12 best install attic ladders
Installing attic ladders, including telescoping ladders, falls within the realm of home improvement and requires careful attention to safety and precision. Here's a general guide on how to install attic ladders:
Tools and Materials Needed:
- Attic Ladder Kit: Purchase a kit that includes the ladder, frame, and necessary hardware.
- Power Drill: For making pilot holes and driving screws.
- Wrench: To tighten nuts and bolts.
- Measuring Tape: Measure the dimensions of the attic access opening.
- Saw: If adjustments are needed to fit the ladder properly.
- Level: Ensure the ladder is installed evenly.
- Safety Equipment: Gloves, safety glasses, and a stable ladder.
Installation Steps:
Measure the Opening:
- Measure the dimensions of the attic access opening to ensure that the ladder will fit.
Choose the Right Ladder:
- Make sure the ladder you've purchased is suitable for the size of the opening and the height of the attic.
Prepare the Opening:
- Clear away any obstructions around the opening and clean the surrounding area.
Install the Frame:
- Place the ladder frame into the opening and ensure it fits securely. Adjustments may be needed, and a saw can be used to trim the frame if necessary.
Secure the Frame:
- Use the provided screws and a power drill to secure the ladder frame in place. Make sure it is level and tightly secured.
Attach the Ladder:
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions to attach the ladder to the frame. This often involves securing it with bolts or screws.
Check for Smooth Operation:
- Test the ladder to ensure it opens and closes smoothly. Make any adjustments if necessary.
Install Handrails (if included):
- Some attic ladders come with handrails. If included, follow the instructions to install them securely.
Insulate (if needed):
- If your attic ladder did not come with insulation, consider adding it to prevent heat loss. This is especially important if your attic is used for storage.
Safety Measures:
- Ensure that the ladder has anti-slip steps and that it can support the weight it's rated for. Adhere to all safety guidelines provided by the manufacturer.
Finishing Touches:
- Make any final adjustments, and once satisfied with the installation, tidy up the area around the attic access.
Remember, safety is paramount when installing attic ladders. If you're unsure about any step, consult the manufacturer's instructions or seek professional assistance.

User questions & answers
Question: | When are you bringing back the telescopic ladder? This “compact” style doesn’t work if you do t have a lot of empty space inside your attic |
Answer: | I've purchased a 32 oz and a gallon. I think I reviewed the 32oz. |
Question: | Is it attached to the door |
Answer: | The Alba website shows no parabens in the ingredients for this product. I believe the ingredients list on this Amazon listing is a misprint and should be corrected. If you’re in doubt, check the website or your local store (I think Target carries it) to verify the ingredients. Worst case, if you order this and it shows parabens on the product, just send it back and request a refund because it’s not the product you ordered if you ordered something without parabens. |
Question: | what ladder is suitable for vertical position |
Answer: | Smells horrid, like acrid oil paint. I can't use it and I usually like natural lotions, but the scent of this is unbearably strong and pungent. |
Question: | I have a 30x30 rough opening and a 8' ceiling. Will this ladder work? Also, what is the quality of the ladder |
Answer: | It smells but I wouldn’t say it’s a scent. Just lotion smell. It’s not strong but if you are sensitive it might bother you |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you buy the ladder by itself |
Answer: | I believe so. I measured my width. There are adjustment holes to make the width adjustable. If your width is not already drilled for, it would be easy to drill new holes to accommodate your width of opening. You will love this product. It is a little pricey, but it is sturdy. It has kept me from stepping into the opening several times. If you compare the cost of falling (hospital, etc.) this is a very cheap cost in my opinion. |
Question: | Will this ladder fit into a 22 inch opening |
Answer: | Same Product |
Question: | Does thsi product come with the ladder/stairs |
Answer: | Yes, the VersaRail is adjustable and should fit outside the tent. The tent is 25 1/2" x 54". The rail can be adjusted out to 30" x 60" |
Question: | My ceiling is 7 feet high. Can I make it work |
Answer: | Not OSHA approved Off the top of my head... The railing must be 42 inches at the top rail. Must have a Midrail and toe rail. Also needs to support a minimum of 200 lbs or more. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the length of B in the last picture (showing the folding mechanism |
Answer: | it is not fire rated. |
Question: | What is the stair width? I have big feet and need a wide stair |
Answer: | Should fit...on center means center to center. So 24" on center is 22½" in between. |
Question: | Can this ladder be used for both residential and commercial |
Answer: | Yes, but it's a tight fit. The wooden frame is 21 3/4" wide, so while it will fit in a 22" joist bay, there's little tolerance for adjustment. Your joists had better be parallel in both directions. Mine were a little out of whack in both directions, so I had to make tapered shims to compensate. One hint: check for squareness of the assembly by closing the stairs and seeing if the door cover (presumed to be a rectangle) lines up. |
Question: | This version is currently about $20 cheaper than the 7' - 8'9"" model. Is there any reason this one can't be cut down shorter than the listed |
Answer: | Rather than risking your safety and welfare on an old unit, buy a new one. The ladder wood dries out with heat and old age, the hardware gets bent and loose. Probably one spring broke so they removed the other. How does it stay closed with no springs? My hardware and spring arms were getting very loose and the steps would crunch when you stepped on them from being dry. Weigh the risk $86 and free shipping for a new unit. At least that's what it was when I bought mine. Every time I use it now I ask myself why didn't I do this 15 years ago |
Question: | Is this ladder fire rated for garage installation? This is requirement in California |
Answer: | I think it might work but your first step would be close to the floor. Might be better to find a model mad for 8'-10'. I used this one in my garage which has 10'-6" ceiling, it is an awesome ladder. |
Question: | My studs are @22.5" on center, is this too small for the ladder? Or does the frame meant as 22.5" on center, rather than 24" (I think) on center |
Answer: | It should work. My ceiling is 10 feet and I had to cut over 2 feet off from it might be just a little steep |
Question: | Will the L22 4P fit in a 22" opening |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | I bought a house with this style of attic ladder, but the springs are missing. Does anyone know the length and diameter of the springs |
Answer: | I have this installed in my garage with an 11 ft ceiling.. It comes with a expandable pole to reach the loop to pull the door down. Once that is done, being 5ft 9 inches tall, I use a 3 step stool to stand on to fold out the ladder to the floor. I also use the step stool to stand on when folding it back up. I have had it installed for almost a year now and have always opened and closed it by myself. |

You will need at least 79-inches to ensure that the attic ladder has enough space during opening.
Step 4 Measure the landing space for the attic ladder

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the ladder rungs detach to customize for height |
Answer: | Remember this a heavy ladder that is quite heavy that has stackable steps that would not be safe to attached as pull down ladder. So I would not recommend this type of ladder for any attachment. |
Question: | Do you sell the attic door as well? It says it’s sold separately. Can you post a link |
Answer: | Thanks for your suggestion, we will forward your opinion to the relevant department and suggest them to develop. |
Question: | does this need a separate frame in order to install this |
Answer: | I don't know where the ladder is made. I looked all over my ladder and it does not say. I looked on the Wolfwise web site and it doesn't say either. I can tall you this. I'm very impressed with this ladder. It weighs about 25 lbs and It's very strong, I didn't expect it to be as rigid as it is. The bottom tubes are about 2 3/4" diameter. I weigh over 200 lbs and with the ladder fully extended there is very little give or flexing as I go up and down, far less than with an aluminum extension ladder. When letting the ladder down there is a soft drop feature as each section collapses so there is little chance you would get your finger smashed. You won't go wrong with this ladder. |
Question: | Can the ladder be shortened? I'm looking for a solution for a 24" length opening |
Answer: | Hello, it is recommended that the ladder is at an angle of 60-75 degrees with the ground when using. |
