12 best underlayment plywoods
Underlayment plywood, often simply referred to as underlayment, is a crucial building material used in the construction and installation of various types of flooring. It plays a significant role in providing support, stability, and a smooth surface for the final flooring material. Here's what you should know about underlayment plywood:
Purpose and Function: Underlayment plywood serves as a substrate or foundation for finished flooring materials, such as hardwood, laminate, vinyl, tile, and carpet. Its primary functions include:
Leveling: Underlayment helps level out uneven subfloors, creating a flat and smooth surface for flooring installation.
Stability: It adds stability and strength to the floor, reducing flex and minimizing the risk of the final flooring material cracking or warping.
Moisture Barrier: In some cases, underlayment plywood may have moisture-resistant properties, acting as a barrier to protect the flooring from moisture damage.
Types of Underlayment Plywood: There are several types of underlayment plywood available, each designed for specific flooring applications:
Plywood: Standard plywood, often in 1/4-inch or 1/2-inch thickness, is commonly used as underlayment for various types of flooring. It provides a solid and stable surface.
Oriented Strand Board (OSB): OSB is another option for underlayment. It's made from pressed wood strands and is often used in subfloor applications.
Cement Backer Board: For tile and stone flooring installations, cement backer board is a popular choice. It is resistant to moisture and provides a solid surface for tile adhesion.
Plywood with Vapor Barrier: Some underlayment plywood products come with an integrated vapor barrier, which helps prevent moisture from seeping into the flooring material.
Installation: Proper installation of underlayment plywood is crucial for the success of your flooring project. The plywood sheets are typically fastened to the subfloor using screws or nails, with seams staggered to avoid weak spots. The edges are often left slightly apart to allow for expansion.
Moisture Considerations: Depending on the flooring type and location, moisture can be a significant concern. In areas prone to moisture, such as basements or bathrooms, it's essential to choose underlayment plywood with moisture-resistant properties or to use additional moisture barriers.
Sound Insulation: Underlayment can also provide sound insulation benefits by reducing the transmission of sound between floors in multi-story buildings.
Compatibility: It's essential to choose the appropriate type and thickness of underlayment plywood based on the flooring material you plan to install and the conditions of the subfloor.
In summary, underlayment plywood is a vital component in the construction and installation of various types of flooring. It ensures a stable, level, and moisture-resistant surface for your final flooring material, contributing to the durability and longevity of your floors. Proper selection and installation of underlayment are crucial for the success of your flooring project.

User questions & answers
Question: | How flexible ? Could a 2 inch by 24 be twisted permanently 90 degrees |
Answer: | I don’t think so, this is an adhesive for laying vinyl flooring. I would think your particle board would separate if the flooring is glued to it. Plywood subfloors or concrete are better to apply this adhesive. |
Question: | Is this actual wood or a facsimile |
Answer: | I didn’t try it on cork. However it works great on press wood and plywood. |
Question: | How many sheets per pack |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | You say it's frequently bought with Plywood Sheet-12"X12"X1/8" and 12 x 12 Inches Acrylic Plexiglass Sheet, Clear. What would you make out of that |
Answer: | It was enough to do a 165square foot area. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it smell chemicals?/ Thanks |
Answer: | It depends on what type of floor you are laying. For floating floors such as click laminate or hardwood, it does not need to be glued. Tape the seams with duct tape and lay your floor. If you are glueing down hardwood, the cork needs to be glued to the subfloor. |
Question: | Can i lay this on top of a hard wood floor and then put padding and carpeting over it to soundproof my floor to make it quiet for my neighbor below |
Answer: | You can use either. Cork will transmit less noise. If the laminate is floating, you don't have to glue down the cork, just tape the seems. If you are gluing down the laminate, you would have to glue down the cork first. In either case, the 1/4" plywood would be stapled down with a pneumatic stapler (or screwed, but that is a lot of work). Staples every 4-5" in the body of the plywood, every 2" around the edge. This is assuming that you have a plywood subfloor, not concrete. |
Question: | Would this help dampen the sound of a treadmill? I live in a 2nd floor apartment |
Answer: | Cork is an outstanding insulator and can be used under the radiant heat elements - typically on concrete. I have radiant heat floors in the bathrooms. I did not use cork underlayment however because I live in Florida and did not have to concern my self too much with the time to heat a floor. I did talk with the manufactuer (Warm Touch) and they suggested underlayment (like Cork) under radiant heat if you are in climates where it gets cold. It allows the floor to heat quicker and reduce heat losses into the subflooring. I used this product under all my wood floors - it is awesome. Cork is a sustainable product, moisture resistant and bugs do not like it. |
Question: | We will be installing strand bamboo over our concrete slab. Is this cork underlayment all we need or should we install a moisture barrier too |
Answer: | It's 4 ft x 50 ft |
- Steico's high performance sound control and acoustic improving properties noticeably increase room comfort
- US certified after passing the strictest acoustic tests (6” concrete slab without ceiling assembly) which guarantees best sound proofing
- 100% natural, eco friendly sound proof padding (no poisonous emissions, no VOC, no glue, recyclable) which enhances safety and value of the property
- High compression strength and "Click-lock protection" ensures that floor will not squeak, prevents "springy" effect when walking
- 'Vapor Open'' technology prevents conditions for mold growth under the floor, works as a natural microclimate regulator
User questions & answers
Question: | Hello, is this a suitable underlayment for stick-on vinyl tiles that are 1.2mm thick |
Answer: | No...this underlayment is a fiberboard and will have poor adherence to anything that has to stick to it. I used seam tape with my installation and the tape would easily loose adhesion due to the fibers dislodging from the underlayment and accumulating on the sticky surface of the tape. Otherwise, I am well pleased with products performance for my floating lvp floor. |
Question: | I need 3mm in addition to the 1/4 inch that the Steico underlayment provides. Can I use a 3mm foam vapor barrier underneath to make up the difference |
Answer: | The thicker the layers, the spongier they get. The more movement, the less wear. I think layer them would be a mistake. |
Question: | I'll be installing this on a concrete slab and want to know if I can use it in a bathroom underneath tile or marble floors |
Answer: | We recommend using our Underlayment under the floating floors. In the bathrooms, you can use it in places where there is no direct water exposure to the finishing surface. Our clients do install STEICO Underlayment under tile but we have not accumulated enough experience yet to recommend using it this way. |
Question: | I see that taping is an option for this flooring but is it better for the microclimate to not tape it |
Answer: | Hello! Since the underlayment is designed as Water Vapor system, it has an ability to "breathe" no matter if tape is there or not (air is going through all the surface). Tape might be used on joints if desired to fix the Underlay and prevent moving while installing, tape could be used on full length of joints, by small pieces or could be not used at all. |

Benefit from the properties of the natural material
Fibers are bound together by “Lignin”, which is a wood resin that is secreted in the process of milling wood and acts as a binding agent of the wood fibers; a natural glue. This substance is responsible for the durability and sturdiness of the boards.
In order to produce a high quality product made out of wood fibers, a very persice proportion of Lignin and length of the fibers is required. Only Pine and Spruce are suitable to be utilized in the production of these products.
Quality sound control
Meet the Building code with STEICO soundproof. The high density of the wood fiber natural insulation means that it is also very effective at reducing both airborne sound like talking, music, traffic noise, and impact sound such as footstep, moving furniture, rain noise through walls, floors, etc.
High compression strength
Ability to hold pressure and not being "foamy", ensures that floor would not squeak at the joints. Underlayment should be solid and flexible rather than soft and elastic. It prevents "floating" and "springy" effect when walking, keeps the floors hard and sturdy under your feet. It also protects locks from breaking and prolongs life of your wood floor.
Compensates on minor unevenness in the concrete
Being somewhat flexible, but not soft, the Underlayment “coats” the bulges in the concrete on it’s bottom layer, remaining hard and sturdy on it’s top. Speed and ease up your installation process.
Installation that meets your needs
Implement solutions that work best for you. May be installed in two or more layers to raise up the level (if needed) or used as an additional sound insulation for walls or ceiling. Ideal for use with underfloor radiant heating systems.
Can be used under your carpet
Cushioning, acoustic and thermal insulation for carpets and linoleum floors!
Even more acoustic insulation!
Better acoustic and sound insulation with Delta IIC 25!
For quick and easy subfloor height elevation
Great alternative for long drying and complicated "wet" leveling processes!
Incredible sound insulating properties and air quality regulation
The wood fibers, like natural hair and wool, are hollow inside, which allows the internal capillaries to conduct water and air through the fibers. This process is responsible for the incredible heat and sound insulating properties of wood fiber materials as well as Water Vapor Open feature. it is a "breathable material" that allows airflow to circulate.
It can retain moisture to up to 20%-25% of their mass. While the retention of moisture occurs, the fibrous material doesn't lose its thermo-physical properties and sound insulating qualities throughout the process.
It can adapt to changing moisture levels in the air in the space where it is installed. It also works as a natural indoor microclimate regulator in those spaces, due to its capability to absorbs excess moisture from the air, then releases it back when the air is dry. This process minimizes the possibility of stale smells by preventing conditions for mold and mildew growth under the flooring surfaces.

User questions & answers
Question: | What's the difference between this and the Quietwalk LV |
Answer: | Yes, we used this on concrete under laminate flooring. |
Question: | What is the stc and hc rating |
Answer: | If you're putting the laminate on a slab, I would use this as an additional barrier against moisture. Most laminate with the installed padding do not require underlayment. |
Question: | Can i used this if its nail down |
Answer: | I have used this product over concrete and also over plywood and it has worked as intended however I used laminate over it never hardwood. For hardwood flooring I use a thicker material than this. |
Question: | how thick is this underlayment |
Answer: | If my memory serves me, the 40 inches wide is 36 inches of foam with a four inch clear plastic tab that sticks to the previous layer. The package I purchased was to fit 250 sq.ft, and it was a little short of 250. Estimate about 220 sq ft., But I skipped the closet so it worked fine. I used some leftover foam that I had. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What would you recommend I use to cut this |
Answer: | I would place the 2inch by 24 inch into water for a short period and then allow to set at room temp for a couple of days, allow the piece to warp. You should easily be to bend to 90 degrees quite easily thereafter. However, a length of 24 inches can most certainly be bent to 90 degrees without warping if you are going to secure the ends tightly by the use of strong clamps. |

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT THIS PRODUCT: This uncoupling membrane has been designed and manufactured by Gauti, not Schluter. If you specifically require Schluter uncoupling membranes, please do not order this product. Thank you.
- PREVENTS TILE CRACKS: Gauti Uncoupling Membrane has an open rib structure which allows for in-plane movement that effectively neutralizes the differential movement stresses between flooring and tiles. This completely eliminates a major cause of cracking and delamination on the tiled surface.
- WATERPROOFING: The polyethylene composition of the Gauti Uncoupling membrane provides reliable waterproofing for indoor and outdoor applications. It protects the flooring from any moisture penetrating through the tiling surface.
- LOAD DISTRIBUTION: The membrane provides a virtually incompressible layer within the tile assembly. The advantages of uncoupling are achieved without sacrificing point load distribution capabilities. The ability of the Gauti Uncoupling Membrane to support and distribute heavy loads while preserving the integrity of the tiled surface has been verified through extensive ANSI 108.10 compliant testing.
- VAPOR MANAGEMENT: Excess moisture and vapor between the underside of the Uncoupling Membrane and the flooring is allowed to escape through the configured channels on the underside of the membrane. This prevents moisture and vapor from causing damage to the tiling layer above the membrane.
- EASY INSTALLATION: Cut the Gauti membrane to size if required, then embed the anchoring fleece (which is laminated to the underside of the membrane) into an adhesive so that the entire surface is strongly bonded. Thinset mortar and laminate tape are recommended for a moisture sealed and crack-proof finish.
User questions & answers
Question: | Does anyone what size and shape trowel should be used for installation |
Answer: | When placed on a solid foundation, columns or pillars can support tremendous loads. The same physical principle applies to DITRA installations. Column-like mortar structures are formed in the cutback cavities of the matting. Loads are transferred from the tile covering through these column-like mortar structures to the substrate. Since the matting is virtually incompressible within the tile assembly, the advantages of uncoupling are achieved without sacrificing point load distribution capabilities. The ability of DITRA installations to support and distribute heavy loads while preserving the integrity of the tiled surface has been verified through extensive laboratory and field testing, including applications exposed to vehicular traffic. - Schluter Systems |

User questions & answers
Question: | Dos this allow for air to pass through;air exchange of any kind |
Answer: | I’m not sure I clearly understand your question. Even though the packaging has an exterior paper packaging and an interior plastic lining, I would always keep this product in a dry environment (i.e., in the garage elevated off the floor). Do not have it susceptible to rain or moisture. There could be a chance of moisture entering into the packaging and reacting to the contents. Each of the bags I received had a slight opening where some of the contents could escape. |
Question: | Is this 2mm thick |
Answer: | Mine came in a cardboard box |
Question: | So is this good for 900 Sq ft |
Answer: | Not easily, it's slightly easier to sand / file / grind than concrete. I was able to knock off the high spots with a car body file but I pretty much ruined the file in the process. I got this product in hopes of having long enough working time to get it to level decently in a ~400 sq ft room. No luck in that regard. This product (ES = Extended Set), which is difficult to find, is maybe slightly slower curing than the RS (= Rapid Set) version, which is easy to find. For all I know ES and RS are the exact same product, like Duff Premium and Duff Select. Your best bet to slow this stuff down is to use really cold mix water. Slow curing is the key to having enough time to trowel a feather edge. Even then, it's feathered only good enough to cover with ceramic tile or carpet, not vinyl or any other conformal floor covering. |
Question: | Approximatly how many square feet will one bag cover |
Answer: | You could honestly use anything from a handsaw, a jigsaw, bandsaw. Whatever you’d use to cut most wood. It’s only a 1/4” inch birch so it’s not super hard to get through. |
Question: | Is it able to get wet |
Answer: | Yes, most stains work on this. |
Question: | when i order this, does the content come hidden inside a package or does the package show what is inside |
Answer: | It is B grade on the face side, meaning no patches but allows for small knots. It is BB grade on the other side, meaning it allows for possible football patches. Generally speaking, on a 5'x5' sheet, it allows for 4-6 football patches, since we cut the 5'x5' into 25 1'x1'(12"x12") pieces, chances that you get no patches on both sides are high. |
Question: | Are you able to sand this to feather the edges into the plywood for a smooth transition |
Answer: | As far as we know, 6mm is too thick for Cricut. We have a 1/16" (1.5mm) plywood available on Amazon that would work. |

BronzeStep 2-in-1 Underlayment, Moisture Control + Friction Resistance + Cushion
CalFlor's BronzeStep 2-in-1 underlayment is suitable for all standard laminate and engineered glue-less floors. This underlayment is designed for use on wood and concrete subfloors and performs well over radiant heat floors. BronzeStep smooths out minor subfloor imperfections while providing excellent moisture resistance, through the laminated moisture barrier attached to both sides of the foam.
A Double Moisture Blocking System
BronzeStep Folding Underlayment is an expanded polyethylene (EPE) foam with a double film moisture barrier. EPE foams by themselves inhibit moisture, and those with added film normally meet the requirements for floated flooring. But CalFlor adds an additional barrier film - one on each side - because in your home you cannot be too safe or too protective against flooring’s #1 enemy: moisture.
Hints & Tips
- To preserve the moisture barrier properties of the underlayment, we suggest you lay out BronzeStep only one row ahead of your flooring installation.
- If you or other tradespeople have to walk repeatedly over the underlayment, cut some of the BronzeStep into walkways and lay them on top of the underlayment to protect it.
- If the underlayment is moving around on you, place some unopened cartons of flooring in strategic places to hold the foam in place. Never staple BronzeStep to the subfloor.
- To save you time and work, run BronzeStep through doorways and trim it later (prior to installing trims and transitions).
Get Some Packing Tape!
- Wherever there is a cut seam (like where the ends meet), tape and seal the seam with good packing or duct tape.
- Any areas where the tape, the flap or the surface have been cut or damaged, use packing or duct tape to reseal the underlayment.
- Be sure to connect rows and ends together evenly so that the foam never overlaps and there are no wide gaps.
Instructions
- Calculate and purchase enough BronzeStep underlayment to allow for about 5% loss due to cutting.
- Following the flooring manufacturer’s instructions, prepare the subfloor and be sure to repair any damaged sections. Sweep, vacuum, and remove all debris on the subfloor.
- Start against the same wall of the room that you will be starting the flooring installation. Unroll BronzeStep underlayment with the tape side (outside) up and the overlap flap side against the wall. Run the 3” flap up the wall to be trimmed after the flooring is installed.
- Unroll and lay out the second row beside the first with the flap overlapping the first row. Pull the protective liner off the tape and firmly press the flap onto the previous row’s tape with no folds or wrinkles.
- Cut as needed to fill the room. Wherever there is a cut seam (like where the ends meet), tape and seal the seam with good packing or duct tape.
