It’s probably coated nylon to make it waterproof and sweat proof and to give it some puncture resistance. Mine is fine but maybe they have changed materials since I purchased mine.

The personal has two black carrying loops in the end to carry and the foam is 2 inches but feels less able to absorb impact. The gymnastic you can feel is of a higher quality just with the feel of the canvas and feels much more durable for impact. Both are really good but the price point for the gymnastic version is justified through its higher quality despite both being exactly 2 inches of foam.
