9 best fighting sports boxing gloves

Fighting sports boxing gloves are specialized gloves designed for use in the sport of boxing. They play a crucial role in protecting the hands of the boxer and their opponent while providing support and enhancing performance. Here's what you should know about boxing gloves for fighting sports:

  1. Purpose: Boxing gloves are primarily designed to protect the hands of the wearer and minimize the risk of injury during training and competition. They also help reduce the impact on the opponent, making boxing a safer sport.

  2. Weight: Boxing gloves come in various weights, typically measured in ounces (oz). The weight of the gloves affects the intensity of the workout and the level of protection. Heavier gloves (e.g., 16 oz) are often used for training and sparring, while lighter gloves (e.g., 8 oz) are used in professional bouts.

  3. Padding: The padding inside boxing gloves is usually made from foam or gel materials. This padding absorbs and distributes the force of punches, reducing the risk of hand and wrist injuries.

  4. Closure System: Boxing gloves typically feature a closure system to secure the glove on the hand. Common closure types include lace-up, hook-and-loop (Velcro), or a combination of both. Lace-up gloves provide a snug fit but require assistance to put on, while hook-and-loop gloves are more convenient for self-application.

  5. Materials: Boxing gloves are often made from high-quality leather or synthetic materials. Leather gloves are durable and provide a comfortable fit, while synthetic gloves may be more affordable and easier to clean.

  6. Hand Size and Fit: It's essential to choose boxing gloves that fit properly. Gloves that are too tight can restrict hand movement and cause discomfort, while gloves that are too loose may not provide adequate support and protection.

  7. Types of Gloves: There are different types of boxing gloves for various purposes, including:

    • Training Gloves: These are versatile gloves used for bag work, mitt work, and sparring. They offer a good balance of protection and performance.
    • Sparring Gloves: Specifically designed for sparring sessions, these gloves have extra padding to protect both the wearer and their training partner.
    • Competition Gloves: These gloves are used in official boxing matches and are often lighter to maximize speed and precision.
  8. Brand and Quality: Choosing reputable brands for boxing gloves is important to ensure durability and performance. Brands like Everlast, Cleto Reyes, Winning, and Grant are well-known for producing high-quality gloves.

  9. Care and Maintenance: Proper care is essential to prolong the life of boxing gloves. Gloves should be aired out after each use to prevent odors and sanitized regularly. Some gloves are designed with removable liners for easier cleaning.

  10. Regulations: In official boxing matches, gloves must meet specific regulations set by governing bodies like the World Boxing Association (WBA) and the International Boxing Federation (IBF). These regulations dictate glove weight, design, and other specifications.

In summary, fighting sports boxing gloves are vital equipment for boxers, providing protection for both the wearer and their opponent. Choosing the right size, weight, and closure system is crucial to ensure comfort and safety during training and competition. Quality materials and proper care can extend the life of boxing gloves and maintain their performance over time.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the best way to clean the exterior leather? I purchased the white version and the white leather is already dirty from impact with the bag. TY
Answer: No. You are looking for heavy bag gloves. You can find them on Amazon aswell.
Question: Can I put these gloves in the washing machine
Answer: I wouldn't recommend it. The whole point of these lighter, fingerless gloves is so that they can be used for mixed martial arts, where you may have to grip/grapple with your opponent. I would recommend going for the heaviest boxing gloves that fit you (I wear and would recommend 16 oz gloves, but some some women/smaller people/people with smaller hands will wear 12 or 14 oz gloves). These a) give you more protection and allow you to hit the bag harder without fear of injury and b) give you a better workout. Think of it like wearing a weighted vest while working out-one that protects you as well (they do actually sell weighted hand wraps and even weighted shinguards for kickboxing). If you're interested in actually fighting (which is usually done with smaller gloves), your punches will be that much more powerful/quicker if you train with heavier gloves.

User questions & answers

Question: what weight are the gloves
Answer: They don't shrink. I would suggest going with a size smaller, if anything they tend to stretch a bit when wearing them. I typically wear a size 2 and even the 2 in these pants give me some wiggle room.
