There is also a big difference in cost with leather ones running about $40 for Youth and 75-80 for HS/collegiate size |

| Answer: | From what I can tell on the Wilson site:http://www.downtownathletic.com/pdfs/catalogs/wilson/2013-Wilson-Fall.pdf, the 1003 is the "Official Collegiate Pattern" and the 1004 is the "Official Pro Pattern." I think that means the 1003 is just slightly smaller but still within the specs of a collegiate ball. Both are approved for NCAA and NFHS use. I'm guessing the 1003 is used more in high school ball.
