7 best attic fans home depots
Attic fans, often available at home improvement stores like Home Depot, are ventilation devices designed to help regulate the temperature and humidity in your attic space. Here's what you should know about attic fans available at Home Depot:
Purpose: Attic fans are used to improve attic ventilation. They help remove hot air, moisture, and stagnant air from the attic, which can contribute to more comfortable living spaces, reduced energy costs, and extended roof and building material life.
Types: Home Depot typically offers a variety of attic fan types, including roof-mounted attic fans and gable-mounted attic fans. Roof-mounted fans are installed on the roof, while gable-mounted fans are installed in the gable end of the attic.
Power Sources: Attic fans can be powered by electricity or solar energy. Electric attic fans are wired to your home's electrical system and can be controlled manually or with a thermostat. Solar-powered attic fans use solar panels to generate electricity, making them more energy-efficient.
Sizing: It's crucial to choose the right-sized attic fan for your attic space. The size is typically measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM), indicating how much air the fan can move. The size should be appropriate for the size and ventilation needs of your attic.
Thermostat and Humidistat Control: Attic fans often come with built-in thermostats and humidistats. The thermostat can be set to activate the fan when the attic temperature reaches a certain level, while the humidistat activates the fan when humidity levels rise, helping to prevent moisture-related issues.
Installation: Attic fan installation can be a DIY project for those with some electrical and carpentry skills. However, if you're not comfortable with the installation process, it's recommended to hire a professional to ensure it's done correctly.
Energy Efficiency: Properly installed and sized attic fans can help reduce the load on your home's HVAC system by venting hot air from the attic, potentially lowering cooling costs during the summer months. Solar-powered attic fans are particularly energy-efficient as they don't rely on grid electricity.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance includes cleaning the fan blades and checking for any debris that may obstruct airflow. Electric attic fans may also require lubrication of moving parts and occasional motor replacement if necessary.
Benefits: Attic fans can help prevent heat buildup in the attic, reducing the risk of roof damage, prolonging the life of roofing materials, and potentially preventing ice dams in the winter. They can also help improve indoor comfort and reduce energy bills.
When considering the purchase of an attic fan from Home Depot, it's important to assess your attic's size and ventilation needs, choose the appropriate type and size of fan, and consider factors like power source, controls, and energy efficiency to make an informed decision that suits your home's requirements.

User questions & answers
Question: | do you have to oil it |
Answer: | Oiling the motor once or twice a year will extend the life of the motor. If the motor requires oiling, oil ports or openings will be located on both motor end plates. Use a SAE 20 non-detergent motor oil. |
Question: | Has anyone retrofitted one of these to a roof vent |
Answer: | I did one in a gable vent, it comes with nice instructions. I mounted it on a piece of plywood then mounted two 2x4s to the gable vent framing then mounted the plywood to the 2x4. It was easy, my 12 yr old son and I did it in 30 minutes. It was summer time in the attic so we wanted to do it fast. I bought a cheap extension and cut off one end and wired it to the leads then ran it to an outlet in the attic. |
Question: | How long is the thermostat wiring. How far will it reach away from the fan |
Answer: | Wiring on the fan thermostat is very short about 12" or so. I rewired it and moved the thermostat to a location about 25 feet away. This allows me to set the thermostat without having to crawl down the entire length of the attic. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a two story, 3700 sf home with a solar attic fan. How much of cooling difference will adding the whole house fan make to cooling my house |
Answer: | The solar attic fan will probably make the whole house fan work more efficiently as the attic should be cooler. You can definitely benefit from the whole house fan though as it will cool your house and the attic rather than the attic only. I would only add that the 36-inch fan would probably be more adequate for your size house, but that depends also on the footage vs fan allocation. My house is 3400 sq ft and the fan works great for us. |
Question: | I live in the North East, how well do the shutters prevent cold air from sinking from the attic into the house during the winter months |
Answer: | It is pretty good at stopping the air flow but you will still loose a lot of heat. The metal shutters have no insulation value so you basically have a 3 foot square hole in your ceiling. This hole also lets in a lot of heat in the summer when the fan is not in use. There is a fix for this. There are several videos on You Tube that show you how to construct a cover, inside your attic, out of 2 inch insulating foam. It has doors that will still open and close when the fan is on. I have not built mine yet but plan to as soon as it cools off some. |
Question: | How wide are the vent veins that actually move? Will they fit between 24" on center truss giving you 22 1/2" opening |
Answer: | The cut out is 26" if i remember.. I tried to install it your method but couldnt and had to use the joint in middle method with extra wood for frame.. This fan has paid for itself already. Works great |
Question: | I have a 950 sq ft home. It says not to install in smaller that 1200 sq ft.... If I left it on low would it be ok |
Answer: | Approx 800 square foot here... We open the windows and leave the fan on low; it performs admirably. Make sure your attic venting is adequate; that makes the biggest difference. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do you have a similar model with a plug |
Answer: | Contrary to the other commentor, some assistants can unlock via voice such as Apple's Homekit. However, HomePod currently won't, and if using a phone requires that phone to be unlocked. So yes, if your phone was face up near the door, and there was an open window or something and the phone was still unlocked, theoretically a person could yell to unlock. But realistically, since phone auto lock shouldn't be an issue, and wouldn't be able to yell through and outside door, so would require an open window, or very thing glass and the mic super close to the door. |
Question: | My power supply cord has 3 wires. Connected black to black, white to white, and green wire to a mounting screw. Fan not working. Any idea |
Answer: | Sort-of- depending on what you mean by 'have a code'. Each phone would have the ability to lock and unlock the lock, and each would be set up as their own user with access that you could control (ie, if you decided you only wanted 3 kids, you could revoke access for the one you didn't want anymore). Also, you could see in the logs which kid opened the lock and when. But the kids themselves wouldn't have to remember any codes, they would just have to remember to carry their phones. Unless you added the accessory keypad device- then they COULD have a unique keycode to punch in for access in case they forgot their phones. I hope that helps. PS- you should consult a lawyer before abandoning one of your children, as there may be legal ramifications. |
Question: | What is the cfm |
Answer: | Yes you will! This page walks you through how to do that: https://www.yalehome.com/en/yale/yalehome/support/yale-smart-home-support/samsung-smartthings/pin-code-management/ |
Question: | Will this fit between 16 inch studs (14.5 inches |
Answer: | We test our locks using both an ANSI/BHMA standard and a special proprietary salt water test to help ensure quality and operation in these types of environments. Our finish and hardware is covered by a lifetime limited warranty - electronics are covered by one year. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I wire an extension cord to it with these specs, 125 volts / 10 Amp power with a max of 300 volts |
Answer: | Yes! I actually use an extension cord to the nearest outlet about six feet. Also added switches as there are two fans together so I can run one or both. Also use the thermostat controlled switches. |
Question: | Thermostat continues to stick 'on or off', unless i 'tap' the thermostat, regardless of the setting. can i get just a replacement thermostat |
Answer: | I have had several brands and none of the thermostats work well, alway hang up or will not come on. I turn mine on in April and off November, and don't have to keep check on it. |
Question: | I installed as per directions and wiring diagram but the unit is blowing air instead of drawing. Complete reversal of what it should be doing |
Answer: | I have installed several exhaust fans and they all work on the same principle, They blow the air outward drawing the air in through the soffet or other vents. The first question to answer is, are we talking about "blowing" in the same sense. Since this is a single phase AC motor, it doesn't matter how the wires are connected. If you want it to blow the air inward, Steve Jobes gave the right answer. |
Question: | Can I install this fan inside my attic on a wall to exhaust the hot air from my office into my attic and push it out the louverd gable back end |
Answer: | I may not fully understand your situation, but this fan is quite loud. You would not want it running in your office. Put it on the inside of the louvered gable back end which I take to be some distance from your office. |

Question: | How many/much attic vents do you need(the actual vents that let air out of the attic |
Answer: | You can set multiple alarms. I don't know if the alarm shuts off automatically as we don't let it go very long. There is a remote that can be used to turn off the alarm without needing to get to the actual clock buttons. |
Question: | The qa deluxe 5500(r) comes with a single speed wireless remote. can i skip hooking up the wired controller and operate using wireless remote only |
Answer: | It has a remote, buttons in back. |
Question: | What is the decibel rating of the |
Answer: | Sorry! My father hasn't used the clock as an alarm. I just want him to know what day it is as well as the time. He says it's helpful. |
Question: | how does the temperature control work |
Answer: | No, this is not an atomic clock that, via wireless signal, sets itself and adjusts for DST. Atomic clocks all receive their time info from the same location, making it consistent no matter where you are in the developed world. However, this can be done without it being “atomic” with only a wireless signal, is considered less accurate, but works just the same. This model, however, is neither. Just manual time setting. |
Question: | What are the required cut out dimensions for the ceiling damper |

Answer: | No. The top does not come off. The drawers open. |
Question: | Is the 12" diameter from hub to blade end, or blade end to opposite side blade end |
Answer: | No you can't put different knobs. These knobs are welded in the back. This is a really cool storage box I use it for makeup but you can use it for anything and it is durable I like others that I have bought from a different places. |
Question: | Is this counter clockwise rotation |
Answer: | It is 9 and 1/4 inches by 5 and 1/4 inches. |
Question: | What size fuse would you use in fuse box |
Answer: | This is for the tray. There is one tray, you purchase the hand towels separately. I love the tray- sturdy, clean lines, modern |
Question: | What is the recommended distance to install down from the peak of the roof |
Answer: | The inside measure of the tray is 5 1/4" W x 9 1/4 L. Hope this helps! |
Question: | Can you over-ride the thermostat (75-135) to work at lower temperatures in the winter, say 35-40 degrees? (problem with humidity build-up |
Answer: | It may rust but that's still a great idea. |
Question: | Is there an accessory or accepted method to insulate the unit to eliminate heat loss during winter months when the unit is shut down |

BROAN Roof Mounted Attic Ventilators, 120-Volt
Powerful and easy to install, these units supplement or replace air conditioning by removing the blanket of hot, trapped air from attics.
Too often, attic ventilation is overlooked, not to mention ignored as a place for energy savings. That’s where Broan solutions make sense. Consider this: air trapped in the attic can easily reach 150-degrees or more. With Broan ventilation solutions, it’s still a full 60-degrees cooler in the attic on a 90-degree day. That’s why attic ventilation is critical to making any home more comfortable while lowering energy costs. Air conditioners can run less and won’t have to work as hard. Humid, stagnant air can be removed, drawing fresh dry air across the surfaces. Attics can be drier and cooler – the perfect tools to help fight potential moisture damage.

QA-Deluxe whole house fans consist of a heavy-duty state of the art spun aluminum fan housing and heavy-duty fan guard for rigidity and safety. Motor mounting brackets with rubber bushings reduce noise & vibration from the highly reliable permanent split capacitor motor and metal fan blade.
Quiet Operation
QA Deluxe fans use cloth-lined, acoustic ducting, and a suspended fan motor for noise reduction. Heavy-duty support brackets provide additional support to keep the damper off drywall, further reducing vibration transfer.
R-5 Insulated Damper
An R-5 insulated damper seals off the living space from the attic whenever the fan is not operational.
All our QA-Deluxe and Centric Air models are installed the same way.
As long the joists in your attic are typical of most homes (16″ or 24″on-center) there is no framing required. You simply cut a hole in the ceiling (or vertical wall), install the mounting brackets, damper box and ceiling diffuser with a few screws. Then connect the ductwork and support the fan assembly to the rafters in the attic. Finally, plug the whole house fan into a standard electrical outlet.
What is HVI-916?
HVI-916 is the testing procedure for measuring energy efficiency and airflow (Cubic Feet of Air Per Minute "CFM") of whole house fans. It is the true apples to apples comparisons. All other CFM ratings are whatever the manufacturer makes up.
Should I purchase a whole house fan even though I have air conditioning?
Big yes! Extremely hot air gets trapped in your attic during hot summer days. Through the late afternoon and evening, air conditioning has the chore of battling this heat that is radiating into the home. Because hot air within the house rises to the highest levels and cold air sinks to the lowest levels, air conditioning is fighting a losing battle. Customers relying on A/C alone find that they end up with a hot upper level and cold lower level.
How much does it cost to operate?
The cost to operate a whole house fan is about 10% of what it costs to run a typical residential air conditioner.
