14 best climbing stands
Climbing stands are crucial equipment for hunters seeking an elevated vantage point in trees. These tree stand accessories enhance stealth and visibility during hunting expeditions. Here's what you need to know:
Types of Climbing Stands:
- Climbing stands come in various types, with the most common being hang-on stands, climbing tree stands, and ladder stands. Each has its advantages based on the terrain and preferences of the hunter.
Hang-On Stands:
- Hang-on stands are portable and consist of a platform and a separate seat. They require additional steps or climbing aids to ascend the tree. These stands are versatile and suitable for various tree types.
Climbing Tree Stands:
- Climbing tree stands feature a two-piece design with a climber and a platform/seat. The climber has teeth or spikes that grip the tree trunk, allowing the hunter to ascend by alternately standing up and sitting down. These stands are relatively lightweight and offer mobility.
Ladder Stands:
- Ladder stands consist of a ladder for ascending to the platform, providing a stable and comfortable hunting perch. They are ideal for semi-permanent or permanent setups.
Construction Materials:
- Climbing stands are commonly constructed from aluminum or steel for durability and strength. The choice of material influences the weight and portability of the stand.
Weight Capacity:
- It's crucial to consider the weight capacity of the climbing stand to ensure it can support the hunter and their gear comfortably. Manufacturers provide weight ratings, and exceeding these limits can compromise safety.
Safety Features:
- Safety is paramount when using climbing stands. Look for features such as secure attachment systems, safety harness compatibility, non-slip platforms, and noise reduction mechanisms.Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines for safe use.
Portability:
- Portability is a key factor for hunters who need to move from one location to another. Consider the weight, foldability, and ease of transport when selecting a climbing stand.
Comfort:
- Comfort is crucial during long hours of hunting. Look for stands with padded seats, backrests, and spacious platforms. Some stands also offer additional accessories like shooting rails for added comfort and stability.
Tree Compatibility:
- Different climbing stands may be better suited for specific tree types or sizes. Ensure that the stand you choose is compatible with the trees in your hunting area.
Remember to adhere to safety guidelines, including proper use of safety harnesses and regular equipment checks. Climbing stands can greatly enhance a hunter's visibility and success, providing a strategic advantage during the hunt. Happy hunting!

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this stand work properly on a lightpole? What is the minimum diameter of tree or pole it will climb? Thanks, Jim |
Answer: | Jim, In my opinion it will work. I also found some specs for the stand which says minimum tree diameter is 8” and max is 20”. |
Question: | Does it have a bar for steadying a rifle |
Answer: | If you are of average build, you can lower the seat height and use the top bar/side bars to build a arm/stand triangle for good accuracy. Obviously, you’re not going to win the 1000 yd trophy out of it, but for the average 100 yard whitetail hunting shot you should be good to go if you are a moderately competent shooter. Of course all bets are off when the fever kicks in! |
Question: | Would you recommend this for bow hunting |
Answer: | The summit viper is perfect for bow hunting. That's what I use mine for. Very comfortable and safe. Always wear a harness and you are good to go. |
Question: | Is this stand good for standing up to shoot a bow |
Answer: | Yes, that all i use mine for is bow hunting. Its a really good climbing stand. |

User questions & answers
Question: | On the the platform theres little spikes that diginto tree but on top section spikes face down,is this stand built wrong |
Answer: | I am not sure what yours looks like, but mine has a set of serrations on the top section and the bottom section. Bottom has more serrations than the top. Both sets bite into the tree and mine works great. This stand is really comfortable and very secure while in the tree in my experience. |
Question: | Where are the cables |
Answer: | Did yours not come with the cables |
Question: | Can you turn the seat around on this stand and face the tree |
Answer: | Yes, you can, which I believe is the reason they have 180 in the name. However, I find that the standard position with my back against the tree is more supported and comfortable. Depending on how you position the seat height in face the tree position, the sit bar is where most of your back support comes from and in a long sit, gets painful. Climbing with the seat in the 180 is moderately easier though, as you sit in the seat rather than on the bar. As an earlier response suggested, at 6'4" the stirrups feel like a reach when sitting on the bar, but it is manageable. |
Question: | How much weight the stand |
Answer: | The stand is 26 lbs with a maximum weight rating of 350 lbs. |

Answer: | Im not sure what you mean by option size due to the fact that a different size is a diffrent brand i will tell you ive hunted with the model in question for 3 years now im 5'6 195 lbs and this stand is A+ in my eyes comfortable on long sits and light enough that 1 season i hiked over a mile with it and my gear with ease. |
Question: | Why do two of the pictures show a completely different stand |
Answer: | Not sure. When I purchased ours the pictures were the same just showing different angles |
Question: | Is the "closed" aspect a removable option? In other words can a person shoot archery from a sitting position without obstruction from the closed bar |
Answer: | No the bar can not be removed. |
Question: | Does it fold real flat like the full sized SD |
Answer: | Everything is exactly the same as the larger models. Just has shorter platform. Doesn't fold as flat as the lone wolf, but much more comfortable, and easier to climb. I have both. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Anyone use this with Muddy brand sticks? How well did ir work out |
Answer: | It doesn’t work with the sticks it was meant for, so I’m guessing it doesn’t work at all for that either. |
Question: | Would these work with xop vanish and xop sticks |
Answer: | I don’t know with 100 % certainty, as I don’t have an XOP stand. XOP is made by the lone wolf founder. I suspect it would work if your XOP stand has an aluminum tube seat post. If you have the cast aluminum seat post, the. I don’t think it would work. |
Question: | Will it hold the hawk helium sticks |
Answer: | I’m not sure. Personally I’m extremely disappointed in this stuff. It’s plastic. Boo!! For the money. But that said it has a very forgiving clip radius. So it very well should work. I’ve used once this season and it was great. Just don’t forget to go long with straps. Long meaning tightening them on the long side of the stick. Damn, straps can grab a tics nutsac if not careful. But overall it does work as advertised |
Question: | Will this work with a millennium m |
Answer: | No the back brace is too wide. |
