It stands for; "Minimum Efficiency Rating Value" There are 1-16 ratings with "1" being the worst and " 16" of course being the best! I tend to get the MERV11 in a 4" thick pleated filter because it traps everything I'm most worried about like dust, mites, pet dander, bacterias, allergic pollen and when my daughter cooks or burns something in the oven, kitchen smoke! Keeping all that "sheet" out of the distribution process of hot/cold air being deposited throughout the many registers in my house not only protects my family, but it helps to prolong the system and house by keeping it all clean and dust free!! Don't skimp when it comes to selecting that MERV rated filter or you may end up replacing more than just the filter. Read the specs on the system you own to be sure you're using the correct size filter and change it every six months or less depending on your environment.

Answer:	I can only say that without modification, the spring mechanism will not allow vertical retraction. Mines served me well although a bit flimsy, is equally as light, compact and functional. I'm 185, I couldn't recommend it for anyone over 220.

Answer:	Yes, it should work provided that the other clearance requirements are met (it does require some space above and behind the attic opening where the ladder sits when it is stowed).The ladder is on the light weight side. I weigh @ 220 and I feel like I am about as heavy as could use it.

Answer:	Should fit...on center means center to center. So 24" on center is 22½" in between.

Answer:	Yes, but it's a tight fit. The wooden frame is 21 3/4" wide, so while it will fit in a 22" joist bay, there's little tolerance for adjustment. Your joists had better be parallel in both directions. Mine were a little out of whack in both directions, so I had to make tapered shims to compensate. One hint: check for squareness of the assembly by closing the stairs and seeing if the door cover (presumed to be a rectangle) lines up.

Answer:	Rather than risking your safety and welfare on an old unit, buy a new one. The ladder wood dries out with heat and old age, the hardware gets bent and loose. Probably one spring broke so they removed the other. How does it stay closed with no springs? My hardware and spring arms were getting very loose and the steps would crunch when you stepped on them from being dry. Weigh the risk $86 and free shipping for a new unit. At least that's what it was when I bought mine. Every time I use it now I ask myself why didn't I do this 15 years ago

Answer:	The QR code identifies the kind of filter. I bought two sets of these from different retailers, one was MERV8, the other was MERV8 and MERV11 mixed together. Both included the MERV13 label inside the shrink wrap. Filterbuy either has consistently lousy quality control or is just scamming us. You can identify MERV13 by their folds, they are slightly fluffy-looking (like a sweater). MERV12, 11, 8 and lower are smooth and look more like folded paper with sharp edges.

Question:	I know it's made for attic stairs, but can I use this for a simple attic access panel that's about 1/3 the area this is built for
Answer:	There are Youtube videos. Most show spraying it with a hose in the opposite direction of the air flow. My experience, using soapy water in a tub, is from decades ago when my dad had a set-up with multiple 4 inch electrostatic filters, so I have no idea what is best now. My plan, when buying this, to try saving money and eliminating throwing away / shipping 12 disposable filters a year, is to check to see if there are any instructions shipped with the filter. If there are no instructions, I'll try the rinsing with the hose plan in the short term, and try checking with my furnace maintenance guy the next time he comes to check the system.

He said electrostatic filters are not MERV rated, but a lot of them really are if you look for them. This one is only 1" thick, so you can bet it can't possibly be better than about a MERV 5

Question:	Can this product;s height be shortened in any way? Not the linear size, but the height when installed. It sticks up too high. I do not want to cut it
Answer:	I have a 9 foot high ceiling and I had to cut off about two feet of the bottom of the ladder, so all you will have to do is trim down the required length to fit your 7 foot ceiling. should be a snap. Good luck.

STEP 1

Open the attic access and fit the attic cover into place . Ensure the sloped zipper part is in the direction of entry to enable easier access when unzipped.

STEP 2

Once fitted properly in place , staple the insulation cover to the wood frame of the attic entry every 4-6 inches all the way around leaving little to no air leaks.

STEP 3

Your attic access is now properly insulated restricting air flow in and out of the attic . Leave zipper completely closed when not in use to ensure no air leaks.
