13 best garage heaters propane
Propane garage heaters are heating devices that use propane gas as a fuel source to generate warmth within a garage or workshop. These heaters are particularly useful in spaces where a consistent and efficient heat source is required during colder months. Here's what you need to know about propane garage heaters:
Fuel Source: Propane garage heaters use propane gas, which is stored in a tank, as their fuel source. Propane is a clean-burning fuel, making these heaters efficient and environmentally friendly.
Types of Propane Heaters:
- Portable Propane Heaters: These heaters are easy to move around and typically come with wheels for mobility. They are well-suited for smaller garages or workshops.
- Wall-Mounted Propane Heaters: Wall-mounted units are fixed to a wall and are ideal for larger garages or workspaces. They save floor space and provide a consistent source of heat.
Heating Capacity: Propane garage heaters come in various heating capacities, typically measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units). The size of the heater you need depends on the size of your garage and the desired temperature.
Ventilation: Proper ventilation is essential when using propane heaters to ensure the safe release of combustion byproducts like carbon monoxide. Some models come with built-in ventilation systems, while others require adequate garage ventilation.
Safety Features: Propane garage heaters are equipped with safety features such as automatic shut-off in case of overheating or low oxygen levels. It's crucial to follow the manufacturer's safety guidelines when using these heaters.
Ignition Mechanisms: Propane garage heaters can have different ignition mechanisms, including electronic ignition for easy and reliable starting.
Thermostat Control: Many propane heaters come with built-in thermostats that allow you to set and maintain your desired temperature level, ensuring energy efficiency.
Heat Distribution: Some heaters use fans to distribute warm air more evenly throughout the garage, while others rely on radiant heating to warm objects and surfaces directly.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is necessary to keep your propane garage heater in good working condition. This includes cleaning the unit, checking for gas leaks, and replacing any worn-out components.
Cost: The initial cost of a propane garage heater can vary depending on its size and features. Additionally, you'll need to factor in the cost of propane fuel, which can fluctuate based on market prices.
Propane garage heaters are an excellent choice for providing efficient and reliable heat in areas where other heating sources may be impractical or expensive to install. When selecting a propane garage heater, consider your specific heating needs, the size of your garage, and any safety requirements to choose the right unit for your space.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this unit be installed through a cut out in the celing so it points down towards the floor while having the majority of the unit in the attic |
Answer: | Highly unlikely. The louvers on the front that direct air flow have maybe 45 degrees of downward angle. This just seems like a bad idea |
Question: | does it smell when running |
Answer: | not after initial burn period .Very quiet compared to my last heater ,does not smell . |
Question: | Can it run on a propane tank for a gas grill |
Answer: | This heater can run on a gas grill propane tank. Make sure the propane conversation kit has been installed and then you'll need to use a grill hose that has the regulator on it. Then you'll have to change the fitting after the regulator. |
Question: | One description says heats 700 sq ft another says 1250. Which is it |
Answer: | It heats my 900 sq. ft garage nicely. |

User questions & answers
Question: | how long is the power cord |
Answer: | Yes, it can be used in a blind, tree stand, etc. |
Question: | How far away does the heat reach |
Answer: | Hi, The unit has both options, natural or propane. |
Question: | Would it be safe in a greenhouse and is there a thermostat |
Answer: | On top of the burner for cooking or covering? Or on all four sides of the burning unit as a "wind guard"? I would not recommend putting any type of glass over the top of the burning unit or using it for any type of cooking except for marshmallows. However, if you are talking about a "wind guard" (made from tempered glass) then, yes it could help as I have found that the flames tend to jump around a bit from the wind. To fit inside the lip you will need one a bit smaller than the opening (11.5 X 11.5). The smallest I have seen is a 14" X 14" one and it's a bit pricey. Good luck. https://www.amazon.com/Sunbury-Glass-Square-Accessory-Shield/dp/B087JCQ1H3/ref=sr_1_17?crid=1UQG0BBPE3PNV&dchild=1&keywords=fire+pit+glass+wind+guard+square&qid=1595452168&s=lawn-garden&sprefix=fire+pit+glass%2Clawngarden%2C237&sr=1-17 |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are you able to change the temp using google home? How do you get google home to tell you the current temp in F |
Answer: | Hello again! Thanks for being patient. Google home can now operate in Fahrenheit. To do this, please unlink Smart Life from Google Home. Then confirm that your heater is displaying the temperature in Fahrenheit. Once you have your heater settings on Fahrenheit, relink Smart Life to Google Home. Now you will be able to operate your heater with Google home in Fahrenheit. If you want to change the settings back to Celcius, you will need to unlink Smart Life from Google Home, set your heater to Celsius, and relink. Thank you, EnergyWise Solutions |
Question: | Does this heater allow you to start at a specific time? For example, start at 6am with plans to wake up at 7am |
Answer: | Using the SmartLife app I schedule my heater to start at 6AM, 30 minutes before I wake up. This function has worked great for us |
Question: | How do I know if this is 'energy efficient' as the description claims |
Answer: | All electrical resistance heaters convert 100% of the energy they use to heat. The efficiency question comes in, as Heat Storm says, when you ask where is the heat going (fan blows it into the room where you are - so good) and does it create too much heat (thermostat shuts it off when the air is warm enough - good). The answer from Amazon Customer on December 7, 2020 is incorrect. Every last watt will become heat in the room, even the light from the glowing element will become heat in the room unless you point the heater out an open window - don't do that, and you're all set. |
Question: | Is there an automatic shut-off feature after a certain number of hours of operation |
Answer: | Mine NEVER SHUT OFF. Even setting the timer for 8 hours it never would shut off. They only way to turn it off is to unplug it. But honestly, it doesn’t heat anything so I don’t think there’s any harm except to your pocketbook if it runs all day. It’s also suppose to with over WiFi from anywhere in the world however the app crashes upon startup so there is no WiFi. Please look elsewhere. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I store the smaller, 1lb propane tanks on my terrace porch, possibly in a box, overall? in cold winters and hot summers |
Answer: | For maximum safety, my recommendation is to store propane containers in a weather protected location, such as garage or shed with some natural ventilation. Propane is a highly flammable liquified petroleum gas that vaporizes and expands many-fold very quickly if released to atmospheric pressure, and will form a highly explosive mixture if released in a confined space without outside ventilation. If then ignited by a small spark such as a light switch, the resulting explosion may be catastrophic. There are on-line photos of boats that have exploded from propane leaks in the confined space of a boat cabin with catastrophic results including death of occupants. The cabin top and sides have literally been blown to pieces in such cases. New, sealed bottles of 1 lb size are reasonably safe, but once opened or partly used it is best to store away from occupied spaces. Although the probability is low, the consequences of failure are unacceptable. 20 lb propane containers should never be stored indoors. Play it extra safe and store propane bottles in a garage or outdoor shed. BJG (PE, ichemical engineer, inactive, retired) |
Question: | can i hook a large propane tank to his |
Answer: | Yes, any size propane tank can be a source for it when plumbed correctly. The simplest way to go is using the F273704 hose directly off most tanks. That hose needs nothing else and goes direct from the tank to the heater. This model heater only accepts high pressure gas thru the "disposable tank" connection, so other hoses with that connection can be used as well as the "filter" F273699. The "filter" is to take out oils coming from most rubbers in hoses where the high pressure "squeezes" the oil out, but the 704 hose is made "oil-free" to avoid that issue. FYI I tried running this off a regulated low pressure source, but with it on "high" the glow was like "low" setting normally (showing a lack of gas coming thru). So if you have a low pressure source, the "Big Buddy" models have a connection point for such thru a quick disconnect using hoses like F271802 or F271803, but not this model (this one needs high pressure gas to get enough thru it's disposable tank port). |
Question: | How long with the heater run on low with a propane small cannister |
Answer: | Best guess is 4-5 hours on low. I sat in a hunting blind for 2.5 hours and the 1lb propane canister was about half empty. |
Question: | Does anyone know or understand how is it this type of propane heater can be used indoors without causing carbon dioxide poisoning |
Answer: | As soon as the weather gets cold, I put my Big Buddy Heater on a stand & use a Mr. Heater 12' hose with regulator running to a 20lb. tank in living room. I use the hose with the low pressure regulator on it & hook it up to the quick connect fitting. I have 2 20lb tanks in mint condition, and rotate them as needed. This will be my 7th winter using it. Old windows & doors let air in and I have a carbon monoxide alarm near by. Also use a leak detector to check all connections after hooking up a full tank. If it's really cold, I'll start it on high for a short time, then run it on medium & it keeps living & dining room warm. Cuts my oil bill down greatly. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work on a single 20 amp breaker |
Answer: | No. The bulbs are very hot and would likely shatter if splashed. You can have them in a bathroom outside the shower or tub where they'd shine on you while your're toweling off, but not directly over the ub. |
Question: | will this heater work with a wall mount thermostat and if so which one |
Answer: | No. A tag inside the unit says "max 250W" The red infrared 250w bulbs may give off more heat than the white bulbs. |
Question: | What does the 2500- 5000 watt mean? Which is it? And is this unit noisy when blowing? thank you |
Answer: | I would not recommend installing this anywhere that a drop of water could splash or spray on the hot bulbs which are exposed. better to install outside of the shower enclosure, in an area that remains dry and protected from overspray. |
Question: | What has the increase to your electricity bill been like |
Answer: | Yes, in fact it is wired for that and the instructions describe how to wire it both ways: with 2 heat lamps (controlled by one switch), or with one heat and one illumination lamp (using two separate switches). It has a tiny fan and that is designed to be wired so it runs when the heat lamp (either 1 or 2) is on. |

User questions & answers
Question: | if it has a thermostat, what temperature is it shutting off? I have a different fire place with a 73 degree shut off manufacturing setting, not enought |
Answer: | I asked the manufacturer for the thermostate info. It has a knob on top from 1-5. 1-60.8°f 2-75.2°f 3-89.6°f 4-104°f 5-118.4°f He also said that they could vary slightly from heater to heater. |
Question: | I don't see a pic or anything that shows where/how the fan mounts. Does anyone know |
Answer: | The fan will mount on the back of the heater. There is a punch out that will be removed and the fan will go in it's place. |
Question: | Would this heater work in a 2 car garage |
Answer: | In short yes. we have this on the first floor of our house. it is not yet winter, but this is a 30,000 BTU heater; it heats the entire house fast - like 20 mins upstairs and down. I would say the same for a two car garage. I plan on moving this unit to the basement shop which is exposed to ground level in the back and unheated; basically a 1 car garage back there and I expect this to out perform. I will add one thing: this is the blue flame unit. I have had shop heaters before and prefer the radiant heaters (of which Mr Heater makes one just like this) - they have the clay looking elements in them that glow red/orange; those heaters will heat things in the space and then those items give off the heat. I used to aim one at my roll away tool box. in an area where you might have a lot of space up above, such as a loft the radiant version of this heater may be better as it will heat the items it is near with less heated air floating up. either way, this is a safe bet. |
Question: | Does the mhvfb30ngt unit have an automatic igniter to maintain temperature or do you to to push an igniter switch to start it each time |
Answer: | It has a pilot lit that will stay lit at all times, unless you turn the dial to the Off position. The heater will start up when the thermostat dial settings determines that it's time to turn the heater on. |
Question: | I stripped the threads on the heater, how can i fix this |
Answer: | You can tap it out if you have a tap and die set, otherwise you will have to order new parts |
Question: | Want 30000 Btu radiant heater with blower |
Answer: | The 30000 BTU heater will be the model number MHVFRD30LPT. Click on link provided to view the heater. https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Heater-Corporation-Radiant-MHVFRD30LPT/dp/B01DPZ56KU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1514918538&sr=8-1&keywords=MHVFRD30LPT |
Question: | Will this work with a 20 pound tank |
Answer: | Yes, but you will need to add a regulator between the heater and the 20 pound tank for safety |
Question: | So, it has no thermostat but output is variable? How does this work |
Answer: | It does NOT have a thermostat, settings are either high or low. It will NOT turn on and off on it's own when reaching certain temperatures, it even says its NOT thermostat controlled in the manual. |

Radiant Vent Free Heaters
Our Vent Free heaters need no external power, great for power outages and applications with no electricity. They can be mounted to the wall with the supplied bracket or on the floor with the supplied feet.
Most common uses are rooms that don’t warm well so you can adjust the temperature level in them without having to affect the rest of the home.
There are two types of vent free heaters, blue flame (or convection heat) and Infrared (or radiant heat). The difference in these types of heat are how the warm.
The Infrared heater warms objects. It doesn’t warm the air like a Blue Flame. It can be put in an area with objects which the heater will heat and then the object will heat the air. Blue Flame warms the air, infrared warms objects, which heat the air.
Note: Units cannot be converted from Propane to Natural Gas and vice versa. They are not designed to be a primary source of heat, as they are designed to work with a furnace.
Blue Flame Vent Free Heaters
Our Vent Free heaters need no external power, great for power outages and applications with no electricity. They can be mounted to the wall with the supplied bracket or on the floor with the supplied feet.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be converted to natural gas |
Answer: | China where else they own us |
Question: | Can you use a high pressure hose with this |
Answer: | I have the rack that you use 2x4s to make any length that you want. With this kind of rack I have racks that are 8' 9' and 10'. These kind of racks hold a lot of wood some as high as 5' high. I like the convience of making a rack to what ever size I want. |
Question: | Does this unit contain a room blower to move the radiated heat |
Answer: | I have my wood rack filled just like the one in the photo. The tubes are heavy duty about 1" outside diameter. I would have to cut one to see how thick they are inside, but they do not bend or flex when handled. I am happy with mine. It works as advertised. |
Question: | Does it use a battery-powered starter or peizoelectric click-starter |
Answer: | I got this last month and it did not have a cover. There's another version of this on Amazon for $10 more that does include a cover. |
