10 best roofing paper
Roofing paper, also known as roofing felt or tar paper, is a crucial component in the construction and maintenance of roofs. It is used for various purposes, including weatherproofing, insulation, and moisture protection. Here's what you need to know about roofing paper:
Purpose: Roofing paper serves as a protective barrier between the roofing materials (such as shingles or metal) and the roof deck (usually plywood or OSB). Its primary purpose is to provide an additional layer of weather resistance and waterproofing to prevent water infiltration and protect the roof structure.
Materials: Roofing paper is typically made from materials like asphalt-saturated felt or synthetic materials like fiberglass or polyester. The asphalt-saturated felt is commonly used due to its durability and water-resistant properties.
Types:
- Asphalt-Saturated Felt: This traditional roofing paper is made by saturating a felt material with asphalt. It is available in various weights or thicknesses, with heavier weights offering increased durability and protection.
- Synthetic Roofing Underlayment: Some modern roofing underlayment materials are made from synthetic materials like fiberglass or polyester. They often provide better tear resistance and may have self-adhesive backing for ease of installation.
Installation: Roofing paper is typically installed on the roof deck before the final roofing material (shingles, metal, etc.) is applied. It is rolled out horizontally in overlapping layers, starting from the bottom of the roof and working upwards. Overlapping the sheets helps prevent water from seeping through.
Functions:
- Waterproofing: Roofing paper acts as a waterproof barrier, preventing water from penetrating the roof deck and causing damage.
- Protection: It provides protection against wind-driven rain, ice, and snow, helping to extend the lifespan of the roof.
- Insulation: While roofing paper is not a primary insulator, it can provide a minimal level of thermal insulation.
Weatherproofing: Roofing paper is a critical component of weatherproofing a roof. It acts as a secondary line of defense against moisture infiltration, especially during heavy rain or snowfall.
Repair and Replacement: Over time, roofing paper can deteriorate due to exposure to the elements. When replacing a roof, it's common to inspect and replace the roofing paper to ensure the roof's integrity.
Compatibility: Roofing paper should be compatible with the roofing materials being used. For example, specific types of roofing paper are designed for use with asphalt shingles, while others are suitable for metal roofing.
Roofing paper plays a vital role in protecting roofs and the structures they cover from water damage and weather-related issues. It is an essential component of roofing systems and contributes to the overall longevity and durability of a roof.

User questions & answers
Question: | What else is needed for installing tyvek protec underlayment |
Answer: | Yes, it will work to protect your wood from water but I believe I remember reading it is not to be used as a vapor wrap. The recommendation is to double up on low pitch roof so keep that in mind. Also, if you get moisture trapped behind it, it might be bad so the wood needs to be dry. You affix with plastic head nails. No glue. |
Question: | Cuanto mide el rollo |
Answer: | Yes, our product will work just fine in this application. |
Question: | can this be used with concrete tile |
Answer: | Yes this would seal exterior wood. I have used it on wood slab benches outside and it’s incredibly slick to walk on when wet. Epoxy is more for boat trim not for sealing docks. You’d be better off with an oil. Plywood bubbles in direct sun when it has moisture in it. Trex it if able. |
Question: | Is this product waterproof |
Answer: | Absolutely. Thats how its supposed to be |

User questions & answers
Question: | There are devices that will pull the nails well enough for about 4 bucks, if you have a gun do you get any value from the nail setter |
Answer: | Yes, it can definitely pull pneumatic staples, maybe even better than nails some times |
Question: | What is the difference between 1-(pack), (improved.) and single pack? they all look like the same product with widely different prices |
Answer: | this tack puller works great doing the job its intended to do, however I will say I was pulling out panel nails and it was not thin enough to get under without damaging the panel wood. Lucky for me I didn't care. not sure there is a tool thinner but good luck. |
Question: | Does this work well with the ridge cap shingles |
Answer: | Somewhere deep inside the bowels of an Amazon warehouse, a screw driver and a week puller met, fell in love and whalah, ya got yourself one of these things. But - in this case you got twins...and they're so cute, not terribly useful, but they don't eat much and generally stay in their drawer without complaining too much. Hope that helps, next question........... |
Question: | Will this not work on architectural shingles |
Answer: | Probably |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this product stick to concrete and is the color a dull aluminum |
Answer: | I applied it to cinder block, and after nine months it seems to be doing the job. I would describe the finish as approximating the dull side of a sheet of aluminum foil. I had two rolls one was a smooth finish and the other was a wrinkle finish. I took what they gave me... |
Question: | Is this tape sticky on both sides? Is it suitable for use between two asphalt shingles to prevent wind lift |
Answer: | It's just sticky on one side..the other side is an aluminum type paper...I don't think it would be good for shingles but I'm not sure how you plan to use it....maybe look into that roof asphalt that comes in a can.. |
Question: | How to you cut this to size? Thanks |
Answer: | scissors, knife !!! cuts easily |
Question: | How many rolls are in this? It says “6” by t is that the quantity or the inch size |
Answer: | Just one roll that is 6 inch wide 25 ft long |
