13 best punchdown tools

A punchdown tool is a specialized hand tool commonly used in the field of electrical work and telecommunications. It falls under the category of Cable Insertion Extraction Tools and is primarily associated with Electrical and Tools Home Improvement. Here's what you need to know about punchdown tools:

  1. Purpose: A punchdown tool is designed for terminating or connecting wires to terminal blocks, jacks, or patch panels. It is used to establish electrical connections by securing wires into connectors or binding posts.

  2. Telecommunications: Punchdown tools are frequently used in telecommunications applications, such as in the installation and maintenance of telephone and data network cabling. They are used to terminate the individual wires of network cables, ensuring a secure and reliable connection.

  3. Electrical Wiring: In electrical work, punchdown tools can be used to terminate wires into junction boxes, distribution panels, or other electrical components. They are especially useful when dealing with structured cabling systems.

  4. Types: There are several types of punchdown tools available, including impact and non-impact varieties. Impact punchdown tools have a mechanism that punches the wire into the terminal with a quick, forceful action, while non-impact tools require manual force to make the connection.

  5. Blades: Punchdown tools have replaceable blades or heads that are specifically designed for different types of connectors. These blades may vary in size and shape to accommodate various wiring standards, such as 66-block or 110-block connectors.

  6. Color Coding: Punchdown tools often have color-coded components to help users match the correct tool and blade with the corresponding wires and connectors. This ensures proper connections and reduces the risk of errors.

  7. Ease of Use: The design of punchdown tools is ergonomic and user-friendly. They typically feature a comfortable grip and a mechanism that makes it easy to insert and secure wires.

  8. Safety: When using punchdown tools, it's essential to take safety precautions, including wearing appropriate protective gear and ensuring that the power is turned off when working with electrical connections.

  9. Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as cleaning and blade replacement, is important to ensure the tool's continued functionality and to maintain the quality of connections.

  10. Availability: Punchdown tools can be found at hardware stores, electrical supply shops, and online retailers. It's important to choose the right tool for the specific application and wiring standard you are working with.

In summary, a punchdown tool is a valuable tool used in both electrical and telecommunications work to establish secure and reliable connections by terminating wires into connectors, terminal blocks, or other components. Choosing the appropriate punchdown tool and blade is essential for ensuring the quality and integrity of electrical and data connections.

Question: Will this work with leviton quikport cat6 and cat5e jacks
Answer: Yes it will work with most 110 style punch downs. You might want to consider a jack punch down block to hold the jack in place while terminating the wire
Question: Can someone explain why there is a pictogram of scissors on both sides of the tool near the blade? I don't get it
Answer: The scissors pictographs indicates the cutting blade. Look for the chisel side of the blade, that is the side that cuts the wire when punching in the wire to the 110 slot. There should only be one cutting side.. if both blades are chiseled, then return it..
Question: Where can I buy a replacement blade. I have used this for years but now the blade is dull
Answer: Just type 110 blade, there should be plenty

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work with keystone RJ11 connectors
Answer: I believe it will, though that's just through theory and not hands on experience as I stick to RJ45. The punchdown terminals are the same from what I've heard.
Question: Does it come with the 66 blade
Answer: It comes with a 110 blade and a BK blade. I don't know if the BK blade is the same as a 66 blade. But the pictures of the blades may tell you what you need. click on the picture of the blades and enlarge to see if that helps.
Question: Why does the blade always fall out even after you lock them? What is the point? Can't they make it so it won't fall out in yoru toolbox and get lost
Answer: The markings for the blade are wrong... They should be on the side... When you move the blade to the side then it locks in... For a cheap punch down it's okay
Question: Will this work with telephone wires at the distribution point
Answer: It works very nicely with 110 punchdown blocks. You just have to make sure the cutting edge is on the correct side of the block. The stripper does a very nice job as well - i haven't nicked a wire, so far, in about a hundred connections. I have no idea if it would work with an older 66 puchdown block. It won't wrap a wire around screws for you.

Question: what's the warranty on this
Answer: Klein lifetime. Ship it to them they send you a brand new one. They are only good for like 1000 cables (4 to 5000) punches.
Question: Is there a place for schears in the pouch
Answer: To me it looks as though it is made for what comes with this kit. You might be able to get one handle of your schears depending on the size of them.
Question: Can you use Fluke 110 blades in this tool
Answer: All 110 blades as well as 66 block and visipatch are universal. The blade it comes with is perfectly suited for 1000s of punches without blade replacment. Ive had at least three of this tool. The pick it comes with is an extremely versitile tool in itself and hard to find. The tool is rubber handlded for superior comfort and has a much slimmer neck then any tool on the market. Allowing for use in normally hard to reach places ( like the back of a 110 patch panel.)
Question: Can I just buy the pouch without the tools
Answer: Klein offers a variety of pouches in many different ships, pockets and sizes. This one in particular is almost exactly similar to their part # 5119.- HNS Tools

Question: Can someone tell me where this tool is made? -Thanks
Answer: Package says made in china.
Question: how many blades come with the package
Answer: Hello... it's been a while since I purchase it but I believe it does come with both the 66 and 110 blades. You should be good. Hope this info helps.
Question: How do you remove the blade on the end
Answer: On the front end you push in and twist. On the back end there’s a spring tension wheel you roll and hold open with your thumb to release pressure and tap loose couple times against your palm and it will come out.
Question: How do you remove the screwdriver blade
Answer: Is this a serious question? My screwdriver blade went to the bottom of my toolbox, the 66 non cutting punch is on the tool and the 110 is in the handle this is just how I store it. To remove from the punch end, it is a bayonet. You push in and turn then pull out. On the storage side, you have to really turn it all the way before it falls out. I can't see me using the screwdriver blade.
