9 best equestrian spurs

Equestrian spurs are specialized tools used by horse riders to provide subtle cues and signals to their horses. They are a part of the rider's equipment and are typically worn on the heel of riding boots. Spurs are designed to be used in conjunction with other aids, such as leg pressure and body weight shifts, to communicate with the horse and guide its movements.

Here are some key points about equestrian spurs:

  1. Purpose: Spurs are used to refine and clarify the rider's communication with the horse. They can be used to encourage the horse to move forward, turn, or make other specific movements.

  2. Design: Equestrian spurs consist of a metal or sometimes plastic shank that extends from a strap attachment. The shank has a small, pointed spur at the end, which is the part that comes into contact with the horse's sides.

  3. Usage: The rider uses their heel to apply pressure to the horse's sides through the spur when they want the horse to respond to a specific command. The degree of pressure applied can vary, depending on the rider's intent and the horse's sensitivity.

  4. Types: There are different types of spurs available, including dressage spurs, Western spurs, and jump spurs, each with slightly different designs and purposes. Some spurs have longer shanks, while others have shorter ones.

  5. Training: Riders need to be skilled and experienced to use spurs effectively. Misuse of spurs can cause discomfort or even harm to the horse, so riders must be knowledgeable about when and how to use them.

  6. Regulations: In competitive equestrian sports, there are often rules and regulations regarding the use of spurs to ensure fair and humane treatment of horses. These rules may dictate the type of spurs allowed and how they can be used during competition.

  7. Safety: It's essential for riders to be cautious when using spurs and to avoid using excessive force.Spurs should be used as a means of fine-tuning communication with the horse rather than as a primary aid.

  8. Alternative Aids: Some riders prefer to use other aids like crops and whips instead of spurs, depending on their discipline and personal preference. These aids can also be used to communicate with the horse and provide guidance.

Overall, equestrian spurs are a tool that, when used correctly and responsibly, can help riders communicate effectively with their horses during various equestrian activities and sports. Riders should always prioritize the well-being and comfort of their horses when using spurs or any other aids.

User questions & answers

Question: How wide are the straps
Answer: ABSOLUTELY...which is exactly why I bought them for my cowboy costume!!
Question: What color are the straps
Answer: They are a set. Very nice!
Question: I wear a size 7. Witch one should i get? Kids or ladies
Answer: I don’t about harnesses for a two week old mini but when I order a halter for my Shetland pony, I buy a halter to fit a 400 pound pony-sometimes it ends up being a foal halter, I’ve occasionally bought a mini halter also. Bottom line, I go by weight and that usually works for my big Quarter horse also.
Question: how long is the end
Answer: they are a more gold color
Question: will these spurs fit my size 7.5 paddock boots
Answer: It works well for a large mini, however, if yours doesn't like be cautious of him/her wearing unsupervised. The clasp side can't get hung on objects when the animal scratches or tries to pull it off. My large mini got hung up on my outside HVAC unit and nearly pulled the lines loose. We had to cover the clasp to prevent snagging.
Question: Are these Spurs round ended
Answer: Mine is 4.5 inches
