14 best gfci receptacles

GFCI Receptacles, or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter receptacles, are electrical outlets commonly used in homes and other buildings to enhance safety. They are an essential part of modern electrical systems, especially in areas where water and electricity might come into contact, such as bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor areas.

Here are some key points about GFCI receptacles:

  1. Purpose: GFCI receptacles are designed to protect people from electrical shocks. They detect ground faults, which occur when electrical current leaks to the ground, and quickly cut off power to prevent accidents.

  2. Operation: A GFCI receptacle constantly monitors the flow of electrical current between the hot (live) and neutral wires. If it detects even a slight imbalance, indicating a ground fault, it trips and interrupts the power flow within milliseconds.

  3. Tripping: When a GFCI receptacle trips, it cuts off power to itself and any other standard outlets (non-GFCI) connected to it downstream. This immediate response helps prevent electrical shock incidents.

  4. Resetting: To reset a tripped GFCI receptacle, you typically press the reset button located on the receptacle itself. After resetting, it should restore power to the connected devices.

  5. Installation: GFCI receptacles can replace standard outlets easily. It's crucial to have them installed by a qualified electrician or follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully if you're doing it yourself.

  6. Testing: It's recommended to test GFCI receptacles regularly to ensure they are working correctly. Many models have a built-in test button that simulates a ground fault to verify their functionality.

  7. Code Requirements: National Electrical Code (NEC) regulations often mandate the use of GFCI receptacles in specific areas of residential and commercial buildings for safety compliance.

  8. AFCI vs. GFCI: Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) and GFCI are different safety devices. While GFCI protects against ground faults, AFCI is designed to detect and mitigate the risk of electrical fires caused by arcing faults.

  9. Weather-Resistant GFCI: In outdoor areas or locations exposed to moisture, weather-resistant GFCI receptacles are recommended to withstand environmental conditions.

  10. Tamper-Resistant GFCI: Some GFCI receptacles come with tamper-resistant features, which are designed to protect children from inserting foreign objects into the outlet slots.

In summary, GFCI receptacles play a crucial role in electrical safety by quickly shutting off power when ground faults are detected, preventing electrical shocks and potential hazards. They are widely used in residential and commercial buildings to comply with safety regulations and reduce the risk of electrical accidents.

  • Easy Installation: The GFCI receptacle can be easily installed in the electric box as little as 10 minutes by following our detailed instructions. Unbreakable polycarbonate decorator wall plates, screws and complete installation instructions included.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it normal that the red light blinks once every 20-30 seconds
Answer: Mine does the same thing. As I understand it, the gfic outlet has a certain "lifespan", and when it reaches the end of it's service life the light stays red and the outlet shuts down internally.
Question: When the load exceeds 20amps will this trip
Answer: No it won't. That is what the breaker that supplies power to the outlet is for. It trips when there is 4 or 5 mA of current through the ground connection.
Question: Can this outlet be safely used as a 'master gfci' upstream of three more outlets on the same circuit
Answer: I’m not an electrician but yes I believe so, as long as the gfci is first in line it will act as a breaker
Question: Can you use this on a 15amp or does existing non-GFI plug have to match to 20amp
Answer: You can, but someone could plug a 20 amp plug into it overloading the circuit. I would look for the correct 15 amp GFCI outlet.

  • Periodically conducts an automatic internal test to confirm that GFCI protected power is available

User questions & answers

Question: Is this a cafci outlet
Answer: Depends on the code for the area and where the device is installed on the circuit. For example: If the device is installed where the home run to the distribution panel hit the first receptacle box and all other receptacles are on the 'load' side of the device, then the AFCI/GFCI protects all downstream receptacles and acts as the circuit breaker. Hope this helps :) Thank you for your service!
Question: when using this device, a gfci afci dual function circut breaker must be used in conjunction? i a newb... semper fi
Answer: ONLY if all outlets have a grounding wire. They do not protect others if you have older 2-wire, ungrounded wiring. In that case, only the GFCI outlet is protected.
Question: does it protect outlets downstream on the circuit
Answer: Somebody wrote, "The outlet's current rating should be NO LESS than the breaker protecting it" but that is not correct. The 15 amp outlets are rated for 20 amp pass through. So they are fine on 20 amp circuits. The only difference between the 15 and 20 amp outlets are the configuration of the plug, where the 15 amp will not accept 20 amp plugs, only standard plugs (15 amp). Almost al household devices are 15 amp plugs. The 20 amp plugs have different shape (one straight metal prong and one rotated 90 degrees to the horizontal). Anyway, this ensures that 20 amp plugs are only connected to 20 amp lines. Normal 15 amp plugs will fit in either. So it is fine to put 15 amp receptacle on either a 15 amp or 20 amp circuit.
Question: Does it trip if the current is over 15 amp
Answer: They are labeled on the wiring connectors to be able to daisy chain them together. However, when I tried it, two of the three spectacularly failed (shooting sparks from the outlet and a tripped circuit breaker). I did not try the third -- requested a refund for the set.

User questions & answers

Question: How many wires can it take? The video says max 4 wires + ground. I have one line set and 2 load sets, so a total of 6 wires+ground. Will this work
Answer: I don't recall it having a rattle, but then again, I never shook mine. They have these are the bigger hardware stores too, just more expensive. You could go there and shake one of theirs and see if it has the same rattle.
Question: Is it normal for these things to have a rattle inside when shook? I may have gotten a bad one
Answer: Ground Fault Circuit Interruptors contain NOTHING to trip on too much current draw (amps). They can ONLY detect a grounding issue. This device should be fed by a circuit breaker. The amp rating of the circuit breaker will determine tripping by too much current draw.
Question: If on a 15 amp circuit, will this trip if two devices, one in each socket, draw over 15 amps
Answer: In general, yes, they can go bad with age/general use. GFCI outlets contain a number of passive electronic components (ex. resistors, capacitors, diodes) as well as often a chip/IC of some sort, as well as a copper trip coil. These can go bad, or in some cases -- as I discovered tonight with a 6-year-old Leviton 7599-W outlet -- the components (often ceramic capacitors; Google ceramic capacitor microphonics) can start to "ring" caused by voltage ripple or stress. This "ringing" results in an audible harmonic, noticeable by folks with sensitive hearing (are you able to hear an old CRT television powered on? You'd probably hear this too). I only had this happen with a single outlet, but I'll say it's annoying and makes you feel like a crazed idiot. "Where is this noise coming from? All my electronics are off! From the wall?! What?!?!" Just something to keep in mind if/when it happens.
Question: do gfci go bad with age
Answer: Combination AFCI with GFCI

User questions & answers

Question: Are these acceptable for aluminum wiring
Answer: There's a difference between more power-efficient MacBooks (Airs and MacBooks) and MacBook Pros when it comes to power requirements (obviously). I can charge the 2015 MB I'm using right now off of a decent phone charger. I took it to Amsterdam last year & Portugal they year before.. and didn't bother to bring its charger either time. Instead, I charged it off my travel USB (phone) charger, off a Lithium power bank, & off a USB power port on a train. This plug would work fine for an older MacBook or an Air. Though It may not recharge either fast,.. it'll charge them and keep them running,. MBPs are more finicky though. They officially have a minimum charger wattage requirement and Apple explicitly says they can't be charged from an under-powered charger like a Cellphone fast charger. I have seen them pull charge from under-rated Power supplies though but those chargers can't always keep up so often they just extend runtime. As others noted, it may not reliably charge higher-powered 15" & 16" MBPs.
Question: Is this device afci-protected
Answer: 80401-40 is the stainless steel wallplate for this configuration. David Keller Leviton Vice President, e-Business
Question: Difference to gfnt1-3w
Answer: You won’t get the correct device or the correct color from Amazon. I sent the item back over 6 times. They put a sticker of the correct outlet you order on a random box that doesn’t match. Wrong product number, wrong color every time. Suggest just ordering it from Lowes dot com.
Question: Can power pass through this to a wire to power outlets down line from this outlet
Answer: [email protected] is not offered as a Power Delivery Profile in this device, but it is part of the official PD 3.0 Spec as an optional PD profile for a 30W rated device.

User questions & answers

Question: Are these approved for aluminum wire
Answer: My best recollection on looking at the box, instructions and the receptical before install, the receptical was made in the US. Do not be fooled, if you are installing in a shallow box, the size is very close to a standard GFCI receptical.
Question: Were was this made
Answer: In normal use there is a solid green light. In the trip mode when testing, or if there is a fault, the green light goes out - there is no light If you see a blinking red light, it means the receptacle has failed. There is a picture in the Amazon product description that describes these light codes.
Question: Does the LED light flash or turn red when self-testing
Answer: Hot, common and ground. Three wires. It can be used as as a through feed to protect other outlets wired in series.
Question: For set up does this take 3 wires or 4 wires
Answer: Hi, This is not self-test gfci outlet. The LED indicator will be always ON for green color. When it is malfunctioning, it will turn OFF. Kowin Support [email protected]

User questions & answers

Question: How many lumens is the light
Answer: SHORT ANSWER: If you are not sure, and do not care, it's ALWAYS OK to put a 15A outlet on a 20A circuit. All it means is you can never plug in something having the special 20A prong. LONG ANSWER: The 3 prior answers are inaccurate. To answer the amps question about your CIRCUIT: identify the circuit at the breaker box, turn that circuit off, then open up the outlets for that circuit and CONFIRM whether you have 12GA (nickel-thickness, 20A) or 14GA (dime-thickness, 15A) wiring. For original construction outlets, you can shortcut to just checking a FEW of the outlets (inspector would ensure they're all same size wiring). Just check any outlets that appear to be added to the home AFTER a remodel, as homeowner DIY projects often use the wrong size romex. In very new construction, 20GA wiring is yellow romex but it was commonly white (same as 15A) prior to mid-1990's. Some will say "just check the breaker", but you do not know if the previous homeowner slapped 20A breakers on a 15A circuit (this is unfortunately, commonplace).
Question: If i'm unsure of how many amps my circuit is (15a vs 20a) then it's safer to just go with the 15a right
Answer: The night light would work. However, you should not install grounded outlets on an ungrounded circuit.
Question: Do night lights work if the unit is not grounded? One of my rental units doesn't have complete circuited ground thus I can't use occupancy switch
Answer: No. Wall plate is NOT included. We're happy with this one we ordered from Amazon - Leviton 122-80401-NW 1-Gang Decora/GFCI Device Wallplate, Standard Size, Thermoplastic Nylon, Device Mount, Small,White
Question: Is the wall plate included
Answer: Dear Customer, Thanks for your enquriy on BESTTEN 20 Amp GFCI Outlet. They are ETL rated. You can also reach us via [email protected] or 800-358-6160 BESTTEN Customer Care
