12 best wi fi thermostat
A Wi-Fi thermostat is a smart home device that allows you to remotely control and program the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system in your home. These thermostats connect to your home's Wi-Fi network, enabling you to manage your HVAC system from a mobile app or a web portal. Here are the key points about Wi-Fi thermostats:
Remote Control: Wi-Fi thermostats provide the convenience of remote control. You can adjust the temperature settings, change heating or cooling modes, and create schedules for your HVAC system from your smartphone, tablet, or computer, no matter where you are.
Energy Efficiency: Many Wi-Fi thermostats come with features designed to optimize energy efficiency. They can learn your heating and cooling preferences over time and adjust the HVAC system to save energy while maintaining comfort. Some also provide energy consumption reports.
Programmability: Wi-Fi thermostats are programmable, allowing you to create heating and cooling schedules based on your daily routines. You can set different temperature profiles for various times of the day or week, helping you save on energy costs.
Compatibility: Before purchasing a Wi-Fi thermostat, it's crucial to ensure it's compatible with your HVAC system. These thermostats typically work with a wide range of heating and cooling systems, but some may require specific wiring or configurations.
Voice Control: Many Wi-Fi thermostats are compatible with voice-controlled smart home systems like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple HomeKit. This allows you to adjust the temperature settings using voice commands.
Geofencing: Some Wi-Fi thermostats use geofencing technology to detect when you're leaving or approaching your home. They can automatically adjust the temperature to save energy when you're away and return to your preferred settings when you're close to home.
Alerts and Notifications: Wi-Fi thermostats can send you alerts and notifications related to your HVAC system, such as maintenance reminders, filter replacement reminders, or notifications about extreme temperature changes in your home.
Installation: Depending on your HVAC system and wiring, you may need professional installation for a Wi-Fi thermostat. Alternatively, some models are designed for easy DIY installation.
Integration: Wi-Fi thermostats can often be integrated with other smart home devices and systems. For example, you can create automation routines that adjust the thermostat settings when you lock or unlock your smart door lock.
Security: To protect your privacy and data, it's essential to secure your Wi-Fi thermostat with strong, unique passwords and keep its firmware up to date.
Wi-Fi thermostats offer convenience, energy savings, and enhanced control over your home's HVAC system. They are a popular choice for homeowners looking to modernize their heating and cooling systems and enjoy the benefits of a connected home. User questions & answers
Question: | Does this require a c wire? why does it need aaa batteries |
Answer: | No need to have a Honeywell gateway for the Honeywell rth6580wf. You only need a wireless Internet modem dsl/broadband service phone line. |
Question: | Will this work with the nest remote temperature sensors |
Answer: | I found this information on another website (http://programmablethermostat.info/honeywell-rth6580wf-wi-fi-7-day-programmable-thermostat/)Real Time Clock:This thermostat does NOT have an internal battery. All program and installer set up functions are saved on to a chip and retained in case of a power outage. It does utilize a super capacitor for short term retention of the clock. If there is a lengthy power outage and if the RTH6580WF is connected to the internet, when power is restored it will automatically resynchronize with the internet time. |
Question: | I have 4 wires, 1st wire is w/ 2nd y/3rd is g/4th is rh will this thermostat work with these wires |
Answer: | If you have no Internet, this thermostat will simply operate as a non-WiFi enabled programmable thermostat (e.g., follow the schedule that you previously created) OR you use the buttons on it to adjust it manually. The only thing you lose with not having the Internet is the ability to use your phone to interact with it (e.g., change the settings and/or update the schedule). Just pretend like it is 1970 and adjust the thermostat like your parents did. |
Question: | Does this work with the nest temperature sensor |
Answer: | I did the following in a two-wire heat-only setup and it worked: 1) On the back panel of the new thermostat, remove the small jumper between the RC and R connectors. 2) Connect the outputs of a 24V AC transformer (I happened to use https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DJ7RHS5?ref=ppx_pt2_dt_b_prod_image) to the RC and C connectors on the new thermostat back panel. It does not matter which of these two wires goes to RC and which goes to C. 3) Connect the wire that had gone to either RC or R on the old thermostat to the R connector on the new thermostat back panel. Connect the wire that had gone to W on the old thermostat to the W connector on the new thermostat back panel. 4) Plug in the transformer to a nearby 120 V outlet. Snap the body of the new thermostat onto its back panel. Continue with the instructions provided with the new thermostat. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you program just the fan mode |
Answer: | Hi there, this unit REQUIRES an internet connection, based on a WiFi (wireless) connection. Once the device establishes an internet connection to the Honeywell cloud (which is cool!) you can effectively control the thermoostat from anywhere you have an internet connection.... even your smartphone. Enjoy! |
Question: | Is it smart enough to decide whether to run the heater or cooler to keep the temperature fixed |
Answer: | The WiFi setup requires you to create an account on mytotalconnectcomfort.com. It’s not that hard. The biggest problem with this thermostat is the unreliable remote connectivity ever since Honeywell spun off their thermostat division 6 months ago. Now it’s frequent periods of time where the thermostat will not respond to remote commands. It’s maddening |
Question: | What if i have a C wire |
Answer: | When you put it on circulate, the fan comes on for about 10 minutes every 20 minutes or so. The owners manual says it runs about 35% of the time. I used this feature this Fall with the system off (no heat or a/c) just to circulate the air through my Filtrete filters. |
Question: | Can you create a fan schedule? I’d like the fan to always run from 10pm until 6am |
Answer: | These thermostats are not the same. Even the screen is different. The RTH9580 doesn't have the 3D look of the 9300 series. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I need to have a Honeywell gateway? This is an additional piece of hardware used by some of the Honeywell thermostats (ex. Prestige |
Answer: | This Thermostat truly Rocks!! - It has a screen lock as well as Security codes for front panel access. It also has security if you want to use WiFi to remotely access it. Setup is a breeze also. I HIGHLY recommend this thermostat. The NEST is an excellent choice as well. |
Question: | Without battery backup, what happens in a power outage? Is there internal memory that keeps the settings and how long, and is thermostat still usable |
Answer: | What's Google home? |
Question: | What happens to the room temperature when the internet is down |
Answer: | I have a 5 year old Lux Thermostat. When we bought a new Rheem this past summer, the technician pulled the batteries out of it saying they were not needed. End result, is every time we have a power outage, the thermostat looses it's programming. it losses it when we change back and forth from heat to cool also. I'd be wary of any advice about removing batteries unless you're sure that it does not affect the thermostat memory. i say this as the A/C is on and it's program is set on 72 degrees. i had it set on 75 and have not attempted to reprogram it since that would be just a temporary fix it resets down to 72 often not sure why. |
Question: | How do I figure out if this will work with my wiring? I read that there might be issues with the electric wires (might be missing one COMMON wire |
Answer: | I just went to Best Buy to play with the RTH9585WF and see what is the difference in the settings. Color options do seem to be slightly different. Both have 7 day programing (four settings per day) plus vacation etc. The literature says the 9585 automatically switches between cool/heat but in 9585 system (MODE) there is only "heat", "cool" and "off". So my guess is the automatic is not a setting you pick. 9560 offers the forth option of automatic and will show heat and cool adjustments on the home page setting on the panel. Other than that I do not see any difference. My guess is the 9585 has a newer chip set but honestly I have no idea. I called Honeywell and the tech could not even tell me the difference other than it's the second generation model. Both work with Alexa and other smart devices and smart hubs. I'm still thinking of returning the 9580 for the 9585 but if I have to switch between heat and cold that is a deal breaker and I kind of like seeing the date when I walk buy. My guess is in a few years Honeywell will over a unit to compete with the Ecobee with something like Alexa built into it. Frankly, I'd purchase the Ecobeen 4 but my wife of 35 years thought the Ecobeen being black and kind of large and the white mounting plate was ugly and after 35 years of marriage I felt like this decision was not worth the fight. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this product able to control whole home humidifiers |
Answer: | Based on Samsung's website - YES, this will work with SmartThings! I have had one of these thermostats for a few years now and have been content with using it just through wifi - I plan to play around with this now that I know it is compatible!! I know this is an old post, BUT - I love this thermostat and would absolutely use it again. |
Question: | Can you use the temperature schedule on the unit, and also apple homekit geofencing to get the benefits of both rather than either or |
Answer: | It will reconnect automatically once your power comes back on as long as the modem/router also comes back on and reconnects to the internet. |
Question: | What is difference between this thermostat and the white wifi version |
Answer: | I called Honeywell and was told the "C" wire is blue and in fact mine is blue. I have no black wire. I have 5 wires yellow, white, blue, green and red. I was told I could check for AC voltage by connecting my meter to the red and blue wires. The Honeywell tech was very helpful. 800 468-1502. |
Question: | Does this have the capability of showing me a temperature chart of the past 12 hrs |
Answer: | There is no functional difference between the two. This TH9320WF5003 is white and the RTH9580WF1005 is silver. The RTH9580WF1005 is the retail model with a 1 year warranty and this one is intended to be a contractor only model with a 5 year warranty. Honeywell's former policy was that the TH9320WF5003 warranty wouldn't be honored if not installed by a contractor. However, they have since changed this. You now get 1 year with this too if you install it yourself. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this work with smartthings |
Answer: | Min Cycle Off Time: Enables you to configure the compressor off time between cycles. This is adjustable from 240 - 900 Seconds |
Question: | If power goes out and wi-fi is lost, can it be reconnected remotely or automatically |
Answer: | If it is not connected to internet, remote access is nit possible. You cannot access it by your mobile device but thermostat will still works as it is. It has its own power and if you set it before the internet connection is lost, it will still works with all your settings and preferences. |
Question: | What do you mean bty requiring "C" wire |
Answer: | Yes but the difference between heating and cooling will auto set with a minimum 5 degree difference. 5 degrees is quite a bit so I really don't use it much. You can't just set it to 70 and have it hold that temp and if I had to guess, it's due to the fact that heating and cooling use the same ducts and constantly switching from hot to cold will cause condensation and really isn't efficient at all. Really, the only time you'd use this feature is during fall and spring when the temperature outside can vary. Generally, mine is either set to heat or cool depending on the season. That being said, if you're ok with a 5 degree swing either way then it works well :-). |
Question: | What is the difference between this thermostat and the rth9580wf |

User questions & answers
Question: | This only works with "c" wire. Doesnt work with batteries |
Answer: | Well that is what a thermostat does, so I'd say yes. You typically pick a low temp and high temp and the thermostat keeps it between those temperatures. As a side note, I replaced this unit with a Nest Thermostat. |
Question: | Is this compatible with a central air and heating system |
Answer: | That will be good. Without one the ST55 won't receive 24VAC and will only run on battery power. Battery isn't enough to keep the Wifi radio powered and will shut down after about 2 hours if there is no call for heat within that time. I use this in my garage and only heat it before I go out to it and spend any time. It spends days without calling for heat and the only way I could keep the Wifi on was to wire in a common wire. |
Question: | Is it compatible with zoned system |
Answer: | Updated Answer: THANK YOU to Albert who pointed out below that the fan can be controlled through SmartThings! It was annoying to have to set up another app and service to do this, but it is a workaround to get around Sensi's frustrating limitation. SmartThings allows you to set the fan to Auto, On, or Circulate (but not the percentage of time to circulate) and automate that on any schedule you want. Unfortunately, Alexa and Google still don't allow you to control the fan at all, even though Sensi's API apparently allows it. Original Answer from June 6, 2020: No, you can't do a schedule like if you want it to run all the time during the night. Also, you can't control the fan from Alexa to schedule it that way. Very annoying and unreasonable that they wouldn't add that option since you can turn it on manually from the app. They do have the auto-circulate feature, but that's not the same. |
