12 best softball radars
Softball radars are specialized devices used in the sport of softball, particularly for training and improving pitching skills. These radars are designed to measure the speed of a softball as it is pitched by a player. They play a crucial role in helping pitchers and coaches assess and refine their pitching techniques.
Here are some key points about softball radars:
Speed Measurement: Softball radars primarily measure the speed of a pitched softball. The speed is typically displayed in miles per hour (MPH) or kilometers per hour (KPH). Knowing the pitch speed is essential for pitchers to track their progress and make necessary adjustments to their technique.
Training Tool: Softball radars serve as valuable training tools for pitchers of all skill levels. Beginners can use them to develop consistent throwing mechanics, while advanced players can fine-tune their pitches to maximize accuracy and speed.
Instant Feedback: One of the significant advantages of using softball radars is the instant feedback they provide. Pitchers can immediately see the speed of their pitches after each throw, allowing them to make real-time adjustments and improvements.
Coaching Aid: Coaches use softball radars to evaluate their players' performance and identify areas for improvement. They can track pitch speeds over time and provide tailored guidance to help pitchers reach their full potential.
Portable and User-Friendly: Many softball radars are compact and easy to set up, making them suitable for both practice sessions on the field and indoor training facilities. Some models are handheld, while others can be mounted on tripods for hands-free operation.
Data Recording: Some advanced softball radars can record and store pitch speed data for later analysis. This feature can be beneficial for coaches and players who want to track progress over extended periods or during games.
Radar Gun vs. Doppler Radar: Softball radars can use either radar gun technology or Doppler radar technology. Radar guns are commonly used for measuring pitch speed and provide accurate results. Doppler radar systems are more sophisticated and can offer additional data, such as the trajectory and spin rate of the ball.
Pricing: The cost of softball radars can vary widely, depending on their features and capabilities. Basic radar guns can be relatively affordable, while more advanced Doppler radar systems may be more expensive.
In summary, softball radars are essential tools for pitchers and coaches to assess and enhance pitching performance. They provide instant feedback on pitch speed, helping players refine their techniques and coaches guide their athletes to success in the sport of softball.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a bluetooth model ideal for vehicles? I want to overlay vehicle speeds on ipad video. Thanks for help |
Answer: | Currently we do not have any models of Pocket Radar brand products that work for measuring speeds of vehicles and also have Bluetooth capabilities. Many people use our Classic model and simply hold the radar up in front of the iPad camera so you can see the radar in the frame with the vehicle. If you have any questions about any of our Pocket Radar brand products please give us a call on our toll-free support line at 888.381.2672 weekdays from 9 AM to 5 PM Pacific time. Thanks, Chris Stewart / President, Pocket Radar Inc. |
Question: | Will this clock bat speed or racquet head speed when not using a ball |
Answer: | This is a good question. Radar guns that are designed to measure ball speeds will not work for measuring swing speeds on things like bats and racquets. This is because the radar is designed to measure things moving in a straight line that is in-line with the radar beam. Radar guns do not work off at an angle. Since a bat or racquet swings through a large arc of different angles you cannot get a consistent and accurate reading of swing speed. There are other devices available to measure swing speed, but they cannot measure ball exit speed. The speed of the ball as it leaves the bat or the racquet is the only direct measure of the power of a hit. The Ball Coach radar is specifically designed to measure the exit velocity right off the bat or racquet. If you have any specific questions feel free to contact us on our toll free number at 888.381.2672 or e-mail at [email protected] Stewart, President / Pocket Radar, Inc. |
Question: | I read on here the classic model is better for vehicles than the ball coach.why? continuous on and max speed functions seem beneficial to traffic also |
Answer: | Thanks for the question. This is a very important issue. The technology on the inside of these two different models of Pocket Radar products is designed very differently. A baseball is only in flight for about 1/2 second and slows down by about 8 MPH due to air resistance. A tennis ball slows down by over 20 MPH form the racket to the bounce. In sports you want to know the fastest speed, which is right at the release point. To do this, the Ball Coach radar makes continuous measurements at a rate of 50 times a second and is looking for an object that is slowing down. Once it identifies a ball or puck in flight it tracks the speed and goes back to the beginning of the sequence and displays the fastest speed right at the release point. This is why it is more accurate than other radar guns on ball speeds. This tracking method is great for balls but not for cars which behave very differently. The Classic model measures speeds very differently. It is designed for things that are in motion for several seconds or longer that could be speeding up or slowing down. When you TAP the red button you get an instantaneous speed reading right at that point, this is not the best for ball speeds because of the rapid slow down. When you hold the Red button down on the Classic model it displays a new speed measurement every 3/4 of a second. This allows you to record the acceleration of a runner over a 7.5 second period using the 10 deep recall memory. Since it only stores the last 10 readings and those will almost always be from the same vehicle, the Continuous-On function is not as useful on a vehicle. So we kept the cost down on the Classic model by not adding that feature. We have intentionally designed different models for different measurement applications to make the products very easy to use and more affordable than trying to have everything included in one model. The important thing is to make sure you buy the right model for the right measurement need. If you ever have any questions about any radar applications please give me a call on our toll-free support line at 888.381.2672 work days from 9 AM to 5 PM Pacific Time. Question: | What is the difference between this radar gun and the pocket radar hand-held radar gun with a price of |
Answer: | Thank you for the question. This is a very important issue. There is a huge difference in the way these two radars make a speed measurement. The Ball Coach radar adds a lot more technology specifically designed to track a ball in flight and always gets the fastest speed of a ball or puck in motion. This allows you to consistently get the fastest ball speed right at the release point. The Ball Coach radar is also the only radar gun specifically designed to get the ball exit speed right off the bat, which is the only direct measure of the power of a hit. The problem is that any ball in flight slows down due to air resistance. For instance, a baseball pitch is only in the air for about 1/2 second and it slows down by 8 MPH from the pitcher to the catcher. A tennis ball will slow down by over 20 MPH from the racket to the bounce. The Pocket Radar Classic is not designed to track a ball in flight. It is a general-purpose radar that has 2 modes. When you TAP the button quickly, like the space-bar on a computer it takes an instantaneous speed measurement at one point, when you hold the button down it will make repeating measurements every 3/4 of a second. To use the Classic model for ball sports you need to be precise with when you TAP the button, otherwise it will not get the fastest speed right at the release point. For baseball or softball, you need to carefully time the triggering so that you TAP the button just as the pitcher is planting their front foot. You do NOT want to hold the red button down, as this will not get the right timing. Some people struggle with the timing to use this radar in baseball. The Ball Coach radar operates very differently, on that model all you do is hold the button down and it tracks the ball in flight over many measurements and automatically finds the fastest speed for you so that you do not have to time the triggering. For any ball sports or hockey, you will be much better off with the Ball Coach model. To measure vehicle speeds or runner speeds the Classic is the best choice. If you ever have any questions you can contact us toll-free at 888.381.2672 from 9 AM to 5 PM Pacific Time.Chris Stewart / President, Pocket Radar, Inc. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the return policy |
Answer: | This product qualifies for 30 day returns under the standard Amazon return policy. You can find the details and restrictions by looking up the return policy on Amazon. If you feel like you have any problems or issues using this product please contact us at Pocket Radar first and we may be able to solve your issue without having to return it to Amazon. Question: | Can this also measure swing speed of a bat |
Answer: | The Smart Coach Radar is specifically designed to track a ball traveling in a straight line. It will give you the exit speed as it leaves the bat which is the only direct measure of the power of a hit. For every extra 1 MPH that you can add to your exit velocity you get 4 to 6 feet of extra carry distance on a line drive. It will not accurately measure swing speed of the bat. While swing speed is very important, it does not tell you what will happen on a hit because there are may other variables that have to come together perfectly to create power on the ball. For instance, you can get great bat speed on a very light bat but you will lose power on the ball if the bat is too light. You can think about this by imagining what would happen if you measure a broomstick, you can get great swing speed but it will never be able to put power on a ball. The exit velocity as it leaves the bat tells you the power of the hit. If you ever have any questions about radar measurements we are always happy to help. You can contact us on our toll-free support line at 888.381.2672 weekdays from 9 AM to 5 PM Pacific Time. Thanks, Chris Stewart / President, Pocket Radar Inc. |
Question: | Is this the most accurate speed version of the Pocket Radar made? Wondering if the less expensive ones are less accurate than this one |
Answer: | When you talk about accuracy, it is very important to consider what you are measuring. Since a baseball pitch slows down by 8 to 10 MPH in a fraction of a second it is important to make sure you use a radar gun that can get the maximum speed right out of the hand. The Smart Coach Radar and the Ball Coach Radar from Pocket Radar brand both use the same automatic ball tracking technology that give you the release speed of the ball with an accuracy of +/- 1 MPH. This is better accuracy than the large very expensive radar guns that are only accurate to +/- 3% of the readings. The Classic model of Pocket Radar is less expense because it does not have the ball tracking technology. It is designed to measure things that are in motion for several seconds or more. It is also accurate to +/- 1 MPH on vehicles but is not able to track a pitch and automatically find the top speed. So all of the products are accurate to +/- 1 MPH, however you need to buy the one that is designed to track the object you want to measure. If you have any more questions about this or any other radar topic please contact us on our toll-free support line at 888.381.2672 weekdays from 9 AM to 5 PM Pacific time. Thanks, Chris Stewart / President, Pocket Radar Inc. |
Question: | Will this track the speeds of a wiffle ball |
Answer: | Yes, this product is designed to track any ball in flight with speeds from 25 MPH up to 130 MPH. We actually have videos on our social media channels of MLB players throwing whiffle balls and recording the speeds on the Smart Coach Radar and App. If you ever have any questions about any of the Pocket Radar Brand products please give us a call on our toll-free support line at 888.381.2672 weekdays from 9 AM to 5 PM Pacific Time, we are always happy to help. Question: | is this the newest version |
Answer: | Thanks for the question. There are several different models of Pocket Radar available. It is not about which is the latest model, because they are all designed for very different types of measurements. This one, The Ball Coach radar is specifically designed to track a ball in flight and automatically find the fastest speed. This is a very different measurement than the speed of a car because a baseball is only in the air for about 1/2 second and it slows down by about 8 MPH from the pitcher to the catcher. A tennis ball slows down by over 20 MPH from the racket to the bounce. The Ball Coach radar with the Blue button has a lot of extra technology inside to track a ball and accurately find the top speed. The Classis model with the Red button is very different. It is not intended for baseball or tennis. It makes an instantaneous measurement of speed when you tap the button, or repeating measurements every 3/4 of a second when you hold the button down. The Classic model is designed for measuring things that are in motion for several seconds like cars, R/C vehicles, and runners. It is very important to buy the right model for your particular measurement need. We also have other models for professional use available on our web-site at www.PocketRadar.com If you ever have any questions about which radar is best for different uses feel free to contact us toll-free at 888.381.2672 weekdays from 9 AM to 5 PM Pacific Time. Question: | we are looking for a radar gun to clock my son's lacrosse shot. Will this work |
Answer: | Colorado, Thanks for the question. The Ball Coach radar works great for lacrosse shots. It is used by many college lacrosse coaches. You can measure from behind the shooter or behind the net. With any radar gun you need to aim the radar beam directly in-line with the path of the ball to get an accurate measurement. Product description
The Glove Radar is a small Doppler radar weighing only 3 ounces, packaged in a rugged, attractive plastic case. It is attached to any ball glove with a multi-strand nylon paracord that offers over 300 pounds of tensile strength. The glove-mounted radar has been proven to withstand poundings of baseballs at speeds in excess of 100 mph. It measures ball speed from 12 mph to over 100 mph typically within 1 mph of more expensive radar guns measuring ball speed in the same relative location . It is a very low power radar, transmitting much less power than typical cell phones and portable phones. It is powered by a small N/3 size , 3 volt lithium camera battery. The product is covered by a 6-month limited warranty. The Glove Radar is certified for sale and use in the U.S., Canada, Common Market Europe, and Australia. It is made in the USA.
A small Doppler radar velocity sensor which attaches to a baseball or softball glove, the Sports Sensors Glove Radar measures the speed of a ball just before it is caught. By learning the proper way to condition, train, warm-up, and throw, players can achieve their best accuracy and velocity performance, while reducing the risks of injury to their arm and body. It can aid any player--infielders and outfielders, as well as pitchers and catchers--throwing from any distance.
![]() The Glove Radar attaches easily to the back of any glove. |
Two screws hold the cover in place, which can be removed to replace the internal battery. A strong, weather-resistant nylon cord, facilitates attachment to virtually any ball glove. A rubber pad, molded onto the housing surface adjacent to the glove, absorbs impact shock forces from the ball being caught.
The internal electronics are in "sleep" mode until activated by depressing the push-button On switch. Upon receipt of a velocity signal produced by a ball about to be caught in the glove, the ball speed is calculated and shown on the display in miles-per-hour. The Glove Radar goes into the sleep mode after an inactivity period of about a minute. It's backed by a 6-month limited warranty. Made in USA.

User questions & answers
Question: | Are any calculations required to get the correct speed |
Answer: | The Glove Radar measures the speed of the ball into the mitt. To convert that to pitchers release speed add one mph for each 7 feet of distance from the pitchers release point to the catcher. For 40 to 48 feet pitching distances, add 6 mph; for 49 to 54 feet add 7 mph and for 60 feet 6 inches, add about 8 mph, considering the pitchers stride and release . Al Dilz, Sports Sensors, Inc. , [email protected] Contact us if we can help in any way. |
Question: | Does the radar need a gap to see through or does it just sits behind glove? Was planning on using it on a catchers mit with very few gaps |
Answer: | You can use it with a catcher's glove or a regular glove. There are instructions on how to set up both. Gaps are not an issue. |
Question: | If attached to dogs colllar, would it measure how fast he runs |
Answer: | I highly doubt it It measures the time it takes for an object to go from point A to point B, start-and-stop. Not designed to measure a constantly moving object. |
Question: | Can you measure bat speed with this device |
Answer: | Yes it will measue speed - HOWEVER - I found two issues. 1) It measures approx 3 to 5 miles under speed and 2) It does not stay tight to the glove. |
