14 best led driver dimmers
LED driver dimmers are devices used to control the brightness or intensity of light produced by LED (light-emitting diode) fixtures. These dimmers play a crucial role in managing the light output of LED lighting systems, providing flexibility and allowing users to adjust the lighting to their desired levels.
LEDs operate on direct current (DC) power, but the standard electrical supply in homes and buildings is alternating current (AC).LED driver dimmers serve as a bridge between the AC power supply and the LEDs, converting AC power to the appropriate DC voltage and current needed to power the LEDs. Additionally, they modulate the power provided to the LEDs to achieve dimming effects.
Here are some key features and functions of LED driver dimmers:
Dimming Capability: LED driver dimmers enable users to adjust the brightness of LED lights smoothly, providing a range of lighting options based on their preferences and requirements.
Compatibility: LED driver dimmers are designed to be compatible with LED lighting systems, ensuring that they work effectively and efficiently without causing flickering or other issues.
Voltage Regulation: LED driver dimmers help regulate the voltage supplied to the LEDs, ensuring they receive a consistent and appropriate voltage for optimal performance.
Smooth Dimming Control: They offer precise and smooth control over the dimming process, allowing for gradual transitions between different light levels.
Compatibility with Different Types of Dimmers: LED driver dimmers are compatible with various types of dimmer switches, including traditional rotary or slide dimmers, as well as modern digital or smart dimmers.
Energy Efficiency: LED driver dimmers contribute to energy savings by allowing users to reduce the light output when full brightness is not necessary, thus lowering energy consumption and utility costs.
Longevity and Reliability: High-quality LED driver dimmers are built to last and provide reliable performance over an extended period, minimizing maintenance needs.
In summary, LED driver dimmers are essential components for controlling and customizing the brightness of LED lights, offering flexibility, energy efficiency, and smooth dimming capabilities to enhance lighting experiences in homes, offices, and other spaces.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a limitation on the total lineal footage of patch cable that can be used due to voltage drop |
Answer: | Assuming you're planning to use the full 150 watt capacity of the transformer you should use a minimum of #8 wire for that distance. Anything less would have unacceptable voltage loss and pose a possible fire hazard. Ideally you'd want to place the transformer as close as possible to your low voltage load...50ft is quite a long distance to travel with 12 volts. |
Question: | I installed a 150 watt driver on only 40 watt load and lutron diva c.l d. dimer sometimes the led strip pulsates.is this the dimer or the load i have |
Answer: | It depends on the led strip you are going to use. Some have only 150 LEDs in a 16.4 foot strand, some have 300, 600, or as many as 1200 LEDs in the same length. All of these will have completely different power draw especially with the different types and sizes of LEDs available. You must choose a strand that meets your needs and read their specifications to discover what size driver you need. For example, I just purchased 4 neutral white (4000k) light strips with 300 LEDs per strip to go around my room (50+feet). The specs from the seller tell me that these 12 volt light strips use 24 watts per strip, or a combined total of 96 watts for 4 strips. Make sure you purchase a driver that will not be maxed out on its wattage capacity, try to only utilize around 80% of it's capacity for longevity and heat safety. Purchasing a 100 watt driver would have been a bad choice as I would have utilized nearly all of it's capacity, which will wear it out and the lights prematurely with excessive heat. A 150 watt driver is a better choice to utilize a constant 96 watts of power without generating excessive heat. Also be sure not to connect multiple strips in a series end to end. It is best to wire them all in parallel, meaning each strip should connect directly to the driver with it's own wire and not connected through the strip next to it. For 4 strips I ran 4 wires to each strip directly from the driver. Do not connect strips end to end. Lastly, make sure if you plan to use a dimmer that it will be compatible with your dimmable driver and lights. The lights must be dimmable to start with. Then make sure the driver is dimmable. The magnetic led drivers all require a magnetic low voltage dimmers (MLV), which are not common. They will not work properly with (ELV) electronic low voltage dimmers, which are very common, but can fry the transformer and become a fire hazard. I hope this helps. |
Question: | Running 3 led strips in parallel. what's the max length of connecting wire and necessary gauge to connect a strip approx 50ft away from driver |
Answer: | You might do that but I would NOT recommend it. Voltage drop would reduce brightness in all three and potentially burn out the switch to boot. If I were facing a project like this in the future I would run line voltage to three regular outlets located at appropriate spacing for the lighting effect I wanted. I would control all three outlets' power through a dimmer. (one switch -> 3 outlets). THEN I would plug in the low voltage transformer that comes with each light kit into their respective outlets. No voltage drop. Bright lights. You can still dim them with one switch. Those low voltage controls are expensive and the transformer needed to drive the lights is really expensive. Stay with line voltage (house current) as far as possible. Line voltage dimmers aren't cheep but much less than all the low voltage controls. |
Question: | How many watts are in a foot of LED tape light how do i know how big of a driver i need |
Answer: | 12 gauge is more than capable of passing low voltage current. The challenge is in joining the wires, ideally by solder, to the Hitlights accessory connectors. You still buy a Hitlights connectors (a) cut off one end and attach by solder to the higher gauge wire and add a gasket/cover (b) clamp the other |

User questions & answers
Question: | how many 12 volt light can this run at 45 watts |
Answer: | the size is 190x65x29mm |
Question: | Is there a ul or etl listing |
Answer: | If this is a 2 wire Insteon dimmer, it may not work correctly with any led driver power supply. You need a 3 wire Insteon dimmer that uses a neutral wire. Having said that, the Insteon dimmer is a paddle switch, that when tapped will go to a predetermined brightness. If you hold it either up or down it should dim smoothly. If you just tap it, it can give the impression of High, Medium and off. I have used several of these transformers with Insteon dimmers and they work very well. |
Question: | what are the dimensions of the driver |
Answer: | With the manufacturer we use, GM led tape we are limited to 32 feet per run but you can do parallel runs as long as you don't exceed the driver wattage |
Question: | I have the pluspoe 20 xfmr with 6' of a 16' 24w led strip and an insteon dimmer. the leds don't dim, just hi, med, off. is the xfmr the reason |
Answer: | It’s usually your dimmer if you turn it down to a low light level. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is there a sizing table to tell me what size driver I need for a lenght of lights |
Answer: | Our AC Dimmable power supplies are compatible with virtually any dimmer on the market that is listed for LED use; including the Lutron Maestro Series. We recommend using a "CL" dimmer as the trim adjustment setting helps with controlling the dimming range. These dimmers will typically have the letters "CL" in the model number. |
Question: | Can you notice a noise (hummm) when you dim the led to low light |
Answer: | Thank you for your interest in our products. The 24 and 45 watt universal power supplies no longer come with an AC cord. If dimming with an AC wall dimmer switch you need hard wire the power supply in the circuit rather than plugging it in. This is due to National Electric Codes stating it is a fire hazard to do so. If you are not dimming you will want to use one of our standard power power supplies such as our 8,20,and 60 watts. |
Question: | Will this work with a Lutron Maestro Dimmer |
Answer: | First you should know what the watts of each 12v light, then you make sure total watts don't exceed 50watt of this model ( it upgraded to 12v 50watt). |
Question: | Does the armacost 45-watt driver include ac cord? the amazon listing says "...not included" but box shown in product photos says it is included |
Answer: | ETL I believe |

Question: | Will this work with a 4 pin led or 2 pin because i only see 2 wires coming out |
Answer: | The schematic above shows where the ground wire goes. |
Question: | Where can you buy the little adaptor shown in the picture so it can plug into the led strip |
Answer: | Not installed yet, but this is 4th LED install I have made. Been satisfied with Hitlights products. The 100 W driver connected to 2 high density LED lights, 888 W total. |
Question: | Where is the terminal for the ground wire |
Answer: | Safe? They do get a little warm to the touch, mine are in the open air of the roof trusses in my shop and get dusty, but no problems so far. These certainly outlast the originally supplied transformers with my LED system. 95% failure rate with the original power supplies--NO FAILURES WITH THESE DEVICES, but they are pricey. |
Question: | Worth buying |
Answer: | You need to know the wattage of your lights. The volts the driver puts out times the amps of the driver tells you how many watts it will power. For example if the driver is 12 v. and 2 amp. it could power 24 watts. Although you shouldn't take right to 100% capacity so about 20 watts. |

Question: | How many watts of dimming driver is suitable for this light bar |
Answer: | Its a magnetic transformer so the heat should not bother it. But never go over 80% of the transformer rating. if its in a attic i would stay around 70% just to play it safe |
Question: | Is this compatible with my Insteon Dimmer |
Answer: | I didn't shoot it with an IR gun...but it does get warm and it was only pulling 1.2a DC with my fluke multi meter. |
Question: | Has anyone installed this in the attic? If you did, would you advise not to or would you do it again |
Answer: | 2-pin only. RGB, RGBW, and CW-WW tuneables won't work as designed on a 2-pin setup. I would suggest a different product if you already own the 4-pin LEDs. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does the dimmer get wired in on the supply side of this unit or after it (the LED side |
Answer: | I can't imagine there is a minimum load. FYI: this has worked so well for several years, that I forgot it was even in the circuit! |
Question: | w device hums and power cycles about every 6 seconds of started on full brightness. If started low and increased no hum and stays on? Confused |
Answer: | Yes it does. However I should mention that its an expensive transformer to be used for switching loads. Its meant for dimming and thats why it’s priced accordingly. Seems like a waste of money to use it for that application |
Question: | Is there a minimum load on the 12V side (I was only going to have 12-15 watt load |
Answer: | Greetings, As this dimmable driver is 100 Watts and 12 volts, you will want to ensure that the light bar you use does not exceed a total of 80 Watts at 12 volts. This is because this dimmable driver works optimally between 50% to 80%. For more info, please contact us at [email protected] Thank you, HitLights Customer Service |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this unit be mounted to an exterior wall in Florida sun if derated for temperature and exposed to rain |
Answer: | Yes, I assume that your wall dimmer switch is TRIAC dimmer switch. |
Question: | Does this driver have knockouts in the back in addition to the ones i can see on the sides and bottom |
Answer: | Yes, work with 12v led tape lights. |
Question: | Does it work with wall dimmer switches |
Answer: | Supply side of xfmr is controlled by the dimmer switch. The dimmer switch chops the 120 volt sine wave. The led load(s) is connected to the 12 volt output of the xfmr. |
Question: | Will this work with led tape lights |
Answer: | It could be the dimmer type that you are using. That also often happens when non dimmable bulbs are tried to be dimmed |

Question: | What is the ul (backwards ru) number? it's very blurry on the photos. (important to show clearly so it it can be checked against ul database |
Answer: | Dear Arnaldo, Thank you inquiry our dimmable LED power supply IP67 for wet or dry location, This LED driver was designed to dimming the 12V DC LED lights, such as LED Strip lights / LED Rope light / LED Tape light, LED Cabinet light, LED rigid light bar etc, Can not work with 12AC/DC MR16 LED Spotlight, because the spotlight has built in a custant current LED driver, all dimmable LED driver can only work with the LED light that do not built in a LED driver, Best Regards | Sophia | Enersystec Electric Co.,ltd |
Question: | Why can't this dim more than 1/2 way? using dvelv-300p dimmer. tried both pillips and torkase led mr16 bulbs |
Answer: | It says it is rated for "dry, damp, wet." So it has a seal on the covers, including the "connections" cover. But you will knock one or two rings to insert/exit your wires. You would need to waterproof these connections, and make sure the holes you open points down for the rain. It is black in color (sun). You have no other solutions? Eaves? a cover over the transformer? inside? How about a full box you install inside but opened at the bottom only. Just do not place in an enclosure that is tight closed as it needs to dissipate heat. |
Question: | Will it work with 12vac and or 12vdc mr 16 dimmable lights |
Answer: | no knockouts in the back. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do you connect this your grow lights ? I see no instructions |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | How many lights can be connected to one dimmer switch if daisy chained.Im using 600 watt lights with meanwell drivers |
Answer: | I don't think so. This dimmer is for 110v/240v LED lights that have a separate 0-10v dimmer circuit. It's specifically made to drive a PWM circuit built into the light. |
Question: | Does anyone have experience with connecting this to a meanwell driver |
Answer: | Depends on the light strip wattage. Determine the type of led tape you want first. Look at the color (Kelvin, brightness) The manufacturer will give you watts per foot. Then you can determine if this combo driver/dimmer will work. |
Question: | I am trying to be able to dim an led that is powered by a 3.7 v lithium ion battery. if i put this in line between the battery and led will it dim |
Answer: | Depending on the configuration of you cabinets you may need some tape connectors/splices. Example: where a cabinet is above a sink and the cabinets on the sides are lower. I used the connectors to go from the lower cabinets up to the higher cabinet so I didn’t have tape lights going vertical. I also install my tape on painted underside of cabinets, so I have had no problem with tape coming loose. |
