You could hold the top rung and let it extend to the ground as long as there is a level area below the window and you could get the legs at least a couple feet away from the wall. It would certainly be more stable and easier to climb down than a traditional escape ladder. Not a perfect solution, but an emergency is an emergency.

Answer:	It can but we don't recommend it. If you really want to use it on the stairs, there should be another person holding the ladder.

Answer:	The actual dims of the 12x12 Flueblocker are 13"x13". So yes, it is a snug fit.
Question:	how tall is the A-frame section
Answer:	it has been a couple of years since I placed it in an unused flue. Went from a wood stove to gas. Best I can recall it is over one foot but less than two, in and around 18 inches would be my best guess. If too short for you sleeve a pipe around the handle and push it into place. If you wish, in the future to remove it, equip it with a nylon rope. I found if you put it in place and slightly pull it back it seals better.

Answer:	If you have to get it through a narrow damper you would simply leave the handle unscrewed from the pad as you slip the flat pad through the damper opening. Then thread the handle back onto the pad. Sometimes, you dont even have to do that, you can just J hook it one side at a time through the damper opening.

Answer:	It really does not stand on its own if you want a tight seal. We have a marble surround so could not use magnets. We uses a decorative fireplace screen in front of it to hold it in place. However when fire is dying or embers burning the suction of the air going up the chimney keeps it in place tightly.

Answer:	Unfortunately, no. The fit tolerance is limited by design to 28.5" to 48". There isn't opportunity to modify this.

Answer:	I didn't try to shorten, but it's to pieces of metal that fit together, so my guess is the minimum size is literally what the two pieces combined at it's smallest size.

If you are wanting to use this to plug the flue so you can keep the heat and fumes in the house while the vent free gas log is buring, that is not advisable at all. On a side note, vent free gas logs and their effect on indoor air have been studied closely by a University of Illinois - Champagne/Urbana study back in 2007. Because of the results of that study there are many fireplace professionals that do not install or service them. I really recommend you do some googling on that topic, before you set up to use a vent free gas log.

The ratio of the fireplace opening (sq. in.) to the flue opening (sq. in.) should be no more than 10:1. If the opening is larger, you won't get enough draft to pull the smoke up the chimney. Measure your fp opening and your flue. Do the math and figure out how much you need to close down the fp opening and then buy the 4", 6" or 8" smoke guard depending on which one best adjusts your fp opening size to optimal.
