12 best lacrosse heads
Lacrosse heads are a crucial component of a lacrosse stick, which is used by players in the sport of lacrosse. These heads play a significant role in ball control, passing, and shooting accuracy. Here is what you should know about lacrosse heads:
Construction: Lacrosse heads are typically made of a combination of materials, including plastic, rubber, and sometimes mesh or string. The head attaches to the shaft of the lacrosse stick and holds the mesh or strings that form the pocket where the ball is cradled.
Shape and Design: Lacrosse heads come in various shapes and sizes, and their design can significantly impact a player's performance. The head's design affects how a player can catch, pass, and shoot the ball. Offensive and defensive players may prefer different head shapes to suit their playing style.
Position-Specific Heads: In lacrosse, there are specific types of heads designed for different positions, such as attack, midfield, and defense. Attackers often prefer heads with narrow throats for better ball control and shooting accuracy, while defensive players may opt for wider heads to make it easier to catch passes and intercept shots.
Stringing: The way a lacrosse head is strung, including the pattern and tension of the strings, has a significant impact on a player's ability to control the ball. Players often customize the stringing to suit their preferences and playing style.
NCAA and NFHS Regulations: Lacrosse heads must meet specific regulations set by organizations like the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) and NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations). These regulations dictate the dimensions and specifications of lacrosse heads to ensure fairness and safety in the sport.
Durability: Lacrosse heads need to be durable to withstand the physical nature of the game. They should be able to endure stick checks, ground ball battles, and the occasional impact with the goalposts.
Brands and Models: Various lacrosse equipment manufacturers produce a wide range of lacrosse heads, each with its own unique features and characteristics. Some popular lacrosse head brands include Warrior, STX, Brine, Maverik, and StringKing, among others.
Pocket Types: Lacrosse heads can have different types of pockets, including traditional stringing and mesh pockets. Mesh pockets have become increasingly popular due to their consistency and ease of maintenance.
Maintenance: Proper maintenance of a lacrosse head is essential to ensure its longevity and performance. Players should regularly check and adjust the strings, clean the pocket, and keep the head in good condition.
Customization: Many lacrosse players like to personalize their heads with team colors, graphics, or decals. Customization options are available to allow players to express their individuality.
In summary, lacrosse heads are vital components of lacrosse sticks, and their design, construction, and stringing play significant roles in a player's ability to control and manipulate the ball. Players often choose heads based on their position and playing style, and there are various options available from different manufacturers to suit individual preferences.
