13 best dial programmable thermostats
A dial programmable thermostat is a type of thermostat that allows users to set and program temperature settings using a physical dial or knob. These thermostats are typically used to control heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in homes and commercial buildings, providing a way to regulate indoor temperatures and manage energy consumption.
Key features of dial programmable thermostats may include:
Programmable Settings: Users can set different temperature settings for various times of the day, allowing for automated adjustments based on a predefined schedule. For example, the thermostat can be programmed to lower the temperature during the day when occupants are away and raise it in the evening when they return.
Dial Interface: These thermostats typically have a dial or knob interface that users can turn to set the desired temperature. Users can also use the dial to navigate and set the programming schedule.
Manual Override: Dial programmable thermostats often have a manual override feature that allows users to temporarily override the programmed settings and adjust the temperature to their preference.
Compatibility: They are usually compatible with various HVAC systems, including central heating and cooling systems, furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, and air conditioning units.
Energy Efficiency: By allowing users to create temperature schedules, dial programmable thermostats can help reduce energy consumption and lower utility bills by optimizing HVAC operation based on occupancy and preferences.
Ease of Use: The dial interface is typically user-friendly and intuitive, making it easy for homeowners to set and adjust temperature settings without the need for complex programming.
Temperature Range: These thermostats usually have a wide temperature range to accommodate different comfort preferences and varying weather conditions.
Installation and Maintenance: Installation of dial programmable thermostats is relatively straightforward, and they typically require minimal maintenance.
Overall, dial programmable thermostats are a practical solution for managing indoor temperatures efficiently, promoting energy savings, and enhancing overall comfort within a building.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this gonna melt on me? I've been reading the reviews and I'm getting really concerned. I bought and installed 2 of these on a wall heater w/ a fan |
Answer: | Yes. I am using one on a 12 volt system and 5 on 500 milivolt systems. It should also work on a 24 volt system. It should be noted that this thermostat receives power to run the display and electronics from 2 AAA batteries that last a long time. These are required on a 500 milivolt system. The batteries can be omitted on a 12 or 24 volt system if (and only if) you have a 3 wire connection to the thermostat. The 3rd wire is the common terminal (which is not required for a mechanical thermostat with no clock, light, or electronics). You may use the batteries with a 3 wire system that doesn't need them. I believe this will cause it to hold its setting if the power goes out and comes back on. I believe (but am not sure) that the setting will be lost on a 3 wire system without batteries if the power goes out. On a 500 milivolt system the batteries are required. |
Question: | What is the lowest temperature setting? Some thermostats won't go below 55 degrees, I would like a low of no more than 45 degrees |
Answer: | low of 40,high of 90 |
Question: | I have only two thick wires, white and red. Do you know which one s/b connected on where |
Answer: | I am using this thermostat on a 2 wire setup. It works fine. Boba |
Question: | What is the maximum watts at 120v installation |
Answer: | There is no programming of this thermostat. It is for heat only. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where to find replacement covers - the clear plastic disc - that has disappeared |
Answer: | we use it to deep clean metal kitchen sinks at my work so i would assume so. you should be able to find a list of materials it’s safe on through google as well. |
Question: | How accurate is the temperature gauge |
Answer: | Yes, it is an awesome product!! It is the only product that I use for stainless steel pots & pans because all others either scratch the surface or leave the "rainbow effect" that often occurs on stainless steel. I use this product on my glass cook top & it works great with no worry about damaging the surface. |
Question: | Can this thermometer be used for heat only via the wires are hooked in? Also, when the battery dies, does one just throw the thermostat away |
Answer: | It would assist but may not completely work. |
Question: | I'm looking for an HVAC thermostat. Wondering if this was one as I don't see the term "HVAC" anywhere on here. I have electric heat and central air |
Answer: | Well I can't guarantee that BUT if anything will I would bet on this. All I can factually attest to is: it took the water spots off my car's windows, took stains out of my kitchen sink, stains out of my porcelain tub, burnt baked on stains on my pyrex baking dish. Anyone who knows me will assert to my "neatness" and despite every conceivable effort nothing else had accomplished the above until Bar Keepers :) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I manually override the preprogrammed setting |
Answer: | Yes, as it removes stains on the toilet without scratching the porcelain surface. |
Question: | I currently have a 120v thermostat that turns a hot water pump on and off. I want to replace it with a programmable one. will this work |
Answer: | I'm not sure why you would use it on a kitchen sink when there are a lot of non abrasive products to clean the sink. These are sold to clean toilets, which get very hard water in them, for some strange reason. Since water sits in a toilet that does give it time to form that difficult ring to remove at times. If you really felt the need to use something this abrasive, I would try a very small area at the bottom front (closest to you) and see what the outcome is. I would first put the stopper in the sink and pour in two gallons of vinegar then fill up above where you are having problems with whatever stains with water. Leave it over night and see if this solution has solved your problem. Vinegar is very inexpensive and much easier to replace than a sink. It is amazing how it will dissolve hard water, then you can just pull the plug and get the benefits of vinegar in your water lines also. If that doesn't work then go on with the "hard stuff" Good luck! |
Question: | what is the difference between the Th104/U and the TH106/U |
Answer: | I do not believe this will remove the scratches as you may have damaged the porcelain finish. This product did not scratch my toilet when I used it. |
Question: | Does this unit require batteries or is it hard wired |
Answer: | Hi There! No this is to be used on non granite surfaces. If you have any further questions we'd be happy to help. Please email us at [email protected]. Thanks! |

User questions & answers
Question: | thanks, ktnintl. I am trying to figure out if it will shut OFF if the temp gets above a set point. I want to set ON for 95F and OFF at 130F |
Answer: | I don't know the answer to that question ... the thermostat is available for as little as $28 on eBay. I actually have this thermostat intact with the cover that I was unable to use because of complications with installing my new furnace ... maybe we could work out something here ... |
Question: | The warning about not to use solid state speed control device begs the question. does this mean on the power supply side or power output side or both |
Answer: | We have found a 4 degree difference: if we set it at 74, it will cool to 70. |
Question: | What does it mean "Fan Off Temperature"? Should it be "Fan On Temperature |
Answer: | The are no batteries in mine, not sure why the description says that it requires batteries. It would be better to buy the less expensive heat-only Honeywell CT87K, URL: http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-CT87K-RoundHeat-Manual-Thermostat/dp/B000EANORW/ref=pd_sim_sbs_hi_1 |
Question: | How does the "Firestat" feature work. I'm expecting to hear a thorough answer from the manufacturer |
Answer: | This thermostat provides electronic control of 24VAC heating and cooling systems. You can see in the picture the switches for heat/cool and fan/auto. That's pretty much the definition of HVAC. It's a four-wire and if you see four on your old system to can be extra sure of no problems. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I need to have a Honeywell gateway? This is an additional piece of hardware used by some of the Honeywell thermostats (ex. Prestige |
Answer: | This Thermostat truly Rocks!! - It has a screen lock as well as Security codes for front panel access. It also has security if you want to use WiFi to remotely access it. Setup is a breeze also. I HIGHLY recommend this thermostat. The NEST is an excellent choice as well. |
Question: | Without battery backup, what happens in a power outage? Is there internal memory that keeps the settings and how long, and is thermostat still usable |
Answer: | What's Google home? |
Question: | What happens to the room temperature when the internet is down |
Answer: | I have a 5 year old Lux Thermostat. When we bought a new Rheem this past summer, the technician pulled the batteries out of it saying they were not needed. End result, is every time we have a power outage, the thermostat looses it's programming. it losses it when we change back and forth from heat to cool also. I'd be wary of any advice about removing batteries unless you're sure that it does not affect the thermostat memory. i say this as the A/C is on and it's program is set on 72 degrees. i had it set on 75 and have not attempted to reprogram it since that would be just a temporary fix it resets down to 72 often not sure why. |
Question: | How do I figure out if this will work with my wiring? I read that there might be issues with the electric wires (might be missing one COMMON wire |
Answer: | I just went to Best Buy to play with the RTH9585WF and see what is the difference in the settings. Color options do seem to be slightly different. Both have 7 day programing (four settings per day) plus vacation etc. The literature says the 9585 automatically switches between cool/heat but in 9585 system (MODE) there is only "heat", "cool" and "off". So my guess is the automatic is not a setting you pick. 9560 offers the forth option of automatic and will show heat and cool adjustments on the home page setting on the panel. Other than that I do not see any difference. My guess is the 9585 has a newer chip set but honestly I have no idea. I called Honeywell and the tech could not even tell me the difference other than it's the second generation model. Both work with Alexa and other smart devices and smart hubs. I'm still thinking of returning the 9580 for the 9585 but if I have to switch between heat and cold that is a deal breaker and I kind of like seeing the date when I walk buy. My guess is in a few years Honeywell will over a unit to compete with the Ecobee with something like Alexa built into it. Frankly, I'd purchase the Ecobeen 4 but my wife of 35 years thought the Ecobeen being black and kind of large and the white mounting plate was ugly and after 35 years of marriage I felt like this decision was not worth the fight. |

Answer: | Probably not. This is for a resistive load and the pump motor is an inductive load. I would check with Honeywell to be sure. |
Question: | How is this supposed to mount? It's described as if it is a replacement for a thermostat. That's not my situation |
Answer: | 2 main differences that I see:#1 the wattage is different. for the th106, you have 2000/4000 Watts for (120/240 volts) and the th104 only has 1750/3500 watts. it's not a big deal unless you have requirements on how many or how big of heaters you are controlling. For me, I have 1 medium and 2 small baseboards which totals to 2000 watts on 120 volts.#2 the programming is different. on the th106 you can specify temps for each day of the week-differently, whereas the 104's programming allows for weekend/weekday modes. |
Question: | Is this a double pole thermostat |
Answer: | This unit is wired directly to your 220v 2-wire circuit for the thermostat. This is a line voltage thermostat. |

About Honeywell
Honeywell's roots reach to 1885, when an inventor named Albert Butz patented the furnace regulator and alarm. He formed the Butz Thermo-Electric Regulator Co., Minneapolis, in April, 1886, and soon invented a device he called the "damper flapper” – an ingenious predecessor to the modern thermostat.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you set filter change alert |

Question: | Does this need a C wire or does it run on batteries |
Answer: | No, settings seem to be retained during power outages. |
Question: | Does it have a programmable fan |
Answer: | - “Alexa, set group or thermostat name to X degrees” - “Alexa, increase group or thermostat name by X degrees” - “Alexa, decrease group or thermostat name by X degrees” - “Alexa, what is the group or thermostat name set to?” - “Alexa, what is the temperature of group or thermostat name?” - “Alexa, set Thermostat Name to (Heat/Cool/Auto/Off) Mode” |
Question: | Does this have a hysteresis, or "swing" temp control |
Answer: | I bought a different thermostat and am getting this one now, both requiring a C wire in homes without the wire to power the thermostats (built in 1997 & 2001...both gas furnaces). I bought the following adapter: 8 FT OMNIHIL AC/DC Power Adapter 24V 1A (1000mA) 5.5x2.5mm / 5.5x2.1mm Regulated/UL Listed/FCC Certified (Compatible with Many Models) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NUI2WGY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Ey3OCb2W2AFJX I cut off the connector end and wired it up to R & C & plugged it in. Never had a problem. My (now ex) husband was glad I'm so handy (he was not...LOL!) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use a variable speed control for an exhaust fan with this unit for cooling in the hold mode |
Answer: | LUX WIN 100-005 EVAPORATIVE COOLER THERMOSTAT |
Question: | Can this be plugged into a power strip (or surge protector) instead of a wall outlet |
Answer: | I would be EXTREMELY wary of plugging a heater into a power strip. If you are running something at 1500W that line has to be good. The longer the cord, the more electrical resistance. The more resistance, the more heat (and risk of fire). The more cords that can be faulty, the higher the chance one is.Get a GOOD surge protector, and test and inspect it regularly. Make sure its one with lights that indicate if it is protecting properly. Also it's best to get a new surge protector every 5 years or so because they will inevitably absorb some small surges that wear them out over time. When it comes to devices that can burn your house down you should take electrical safety very, very seriously. |
Question: | Owners manual (Pg 3) states only to use WIN100 with 3-prong (grounded) appliance cords!!! Most space heater cords only have 2 prongs. Experiences |
Answer: | The only bad thing you can do as far as 2 or 3 pronged plugs go, is to remove the third grounding prong on a plug in order to make it work in an ungrounded (2-prong) receptacle or extension cord. Otherwise plugging a 2-pronged device into a 3-pronged outlet is perfectly safe. The 3rd prong is usually connected to the metal chassis of an appliance so that if something inside gets knocked around or wet and ends up energizing the metal chassis - it will cause the circuit to short and hopefully trip the circuit breaker, instead of creating a shock hazard by energizing the other metal parts on the device. Question: | can this be used for outside dog house heat lamp in the winter? I would want it to come on when the temp drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit |
Answer: | That is exactly what I use it for. It's been in the dog house for 2 years now. The chew proof comments are not really valid. You wouldn't want the dog getting the chance to make contact with the heater right? So to solve the situation, youd get some welded fence wire and put a box around the heating element. I put the controller in the same large welded wire box. Dogs can't get to any of it which is the most responsible way to keep it from being broken, chewed, or catching a fire (I keep hay in the box too). |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this have an on-off switch |
Answer: | This is just a simple thermostat that turns on when the temperature reaches the point at which you set it, and stays on until the temperature drops below that set point. |
Question: | Will this unit operate on a 12 volt RV electrical system without the aaa batteries installed? Will the display be readable |
Answer: | This means do not connect a variable speed control to the motor. The motor must run at full speed and only controlled by the thermostat. |
Question: | Can this be used for Gas Fireplace |
Answer: | Come on. At temperature range 60° to120°, you set the "fan on" to cool your whatever. HOWEVER! YOU DO NOT WANT your house fan on if there is a FIRE as it will create a chimney effect and make things exponentially worse so at 183° just before where stuff like wood starts to oxidize and combust (burn), it shuts off so you don't blame (and sue) them because YOU left a romantic candle burning and toasted your bedroom. |
Question: | Are you able to set the min and max temps, like a min of 50 degrees and max of 68 degrees |
Answer: | As the temperature increases in the attic the contact closes and the fan starts. So far mine works fine. |
