9 best attic ladders
Attic ladders, also known as attic stairs or attic access ladders, are devices used to provide safe and convenient access to the attic space in a building. These ladders are typically installed in the ceiling of a home or building and can be extended or pulled down when needed. Here's what you should know about attic ladders:
Purpose: Attic ladders serve the primary purpose of providing access to the attic, which is often used for storage or to access HVAC equipment, electrical wiring, or other utilities located in the attic space.
Types: There are several types of attic ladders available, including:
- Folding Ladders: These are the most common type and fold up into the ceiling when not in use. They come in various materials such as wood, aluminum, or steel.
- Telescoping Ladders: These ladders slide in and out like an extension ladder and are ideal for tight spaces or where a folding ladder may not fit.
- Scissor Ladders: These ladders open and close in a scissor-like fashion and provide a wider access area.
Materials: Attic ladders are made from various materials, each with its own advantages:
- Wood: Wooden attic ladders are aesthetically pleasing and are often used in homes where appearance is a consideration.
- Aluminum: Aluminum ladders are lightweight, durable, and resistant to rust, making them a popular choice.
- Steel: Steel attic ladders are strong and can support heavier loads, making them suitable for commercial and industrial applications.
Installation: Installing an attic ladder typically involves cutting an opening in the ceiling, framing it, and attaching the ladder assembly. Proper installation is crucial to ensure safety and functionality.
Safety Features: Attic ladders are equipped with safety features such as handrails, non-slip steps, and insulated doors to prevent heat loss in the home.
Weight Capacity: The weight capacity of an attic ladder varies depending on its type and material. It's essential to choose a ladder that can support the intended load, including the weight of a person and any items being carried into the attic.
Insulation: Many attic ladders come with insulation options to prevent drafts and heat loss between the attic and the living space. This is important for energy efficiency.
Weatherproofing: Properly weatherproofing the attic ladder and the surrounding area is important to prevent drafts, moisture infiltration, and heat loss or gain.
Maintenance: Attic ladders require periodic maintenance to ensure they function correctly. This includes lubricating moving parts, inspecting for damage, and making any necessary repairs.
Usage: Attic ladders should be used with caution, and safety guidelines should be followed.Users should always face the ladder, maintain three points of contact (two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand), and avoid overloading it.
Attic ladders provide a convenient and safe means of accessing attic spaces for storage or maintenance purposes. The choice of ladder type and material should be based on factors such as the intended use, available space, and budget considerations. Proper installation and maintenance are essential for safety and long-term functionality.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the length of B in the last picture (showing the folding mechanism |
Answer: | it is not fire rated. |
Question: | What is the stair width? I have big feet and need a wide stair |
Answer: | Should fit...on center means center to center. So 24" on center is 22½" in between. |
Question: | Can this ladder be used for both residential and commercial |
Answer: | Yes, but it's a tight fit. The wooden frame is 21 3/4" wide, so while it will fit in a 22" joist bay, there's little tolerance for adjustment. Your joists had better be parallel in both directions. Mine were a little out of whack in both directions, so I had to make tapered shims to compensate. One hint: check for squareness of the assembly by closing the stairs and seeing if the door cover (presumed to be a rectangle) lines up. |
Question: | This version is currently about $20 cheaper than the 7' - 8'9"" model. Is there any reason this one can't be cut down shorter than the listed |
Answer: | Rather than risking your safety and welfare on an old unit, buy a new one. The ladder wood dries out with heat and old age, the hardware gets bent and loose. Probably one spring broke so they removed the other. How does it stay closed with no springs? My hardware and spring arms were getting very loose and the steps would crunch when you stepped on them from being dry. Weigh the risk $86 and free shipping for a new unit. At least that's what it was when I bought mine. Every time I use it now I ask myself why didn't I do this 15 years ago |
Question: | Is this ladder fire rated for garage installation? This is requirement in California |
Answer: | I think it might work but your first step would be close to the floor. Might be better to find a model mad for 8'-10'. I used this one in my garage which has 10'-6" ceiling, it is an awesome ladder. |
Question: | My studs are @22.5" on center, is this too small for the ladder? Or does the frame meant as 22.5" on center, rather than 24" (I think) on center |
Answer: | It should work. My ceiling is 10 feet and I had to cut over 2 feet off from it might be just a little steep |
Question: | Will the L22 4P fit in a 22" opening |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | I bought a house with this style of attic ladder, but the springs are missing. Does anyone know the length and diameter of the springs |
Answer: | I have this installed in my garage with an 11 ft ceiling.. It comes with a expandable pole to reach the loop to pull the door down. Once that is done, being 5ft 9 inches tall, I use a 3 step stool to stand on to fold out the ladder to the floor. I also use the step stool to stand on when folding it back up. I have had it installed for almost a year now and have always opened and closed it by myself. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what are the tread dimensions |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Can this be operated from above? I mean, if you were in the attic space and the unit/door is closed, how easy is it to extend the ladder to "go down |
Answer: | nope.. if it were it might come down when you pull the door down... as said it attached to the floor of the attic which also saves space...you are given a bar with a plastic hook to pull it down.. works really well.. |
Question: | Do you have literature you could mail |
Answer: | I can only say that without modification, the spring mechanism will not allow vertical retraction. Mines served me well although a bit flimsy, is equally as light, compact and functional. I'm 185, I couldn't recommend it for anyone over 220. |
Question: | How wide is each step? Are the steps really steps, or are they just single bars, like rungs |
Answer: | Yes, it should work provided that the other clearance requirements are met (it does require some space above and behind the attic opening where the ladder sits when it is stowed). The ladder is on the light weight side. I weigh @ 220 and I feel like I am about as heavy as could use it. |
Question: | When are you bringing back the telescopic ladder? This “compact” style doesn’t work if you do t have a lot of empty space inside your attic |
Answer: | Can't recall but can tell u that this beast starts sagging something terrible after a year or two. It's too heavy for its springs. |
Question: | Is it attached to the door |
Answer: | Tread depth is 5" & tread width is 20 1/2". Plenty of room for large feet. |
Question: | what ladder is suitable for vertical position |
Answer: | I do not think OSHA would allow commercial use, because of the lack of hand rails. It a ladder and not a stair case, and should not be used as such. |
Question: | I have a 30x30 rough opening and a 8' ceiling. Will this ladder work? Also, what is the quality of the ladder |
Answer: | I installed ours in my garage. The last 2 1/2 feet also fold; so, unlike others I've seen, this one has two hinged sections, rather than just one. I think if you don't cut too much off the bottom section, you should be good. However, before I purchased this ladder, I called the Louisville Ladder folks, and I suggest you call them before you buy. |

Question: | opening is 261/2 X 54 1/4 will it still work |
Answer: | It should be okay! But the edge position may need to be dealt with. |
Question: | Will this fit attic opening without pulldown ladder |
Answer: | I believe it should since the cover extends several inches "above" the attic opening. My ladder fits comfortably inside the cover when closed. |
Question: | Is there a kit for 20.5 inch openings |
Answer: | I looked around and didn't see any. Sorry. |
Question: | If I use my attic for storage, will this make it difficult to get things in and out |

User questions & answers
Question: | How is this installed exactly |
Answer: | There is usually an I bolt already in your attic ladder pull down door. Just remove the I bolt and then screw the kit provided threaded bolt into the back of the brass loop and push the other end of the threaded bolt through the existing hole the existing I bolt came out in your attic pull down door. Next place the kit provided washer and nut on the other end of the threaded bolt and tighten down with an adjustable wrench or small socket wrench. You should not need the cup hook supplied in the kit. The cup hook is there as an alternative way to install a hook if you don’t have the I bolt version. The existing I bolt usually is where the pull down cord is tied. I changed out two and they work very, very well. Hope this helps. |
Question: | How long is rod |
Answer: | 38.5 inches long. |
Question: | Spring system for attic ladder |
Answer: | This is not the spring system. It is just what is pictured, a loop hook for pulling down the ladder and a long handled tool to pull the loop, including a small hook to hang the tool on. It replaces the chain you use to pull down the ladder. If the ladder is in a visible place, it looks much neater and nicer. |
Question: | Does this kit come with a pull rod |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Looking for a counter balance arm for a kentucky ladder co p/n 53885-01. not sure when it was built. would this one work |
Answer: | Sorry can’t answer question. Need more information. |
Question: | I have an older set of wood pulldowns , the company is gone, are these generic enough to use on any / a different wood ladder |
Answer: | No, they are not "generic" enough. They are manufacturer specific. If your ladder was not made after 2010 you should not order these. |
Question: | Hello does this product come with the pivot plates where the lag bolts go, because my plates are damaged |
Answer: | Yes they do, but the hole pattern is different from what I had. The "newer" pivot plates were smaller. I had to drill out the pivot pins and use harden bolts and washers to mount my older style plates. |
Question: | I have a older set pre- 2010 yet your picture for 2010 and over looks like the correct set? My hinge has that square box with the hinge -to pivot |
Answer: | All hinges have a pivot point, the 55-1 uses a 5/16" x 3" lag screw to replace the pivot point. The 55-2 and the 55-1 are different and not interchangable. Werner ladder is the manufacturer, and the correct replacement part for a pre-2010 Werner ladder is a 55-1. This is for a Werner ladder only, if it is manufactured after 2010 you need a 55-2. |

Do you have problems with both, hot and cold air, getting through the attic door seal?
Problems in your comfort home often start with the attic seal cover because of the poor insulation attic which is not enough or good enough in order to prevent the air leak which affects the heating and cooling system. Your attic access cover is vital to your home's health, and energy efficiency.
At Panady, we consistently invest energy and resources in our products!
For that reason, in order to fulfill the highest standards of the most demanding customers, because we do know for sure that little details are the ones that create a big difference, we developed this rigid structure attic tent cover being one of the first choices made by most of the professional insulation contractors in the USA, but also across Europe.
Our attic door insulator is a must for you and your home!
This high-end & premium attic insulation cover is specially-designed to insulate attic entryways and also helps in keeping your house clean by improving your indoor air quality.
- Made of Fire-Resistant material which has a double layer made of polyethylene bubbles that acts as an extra thermal barrier in order to prevent condensation.
- Having a 15.3 R-Value and a major HVAC efficiency, it will help you to recover your investment just in a few months from the purchase; If you want to cut household costs, for sure you should insulate your attic access door!
Works during the entire year!
- During the summer months, attic insulation helps block the flow of air, which can limit thermal heat transfer and prevent major temperature fluctuations in your home.
In the summer, having enough attic insulation helps keep cool air in your home, and it does it by not being heated by the hot air in your attic.
Not only does this item allow for a heat-resistant barrier between your living space and the attic area, but it can also keep insulation components from penetrating into your house, which can be very harmful while remaining deadly hidden.
- On the other hand, during winter times this attic door cover will efficiently keep the warm air in your house from being cooled by the cold air in the attic, preventing the “chimney effect”, which drives up heating bills and makes homes feel drafty.
But… what is the ‘’chimney effect’’?
The chimney effect occurs when hot air escapes quickly through the attic stairway, creating a vacuum that draws cold air in through air leaks in the basement and ground floor. Once this cycle gets going, it can make your furnace run around the clock while preventing your home from feeling truly warm.
If the entryway to your attic is properly sealed, the heated air will have nowhere to go and your home will stay warm. If the entryway isn't properly sealed, the heated air will move into your attic and out of your home, causing your home's heating system to work overtime to keep your home adequately heated.
Simple installation
Just fix it over the attic door opening and staple the cover on the frame of the door. (Stapler not included).
