12 best breaker finders

A breaker finder, also known as a circuit breaker finder or circuit tracer, is a handy tool used in electrical work and home improvement projects to locate and identify specific circuit breakers within an electrical panel or load center. Here's what you need to know about breaker finders:

  1. Purpose:

    • The primary purpose of a breaker finder is to help electricians, homeowners, and DIY enthusiasts identify the corresponding circuit breaker for a specific electrical circuit in a residential or commercial building. This is particularly useful when you need to turn off power to a specific area or device for maintenance or repair.
  2. How It Works:

    • A typical breaker finder consists of two parts: a transmitter and a receiver.
    • The transmitter is connected to the circuit or outlet you want to trace. It sends a signal, typically through the electrical wiring, to the receiver.
    • The receiver is used to scan the electrical panel or load center and detects the signal sent by the transmitter. When the receiver is near the correct circuit breaker, it emits an audible or visual signal, such as a beep or a flashing light.
  3. Features:

    • Sensitivity Adjustment: Many breaker finders allow you to adjust the sensitivity of the receiver to pinpoint the correct breaker more accurately.
    • GFCI Detection: Some models are equipped to identify ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets and breakers.
    • Live Circuit Detection: Advanced breaker finders can detect live circuits even when the breaker is off, ensuring safety during the tracing process.
  4. Benefits:

    • Time-Saving: Using a breaker finder can save a significant amount of time compared to manually flipping breakers on and off while testing outlets or circuits.
    • Safety: By accurately identifying the correct breaker, users can avoid accidental power disruptions to unrelated circuits.
    • Convenience: Breaker finders are essential tools for electricians, contractors, and anyone performing electrical work, as they make it easier to locate and work on specific circuits.
  5. Types:

    • Wired: These models use physical connections to transmit and receive signals through electrical wiring.
    • Wireless: Some newer models are wireless and use radio frequency (RF) or Bluetooth technology to communicate between the transmitter and receiver.
  6. Usage Tips:

    • Ensure the transmitter is properly connected to the circuit you want to trace.
    • Start with the receiver at a distance from the electrical panel, and gradually move it closer until you detect the signal.
    • Always follow safety procedures when working with electrical circuits, and confirm that power is off before performing any maintenance or repairs.

In summary, a breaker finder is a valuable tool for locating and identifying specific circuit breakers within an electrical panel or load center. It simplifies electrical work by allowing users to quickly and accurately pinpoint the breaker associated with a particular circuit, improving safety and efficiency in both residential and commercial settings.

User questions & answers

Question: Btw amazon photo shows 2 pack logo! even though you only get one set
Answer: NO! It is, and the specs say, it is for 120vac. House wiring is 120vac. If you are wondering about 220vac, then you are probably thinking (giving you the latitude here, that you know about 220vac house service (which can be either 2 or 3 phase). Only one of those phases is used within the normal house receptacles. Even if you just look at the regular 3 prong plug between the two larger devices, you will see that is is the expected 120vac plug. A 220vac plug looks quite a lot different. Anyone trying to diagnose the (2 or 3) multi-phase service would typically just diagnose one phase at a time. So this *could* be used to troubleshoot 220vac - AS LONG AS you are just diagnosing *one phase at a time*. If you don't have clue as to what I have just spoken about then leave it alone! You are, in the least, going to waste your money, or burn out something, and at worst, possibly burn your house down. Get an electrician to help you out.
Question: Does anyone else have issues with the sensitivity of this unit? I can't pinpoint a breaker, just a range of at least 5-6 push it to max
Answer: Yes! Do this at your own risk, obviously. For some of the circuits in my house, the signal from the transmitter was too weak for the detector to pick it up through the breaker switch itself, but scanning the wires always worked.
Question: Will this work on220 volt
Answer: If you just need to test for continuity then you can put an rj45 jack on each end and tone one end and test the other you can see if you have continuity
Question: If you take the breaker plate off can you get a better indication on a specific wire going into a breaker
Answer: you will still have to connect the generator to the cable somewhere. since they are low voltage it should work.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this product be able to identify more than which outlets are related to a particular circuit; such as light switches, oven vent fans, etc
Answer: That 69411 catalog number is for the: "Circuit Breaker Finder Accessory Kit". That was available when I purchased mine but I don't know about now with this virus problem. I do not believe that amazon will answer your question in this manor. Probably the only way to find out from Amazon is to just try ordering it and see what your response will be.
Question: I have 220vac outlets, if the remote plug-in unit only works with 110vac can I go one side to ground and simulate a 110 circuit to find each breaker
Answer: I am not sure but I would suspect code for high voltage lines should be properly marked for identification.
Question: Does the power have to be on for the tester to work
Answer: I don't know but im sure that the circuit wiring configuration along with the load center configuration will effect it's operating range. There are several variables that can effect the tester's operation.
Question: Does it work for higher voltage like 220 v
Answer: Does not have a sensitivity wheel, I’ve had no issues with it usually within one breaker its spot on. Just have to hit reset if u skip over the correct one to clear memory before re scanning

User questions & answers

Question: Can this trace a wire routing through the wall
Answer: It's configured for 120 though you'd have to read the specs to see a out 240.
Question: I have outlets wired in series: some NM. some metal-shielded. Can I detect signal in accessible wires "halfway" to the breaker to confirm route
Answer: That would be a bit more difficult. You would have to replace the bulb with one of those socket adapters that have the socket and outlets to plug in cords. I think that would work to find the right breaker since you could plug in that part of the detector.
Question: Will this product detect a bootleg ground
Answer: No, the circuit must have power to generate a signal that is traceable to the breaker panel.
Question: Can you use this to trace the outlet to its circuit breaker if the circuit breaker is damaged or off
Answer: There is nothing on the product to indicate that it is. The item is UL approved, sturdy, and works very well. You can find Sperry on Facebook and ask your question there.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this tester test the breaker itself, or will I need a continuity tester to test the breaker
Answer: Your question is unclear, but I think you want to use it backwards. The unit has a transmitter, which you connect at an outlet (via duplex plug, clipleads, or standard light-bulb-socket adapter). Then at the service panel, you run the receiver down the circuit breakers, and it tells you (most of the time) which CB feeds that outlet. It does not allow you to select a CB and then use the device somehow to find all outlets that CB feeds. (I would love that feature as well.)
Question: Extravie la pieza que se enchufa, hay manera de reemplazarlo
Answer: Yes there is a red light that comes on when the plug is plugged into a live outlet.
Question: Does the electrical circuit have to be powered up. I am trying to trace unused circuits
Answer: No the transmitter needs the power from the outlet to send the signal down the line. The transmitter is the device you plug into the outlet.
Question: Thank you for answering; I also need to know what the red button on the transmitter is for
Answer: The small transmitter plugs into a target outlet and injects current pulses into the line, which can be detected by the receiver probe when held close to the path that the power goes through, which includes the breaker. The receiver antenna is most sensitive when oriented with the face perpendicular to the path, so that's why it should be held with the face sideways, with the up arrows pointing up. Whenever the bottom is pressed, it resets the sensitivity to the highest level, and each time it detects a strong signal, it reduces the sensitivity so it will ignore any lower level signals it encounters from that point on. That's the reason for the multiple passes, to keep looking for the strongest level signal and progressively reducing its sensitivity until it will only sound off on the strongest one, which is generally the target. You can go back and forth, just try to hold the unit at the same point going down the line of breakers to get an equal reading on all the breakers. Basically you just want to reduce the unit's sensitivity by having it pass by any strong signals. If you accidentally push the button while handling it, you just need to run through them again. If you find the target, you could flip that breaker and run through another pass, too confirm it no longer sounds off, which it shouldn't, if it's no longer getting power. Sometimes you may get two breakers that consistently sound off due to the wiring paths being close to each other and coupling the signal over. Shutting off one would tell you which one it actually is. Get a small rubber band and wrap it at the inner lip of the button to avoid inadvertent presses. I did that on the Circuit Detective one from HF, and it now requires a firm press instead of just a light touch.

Answer: Unfortunately it can't. The CB 10 used to locate breakers from a energized outlet. The device needed to find a open, or deenergized circuit will have a tone generator built in, these are more commonly called wire tracers. They are a little more expensive but well worth the cost.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this to test my rv outlets. 50 amp
Answer: During use, the two lights will help identifying the correct circuit breaker to the corresponding outlet that the transmitter is plugged into. When scanning the breaker pane, the green button confirms a breaker is found, while the red button serves as a 'breaker not found' button. In short: Green Light = Breaker Found Red Light = Keep Scanning If further assistance is needed, feel free to connect with the seller through the Amazon messaging services at URL at bit. ly/HiVersativTECH, (all spaces removed), on social media or by the email on the insert included in the package. Question: Can I use this device trace the circuit breaker from an electronical switch, not an outet? Any suggestion is appreciated
Answer: In answer to the question, the CB10 can not be used to trace a wire behind walls. There are instruments out there that are designed specifically to trace the location of hidden wires but are extremely expensive.
Question: If a GFCI is not apparent in the kitchen, but is stated to be at the panel, will this verify presence of GFCI if plugged in at the kitchen outlet
Answer: You should be able to trace wiring that is not in a shielded metal conduit. I submit however, that your outlets are not wired in series, they are in parallel and perhaps daisy chained, but they will not be in series, nothing will work if they are. Remember the old Christmas tree lights that if one was bad or missing they all went out? That was series wiring.
Question: In an outlet where the ground has been "faked" with a nail in the stud, what will the tester show
Answer: The CT80 does not have a specific test for a bootleg ground. It does measure impedance in the neutral and ground legs so you could reasonably suspect a bootleg ground if the impedance of ground and neutral are similar. No guarantee of that so additional testing or circuit tracing may be needed.

User questions & answers

Question: What are internal dimensions
Answer: Yes, the GFCI outlet tester & Circuit Breaker Finder unit measures the current from one side of the power source to the other side, so power is necessary. Keep in mind in that older homes or commercial units may have unused circuits in the panel that some other circuit might be relying on that for ground, and they can be re-tasked for another circuit in the future rather than fishing new cable. It is recommended to consult a professional electrician for a proper consultation if you have any further questions for your project.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work on a non-energized circuit (breaker off
Answer: If I understand your question, sort of. Ael this does is ID the circuit breaker that controls an outlet. It doesn't work well with GFCI protected circuits and not at all if you try to trace through a sub panel. At best, in my house, It gave me a clue. The cicuit you are trying to trace MUST be live.
Question: The illustration shows the the transmitter screwed into a light socket. Does the unit come with that adapter
Answer: Only the handheld receiver requires a battery which requires no tools to change. The emitter is powered by the electrical current when it is plugged into the circuit. Device works well for me once I remembered that some of the two plug outlets have the upper plug controlled by a wall switch which must be on for the device to work.
Question: Does anyone think I need the Gardner Bender CS61200AS Adaptor Kit For CS61200 Circuit Breaker Finder to test switches
Answer: I'm not an electrician but I would bet most electricians would like to see you use a continuity tester on circuit breakers. This circuit breaker tester does an excellent job of identifying circuit breakers. If you follow the directions, then you will be able to identify close to 100% of unidentified circuit breakers. You must follow the directions to the letter.
Question: Can I use this to trace the actual line? I know for the most part what curcuits go to what but I think my house was wired by a drunk weasel
Answer: If you have misplaced any parts of the product and need replacement items, please contact the seller by email on our website or through the Amazon messaging services.
