11 best outdoor wood furnaces
Outdoor wood furnaces, also known as outdoor wood boilers, are heating systems designed to provide warmth and hot water to homes or other structures using wood as their primary fuel source. These furnaces are commonly used in rural areas where firewood is readily available. Here's what you need to know about outdoor wood furnaces:
Operation:
- Outdoor wood furnaces consist of a firebox, a water jacket, and a circulation system. Wood is burned in the firebox, and the heat generated is transferred to the water in the jacket.
- The heated water is then circulated through pipes to the building it serves, where it can be used for space heating, domestic hot water, and even heating of pools or other structures.
Fuel:
- Outdoor wood furnaces primarily use firewood, logs, or wood pellets as fuel. Some models can also burn other biomass materials like corn or wood chips.
- The choice of fuel can affect efficiency and maintenance requirements.
Efficiency:
- Outdoor wood furnaces are known for their high energy efficiency, as they can provide consistent and even heating over extended periods.
- Modern models often incorporate advanced combustion and heat exchange technologies to maximize efficiency and reduce emissions.
Installation and Placement:
- These furnaces are installed outdoors, typically in a separate shed or enclosure. This placement minimizes the risk of fire hazards and allows for safe wood storage.
- Adequate clearances and ventilation are crucial for proper installation and safe operation.
Heating Capacity:
- The heating capacity of an outdoor wood furnace can vary widely, so it's essential to choose a model that matches the heating needs of your home or structure.
Maintenance:
- Regular maintenance is necessary to keep the furnace running efficiently. This includes cleaning the firebox, inspecting pipes and heat exchangers, and removing ash and creosote buildup.
- Maintaining an adequate supply of seasoned firewood is also essential for optimal performance.
Environmental Considerations:
- Some areas have regulations regarding the use of outdoor wood furnaces due to concerns about air quality and emissions.
- Choosing a high-efficiency model and using dry, well-seasoned wood can help reduce emissions and environmental impact.
Cost Savings:
- Outdoor wood furnaces can provide cost savings compared to other heating methods, especially in areas with abundant wood resources.
- However, there are upfront costs associated with purchasing and installing the furnace, as well as ongoing expenses for wood and maintenance.
Backup Heat Source:
- Some homeowners use outdoor wood furnaces in conjunction with other heating systems, such as propane or electric, to provide backup heat during extreme cold or when the wood supply is low.
In summary, outdoor wood furnaces offer an efficient and cost-effective way to heat homes and other structures using wood as a renewable fuel source. Proper installation, maintenance, and compliance with local regulations are essential for safe and efficient operation.

User questions & answers
Question: | Are the heat exchanger components brazed or soldered together |
Answer: | I have a new HVAC system installed 1.5 years ago & it contains a blower using the Aprilaire 501 filter. The techs change it out annually, and there is a place on the new thermostat that alerts to check the #501 filter every 6 months. I keep 1 or 2 spare filters I got on Amazon as they're less expensive than the cost if I didn't provide a filter. As to what effect they have, I DO NOT have an air quality problem. Without the filter, dust builds up much faster, the air we breathe it dirty, and that's WHY we replaced the original unit. When changed, the filters are loaded with dust, webs, & whatever they pick out of the air the blower passes through them. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone. |
