the power or the wire to the light-s. the other 2 are indifferent and often the red and white TRAVELER wires, not the white neutral wire needed for the light to work. These instructions are for the USA, European wiring is much different. |
Question: | What Is Its Longevity |
Answer: | The ground is meant for safety, however the switches will operate without a ground connected. The issue is that these and most other automated switches require 3 wires to operate. Line, Load, and Neutral. When you pull the standard switch out of the wall, the 2 hot wires connected to the switch are actually the Line and Load. The neutral wires are referencing white wires that would have to be found in the back of the box that are not connected to the previous switch. These are required to keep the circuit alive in the switch for the wireless radio to operate. without it, this and almost all other automated switches and timer devices cannot operate. |
Question: | does the wire lock |
Answer: | No. All GE/Enbrighten branded products are rated for use with standard copper wire only. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can neutral and ground wires on the switch be connected together to home neutral or ground wire |
Answer: | As long as all 3 are standard on-off switches, yes you can. It’s just like replacing them with common light switches (size, fit, voltage, amperage, etc.). They even have three ways now. I have 16 2-way in my home and 4 three ways. I also have 2 mini’s. Eventually they will come out with some sockets. Then we can zone control energy eaters. |
Question: | Soy de Peru, Funciona con 220 v |
Answer: | The short answer is that you cannot set this switch up with your current wiring you are working with a single pole switch meaning the existing switch is nothing more than interrupt circuit you actually don't have a neutral and a hot you most likely have a common neutral. If you want to use the switch it require rewiring from the Gang Box for the light to the switch Gang Box |
Question: | Can I replace a 3 switch panel with 3 of these? Not referring to a 3-way switch |
Answer: | If they are left on they are only good for 8 or 9 hours they are very bright and work well for closets. I personally have one in every room for emergency power failure lights. I hope this helps you. |
Question: | I have only 1 black wire (load),neutral, and ground coming out of my wall, not two, as shown in the instructions. How do I set it up with this setup |
Answer: | Each light is 200 lumens at a distance of 3 ft. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do I know if I need this 250W or the similar 600W switch? Are they interchangeable |
Answer: | Depends on use. Lights and Ceiling fans, 250w is fine. If you have a Electric ceiling heater That requires more watts, then the 600w I would use. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Will the motion sensor be set off by a small (toy size - 10 lbs) dog |
Answer: | I have mine installed in a small walk-in (6 ft x 5 ft) closet and my 10 lb cat triggers it all the time, kind of annoying when it happens at 1 am. I just close the door to preven this from happening. |
Question: | Will this work as... Enter room and I manually turn on the light and then the unit automatically turns off the light after a set time of inactivity? I only want it to turn off the light |
Answer: | Follow up question on the previous answer....So if the unit turns off the light, is the actual switch toggled back to the "off" position? So that the next time someone walks in the door, they have to again toggle the switch back to the "on" position? |
Question: | I don't get the,"No neutral required." A neutral is always required. What am I missing here |
Answer: | I was an electrical engineer for Lutron back in the 1980's. Many dimmers and electronic switches like this one do not require a neutral wire to work. This is not a mechanical switch but an electronic one. It uses a silicon switching device called a triac which turns the light on and off 120 times per second, just like every dimmer ever made. During the brief period 120 times/second when the triac is off, the device draws a small amount of power through the light bulbs it controls, and uses this small amount of power to charge a capacitor, which you can think of as a rechargeable battery. Thus there are many wallbox products, such as most dimmers, that do not require a neutral wire to operate. Nor does it put any power intentionally to ground, which would be against the electrical code and thus could not be sold. The reason other companies require a neutral wire is because they were not designed by companies that also make dimmers as their engineers probably do not realize the device can be designed to draw sufficient power using a triac instead they use a relay, which would produce an audible click when switched on, where as a triac device would make no sounds when turning on and off. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Does this come as pictured with the mounting stub or is it just the sensor? Thanks |
Answer: | It comes with the mounting stub as pictured. The mounting stub is the standard size for attaching to an electrical box (there are any number of options as to what size and style). I purchased this unit about a year ago and it has functioned flawlessly. |
Question: | Can I use two of these in paralled to work one light? I want to mount them on the corners of a garage and turn on one central light |
Answer: | My guess is you will burn them out. i tried this once with a water circulation pump (no light in the circuit) connected to a relay. A friend of mine had 3 of these in 3 different bathrooms in his house. the thought was as soon as someone walked into a bathroom, this device would activate a pump which would circulate hot water from the water tank to the fixtures (and hence the cold water in the line back to the tank for heating). We took precautions. first we made sure the power going to the 'hot' and neutral side of the sensors were from the same breaker (otherwise you could accidentally send 240 volts to the load if the sensors were on different sides of the line coming into your breaker panel). Second, we used a relay (mentioned earlier) as 'the load' because the draw (in amps) of the circulation pump was more than the sensor would allow as a pass though (you have to pay attention to the current these things will allow... watts, amps, miliamps - all need to know stuff! - we could have hooked it up directly, but it would have burned them out in short order, not to mention create a fire hazard). Finally, we ran all three of the load wires back to one junction box, tied them together with a wire nut (to complete the parallel connection you are talking about), and connected the load to the trigger side of the relay. we walked in each room and sure enough, the motion sensor engaged the relay, and the motor kicked on and the water circulated as designed. we thought we were home free. after about 2 months, we noticed one of the sensors was no longer activating the relay (and the pump did not run). we could eliminate the motor as it was completely separated from the electrical path. we discovered one of the motion sensors had burned out. replaced it, and all was well, and then a month later, a motion sensor from ANOTHER bathroom burned out. the relay hardly drew any power, so it couldn't be that. then we separated all of them and had three separate relays to engage the pump - never had another issue with burn-out. so what happened? we think if a person 'tripped' the motion sensor, it sent 110 volts to the load side of the other sensors (which were not activated by motion), and that 'back flow' of power messed up the electronics inside the sensors not in use. only explanation that made sense. so long story short, you could connect them in parallel, but i think they would burn out because of a 'back flow' between the devices. when we separated them with individual relays - no problems. e-circulation pump would have drawn more amps than the sensor allows to pass through we ranf the 'load' side of |
Question: | Can you disable the dusk to dawn setting |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | does it come on during the day when detecting motion or just after dark |
Answer: | If your application requires it to work during the day just put electrical tape over the photo sensor and it works 24/7. I used sensor to activate a fountain pump 24/7 |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this require a neutral wire? I only have 2 switch wires |
Answer: | Yes, a Neutral is required. You must have 3 wires in total. Hot, Neutral, and Load. You CANNOT use a ground as your Neutral. If you are not sure which wire is wich then please consult an electrician. Please be aware that not all switches require a Neutral. Dumb switches only require a Hot and a Load. Years and Years ago they only wired switches with the Hot and Load. It was until around the 70s that the neutral was included at the switch point. Prior it was only located at the load. Load = the device that you want to control with the switch such as a light, motor, etc.. |
Question: | Can it be used to replace a switch in 3-way switch |
Answer: | It can be used to replace a 3-way switch! The other switch becomes unusable is my understanding though. I installed this switch in what was a 3-way configuration using the instructions from this review of this switch: http://www.amazon.com/gp/review/R1CGCNTF3U776D?ref_=glimp_1rv_cl |
Question: | I know it can self adjust the time based on coordinates, but can you program it to leave the lights, etc. on for only 2 hours after being turned on |
Answer: | Yes, You can program 7 separate on/off times. In my case, I have it scheduled to turn on at sunset and off at sunrise (all week). This is 1 program. I still have 6 programs remaining. So you could schedule random on off times for any day of the week you wish. For instance, on at 8:00pm and off at mid-night (Monday, Tuesday, and Friday). This would be 1-program. |
Question: | What happens if the power goes out? Does the timer remember the settings, or does it reset |
Answer: | I just spoke with an AUBE tech (owns Honeywell) about this astro timer on 8/07/19. He told me they use a super capacitor now that will hold the time AND program settings for a period of approximately 2 hours during a power outage. After two hours of the power being off, the time of day will need to be reset, but the program should still remain intact. |

Question: | Will the remote pair with a in-wall zwave switch (GE) without using the plug-in receiver (I just need a simple zwave remote |
Answer: | Yes, there is a tabletop cradle for this wireless light switch. It retails under the name "Jasco Magnetic Remote Stand". Part number: 39943 Picture: https://byjasco.com/sites/default/files/styles/product_image_555/public/feature_images/36240productdetails5.jpg Jasco, the manufacturer, mentions a "cradle" in their website, and they even display a picture of it. Unfortunately, there is no link to purchase it, and they do not tell you where you can buy it either. I have searched the web pretty thoroughly and I finally found it here: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Jasco-Magnetic-Remote-Stand-in-Glossy-White-39943/305537582 |
Question: | Re: the door sensor- can it be set to turn the outlet on when the door is closed, and off while the door is open |

User questions & answers
Question: | Currently i have single pole manual switch which says 15amp on it. can i replace with this motion sensor switch |
Answer: | In AC circuits (house wiring), white is neutral, black or red is hot, green or bare copper is ground. In many wall switches there is only a black wire on both sides of the switch. This sensor will not work with those, you will need a sensor that doesn't require a neutral (white) wire. In DC circuits, black is usually (not always) ground. There is no neutral in DC circuits. Cars and trucks have DC circuits. |
Question: | Can I use in parallel of two of such switches? So if either of them turns on, the light will be on? when off/no motion, load is neutral or floating |
Answer: | Yes, it will fit in a two gang wall plate. |
Question: | what is a neutral wire |
Answer: | Yes. You can share your device to your family member. The package includes user manual which will explain the steps. |
Question: | Does it fit a standard 2-gang wallplate |
Answer: | Yes it is a simple toggle manual switch |
