Ordinary thermostats only read the temperature in one room, but are supposed to deliver comfort in all rooms. Ecobee3 remote sensors deliver the right temperature in the rooms that matter most. Now homekit enabled. Ecobee3 sensors know which rooms are occupied to deliver the right temperature in the right places. And they know whether someone's home to help you save energy and money when you're away. Ecobee3 comes with 1 free remote sensor that measures temperature and occupancy. You can have up to 32 sensors. The more you add, the smarter your Ecobee3 becomes at delivering comfort where it matters and savings where it counts.
- Works with Alexa for voice control (Alexa device sold separately).
- Smart, really smart - intuitively understands when to turn on your heating or cooling equipment based on your home's unique energy profile, the weather outside, and thousands of other data points to make sure you're comfortable at all times
- Knows you have a life - senses whether anyone's home and which rooms are occupied, delivering comfort when you're at home and saving you energy and money when you're not
User questions & answers
Question: | My thermostat is only used for heating the house and only has 2 wires, a red and white. Can i still use this ecobee |
Answer: | If you have a really old 2-wire system, one that does NOT have modern solid state controls, then Ecobee won't work right off the shelf, even with their 2-3 wire power conversion module. These heating plants predate the 1980s and use "dry contact" thermostats. You can make it work if you install a 24v isolation relay. Ecobee outlines the procedure on their web site, but it takes some basic electrical wiring knowledge. I'm not sure if you can use the 2-wire conversion module with an isolation relay - it should be possible somehow or other. If you have a third wire running to the thermostat (it's often there) then you should use it to run 24V to the Ecobee, and ignore the conversion module. |
Question: | Is there a provision to bypass the 'auto off' motion sensor so that my dogs don't suffer from the heat when I'm out |
Answer: | Yes- you can disable the Smart Home/Away feature under the "Sensors" section of the interface, so that the thermostat will follow only the schedule/preset temperatures. In my case, I disabled it because I wanted the opposite functionality (I didn't want the system turning on if I stopped at home for a hour over lunch). Note that the "Follow Me" feature is a separate setting (found in the Sensors section as well) that allows the system to track where you are in the house and attempt to heat/cool that part of the house closer to your desired setpoint. |
Question: | Does the main thermostat have a sensor for the first floor? Or is the white sensor needed for that floor? Is the black hub a sensor |
Answer: | Main thermostat and white (remote) includes a temperature sensor and a motion sensor. First, you don't have to use the remote sensor. Second, if you use the remote sensor, the main sensor will combine the input of both (main and remote) temperature sensors and based on the amount of time spent in each area using the motion sensor. If motion is detected more near the main and less near the remote (as a %), then the main temperature will weigh heavier than the remote. As well, you do not need to use remotes and can be assigned to work during selected schedules only. It's quite amazing, but I haven't used them on my system yet. I figured I would learn the rest of the system before I introduced them. |
Question: | is this a different model than the ecobee3 that is slightly less expensive? Also if wifi is out can you control it fully manually |
Answer: | Yes, this is a different model then the ecobee3 lite. The ecobee will still be able to function as a thermostat and talk to the sensors, if your wifi goes out. You can still manually control your heating and cooling at your ecobee without wifi. |
Question: | Compatible with alexa? do i have to buy nexia bridge for it to work |
Answer: | For the thermostat alone, no nexia bridge is needed. |
Question: | Can you set Temperature limits on this thermostat |
Answer: | Yes you can. |
Question: | The connection key to setup wifi will not work so i am not able to connect it to wifi. anyone know the fix |
Answer: | Must use your phone and the app. |
Question: | Is this thermostat compatible with the xr624 connection |
Answer: | Yes, it is compatible. The XR724 replaces XL624. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this require a c wire? why does it need aaa batteries |
Answer: | No need to have a Honeywell gateway for the Honeywell rth6580wf. You only need a wireless Internet modem dsl/broadband service phone line. |
Question: | Will this work with the nest remote temperature sensors |
Answer: | I found this information on another website (http://programmablethermostat.info/honeywell-rth6580wf-wi-fi-7-day-programmable-thermostat/)Real Time Clock:This thermostat does NOT have an internal battery. All program and installer set up functions are saved on to a chip and retained in case of a power outage. It does utilize a super capacitor for short term retention of the clock. If there is a lengthy power outage and if the RTH6580WF is connected to the internet, when power is restored it will automatically resynchronize with the internet time. |
Question: | I have 4 wires, 1st wire is w/ 2nd y/3rd is g/4th is rh will this thermostat work with these wires |
Answer: | If you have no Internet, this thermostat will simply operate as a non-WiFi enabled programmable thermostat (e.g., follow the schedule that you previously created) OR you use the buttons on it to adjust it manually. The only thing you lose with not having the Internet is the ability to use your phone to interact with it (e.g., change the settings and/or update the schedule). Just pretend like it is 1970 and adjust the thermostat like your parents did. |
Question: | Does this work with the nest temperature sensor |
Answer: | I did the following in a two-wire heat-only setup and it worked: 1) On the back panel of the new thermostat, remove the small jumper between the RC and R connectors. 2) Connect the outputs of a 24V AC transformer (I happened to use https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DJ7RHS5?ref=ppx_pt2_dt_b_prod_image) to the RC and C connectors on the new thermostat back panel. It does not matter which of these two wires goes to RC and which goes to C. 3) Connect the wire that had gone to either RC or R on the old thermostat to the R connector on the new thermostat back panel. Connect the wire that had gone to W on the old thermostat to the W connector on the new thermostat back panel. 4) Plug in the transformer to a nearby 120 V outlet. Snap the body of the new thermostat onto its back panel. Continue with the instructions provided with the new thermostat. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do I control multiple thermostats via the app - do I need separate thermostats for each room temperature zone |
Answer: | The app controls multiple thermostats , I thin you would need seperate thermostats for each zone of the burner. If you are using a two wire 110 set up you have to connect the blue wire to the copper ground or they won’t work I learned that the hard way. I am running two and they work nice. |
Question: | What is the difference between single pole and double pole |
Answer: | in reference to the thermostat, single pole would be for a 120 volt circuit. Double pole would be for a 208/240 volt circuit. 120 would only turn off one leg. 208/240 turns off both hot legs |
Question: | Does this thermostat integrate with alexa and google home |
Answer: | No, this thermostat does not integrate with Alexa or Google Home |
Question: | How many watts can this handle |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I need to have a Honeywell gateway? This is an additional piece of hardware used by some of the Honeywell thermostats (ex. Prestige |
Answer: | This Thermostat truly Rocks!! - It has a screen lock as well as Security codes for front panel access. It also has security if you want to use WiFi to remotely access it. Setup is a breeze also. I HIGHLY recommend this thermostat. The NEST is an excellent choice as well. |
Question: | Without battery backup, what happens in a power outage? Is there internal memory that keeps the settings and how long, and is thermostat still usable |
Answer: | What's Google home? |
Question: | What happens to the room temperature when the internet is down |
Answer: | I have a 5 year old Lux Thermostat. When we bought a new Rheem this past summer, the technician pulled the batteries out of it saying they were not needed. End result, is every time we have a power outage, the thermostat looses it's programming. it losses it when we change back and forth from heat to cool also. I'd be wary of any advice about removing batteries unless you're sure that it does not affect the thermostat memory. i say this as the A/C is on and it's program is set on 72 degrees. i had it set on 75 and have not attempted to reprogram it since that would be just a temporary fix it resets down to 72 often not sure why. |
Question: | How do I figure out if this will work with my wiring? I read that there might be issues with the electric wires (might be missing one COMMON wire |
Answer: | I just went to Best Buy to play with the RTH9585WF and see what is the difference in the settings. Color options do seem to be slightly different. Both have 7 day programing (four settings per day) plus vacation etc. The literature says the 9585 automatically switches between cool/heat but in 9585 system (MODE) there is only "heat", "cool" and "off". So my guess is the automatic is not a setting you pick. 9560 offers the forth option of automatic and will show heat and cool adjustments on the home page setting on the panel. Other than that I do not see any difference. My guess is the 9585 has a newer chip set but honestly I have no idea. I called Honeywell and the tech could not even tell me the difference other than it's the second generation model. Both work with Alexa and other smart devices and smart hubs. I'm still thinking of returning the 9580 for the 9585 but if I have to switch between heat and cold that is a deal breaker and I kind of like seeing the date when I walk buy. My guess is in a few years Honeywell will over a unit to compete with the Ecobee with something like Alexa built into it. Frankly, I'd purchase the Ecobeen 4 but my wife of 35 years thought the Ecobeen being black and kind of large and the white mounting plate was ugly and after 35 years of marriage I felt like this decision was not worth the fight. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you program just the fan mode |
Answer: | Hi there, this unit REQUIRES an internet connection, based on a WiFi (wireless) connection. Once the device establishes an internet connection to the Honeywell cloud (which is cool!) you can effectively control the thermoostat from anywhere you have an internet connection.... even your smartphone. Enjoy! |
Question: | Is it smart enough to decide whether to run the heater or cooler to keep the temperature fixed |
Answer: | The WiFi setup requires you to create an account on mytotalconnectcomfort.com. It’s not that hard. The biggest problem with this thermostat is the unreliable remote connectivity ever since Honeywell spun off their thermostat division 6 months ago. Now it’s frequent periods of time where the thermostat will not respond to remote commands. It’s maddening |
Question: | What if i have a C wire |
Answer: | When you put it on circulate, the fan comes on for about 10 minutes every 20 minutes or so. The owners manual says it runs about 35% of the time. I used this feature this Fall with the system off (no heat or a/c) just to circulate the air through my Filtrete filters. |
Question: | Can you create a fan schedule? I’d like the fan to always run from 10pm until 6am |
Answer: | These thermostats are not the same. Even the screen is different. The RTH9580 doesn't have the 3D look of the 9300 series. |
