User questions & answers
Question: | Leather or nylon sheath? Reviews and product description were conflicting |
Answer: | It only comes with the fabric. Cheapest way to make hoops is to buy a roll of heavy gauge wire from a farm supply store and cut your own. Orschelens has a roll for about 12.00. One circle cut off the roll will make a row hoop about 3' wide or so and a fabric that's 7ft wide should cover it. Buy the wider fabric and you can also cut it too size if you want to. Just be sure you have enough to pile dirt or something heavy along the sides of the rows so the wind wont blow it away. |
Question: | Where was this product manufactured |
Answer: | I don’t. I live in New York and it stays on all winter. Water goes through it so no need to water. I use it mainly to prevent deer from eating the branches. |
Question: | I just received the machete and it looks and feel great. Does anyone know the type of metal its made from |
Answer: | Not sure. We live in the desert in West Texas, it dropped into the 20’s and my plants were fine, but not sure about colder temperatures |
Question: | Can it kill a walker |
Answer: | I put one around a large hanging fern and one around a spider plant. Both were in 16”diameter moss lined hanging baskets- hope that reference helps. I would measure but they’re still packed away |

User questions & answers
Question: | How wide is the sheath |
Answer: | Just the sheath |
Question: | Will the Ontario 18inch machete fit in this |
Answer: | It depends on which 2 handed katana machete. I have the newer, longer katana machete and that sheath is pretty much identical to this sheath except it is about 2 1/2" longer. So if you have the shorter 2 handed katana machete it should fit. Hope this helps. |
Question: | is this a Machete or just a sheath? i see Machete reviews and sheath listing |
Answer: | Yes it will fit the Minn Kota Endura C2 30 lbs. trolling motor but I want to know if it will fit the Minn Kota 55 lbs Endura C2. I have this prop on my 30 lbs Endura C2 right now. |

Answer: | the 0ne I ordered did come with the wing nut to fasten it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How does this compare to the Gerber Gator? Is it worth twice the |
Answer: | I used a ruler and looked at the back of the blade...it's about 3 mm...or it could be a tiny bit less than 3, like between 2.75 and 3 mm.. I have a lot of other machetes and so far, this silky is my favorite one to use as it's nice and light so I can use fast strokes on the brush with no fatigue and I can use my wrist to give it an extra bit of speed near the end of the stroke so it's easier for me to cut thru the blackberry bushes than my heavier machetes |
Question: | I was wondering what the best way to sharpen the Yoki would be. Any advice? Would a Lansky dual grit puck work |
Answer: | Basically grab hold of the brush you are cutting and swing as low to the ground as possible with out hitting rocks or other objects including yourself. if you are really careful you can actually use a pulling-hack technique with this one to mow down brush. |
Question: | what is the blade thickness |
Answer: | About the same width as the blade but only about 1/2 thick. It's a good sheath. I recommend. |
Question: | Need this for overgrown brush in backyard, but never used a brush axe/machete before. Could someone instruct me how to use it |
Answer: | Any 18"-22" latin style machete will fit. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this actually chip through heavy brush? for as thats what i will use it for |
Answer: | The blade is 18 inches, however, 15 and 3/8 inches is the sharpened length. |
Question: | We live on a lake and cut the cattails down each spring. Will this do the job |
Answer: | Yes. Full Tang. 1095 Carbon Steel. Made In USA. Sincerely, Jacob SurvivalGeek (YouTube) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfRsUPToBXp4ZIre__dJg4A |
Question: | how long is the blade |
Answer: | Gerber used to be a good company, but sadly these days they make a lot of shoddy products that have a history of failure during hard use. This otoh is a quality tool, very good, and certainly worth the money. |
Question: | Is this machete full tang |
Answer: | I have many sharp edged tools for which I care. For those with inward facing or recurved edges I've found rod type sharpeners to work well. For large recurve edged tools such as a sickle, sythe or Yoki I use a large rod such as the Arkansas Sharpeners Superstick Ceramic Rod AC4. Best not to let tool get to dull as it's not an aggressive grit but touch it up after every couple of uses. |

Whether it's for clearing brush or chopping wood, the Tramontina 24" Polymer Handled Machete can get the job done.
User questions & answers
Question: | Is it full tang |
Answer: | Yes, a full tang. The tang runs all the way through the handle, and is bolted in |
Question: | Anyone know where to get a sheath for this Machete. Didn't find a 24" sheath in a quick search |
Answer: | Cold Steel SC97AM24 Latin Machete Sheath, Fits 97AM24. This sheath fits perfectly, seems to be well made and is inexpensive. Found it on Amazon for less than $10. by Cold Steel |
Question: | What type of steel is this machete made from |
Answer: | The blade on this machete is made out of 1070 SAE high carbon steel. Great quality. I have had many other machetes that have been made from other grades of carbon steel , but Tramontina 1070 carbon steel is hands down the best. It is VERY sturdy, does not rust quite as fast as others and takes a heck of a beating. It will last for years. A great tool. |
Question: | how thick is this machete is is flimsy like cold steel Latin machetes? im also lookin for a awesome kukri |
Answer: | The technical answer is 1-1.25 mm. I dont consider this flimsy. Good steel, thin, and perfect for canes and brush. Not a good machete for wood chores. Slicing, not chopping if that makes sense. Not an "all-arounder". |

User questions & answers
Question: | How strong is the handle |
Answer: | It'd take some effort to cut them low, but it could be done. Depends on thickness of the bunch. Good luck and watch your fingers! Tom |
Question: | What is the best way to sharpen this |
Answer: | There is no belt loop but there is a hole in the handle for a strap (not included). |
Question: | would this be effective clearing out pampas grass |
Answer: | Not likely. The OKC Kukri is shorter than a standard kukri on purpose to increase ranhe of motion when swing thecblade in areas where heavy brush is present. Itvis an awesome tool and a great tool for clearing brush, vines, bamboo, saplings and for processing wood for campfires. Also, made of 1095 Carbon Steel. The US Military has had a contract with OKC (Ontario Knife Company) for over 20 years for the OKC Machete and OKC Kukri. Remember, 1095 carbon steel is important to use (as the weakest option to consider) to resist against chipping. Full tang blades made from D2 tooling steel is far superior to carbon steel (as well as a little more expensive). Carbon steel is hard and prone to rust. Keep it oiled when not in use with a silicone multipurpose oil like 3-in-1 silicone oil (silicone repels moisture/water) or use a one-step cleaning/oiling solution with CLP by SafariLand (found on Amazon; commonly used by US military to clean and lubricate their firearms; CLP stands for Clean, Lube and Protect) directly after sharpening and before storing your blade for long term storage in a humidity free environment (preferably indoors). Adding a patina with Birchwood Casey: Super Blue directly to the uncoated carbon steel will add a great defense against (clean the metal with 91% isopropyl alcohol and allow blade to dry; heating the steel in your kitchen oven for under 10 minutes at 150-degrees will help the Super Blue create a better patina by penetrating the surface of the steel better/faster). Blend in any uneven areas of patina with light, circular scrubbing with a green, heavy-duty Scotch Bright pad and hot tap water. 2 or 3 applications may be needed to create a great patina. Each application only takes 60-seconds before you rinse of the metal with water to neutralize the super blue chemical agent. Wear nitrile gloves and at least a P95 disposable respirator when working with Birchwood Casey Super Blue (magnum blue isn't necessary; Super Blue is the strongest). Chipping over time, depending on what your cutting is inevitable. Keep a sharp edge on your blade. A dull edge causes more wear on the blade and causes you to perform more work in the field. If you're unfamiliar with field sharpening a machette with a bastard mill file, consider a Smith's Axe and Machete Sharpener. It has carbide sharpening tips that reshape damaged blades while making the blade extremely sharp in under 5 to 10 one-direction passes. Always swing the blade of your machete in a downwards, diagonal direction that's swinging away from your body for most efficient use of energy and for safety purposes to prevent the blade from becoming embedded in your body. If you consider modifying the cutting edge of your machete, consider the following: *Scandi Edge for Planing and Shaving Bark (Lower part of machete blade near handle) *Convex Edge for Chopping wood, limbs, saplings, vines, brush, bamboo, etc... (Upper part of machete blade away from handle) Sincerely, Jacob SurvivalGeek (YouTube) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfRsUPToBXp4ZIre__dJg4A |
Question: | Looking to buy this to carry camping. is there a loop for belts? i want to strap it to my bag. kind of over kill, but the fiskars warranty is worth it |
Answer: | I can't see why not. I've cut through some pretty thick stuff with it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it have full tang |
Answer: | 1/8" |
Question: | Where the machetes made |
Answer: | Some machetes are made like that. Its so the tip doesnt get in the way or caught when you are swinging at vegetation such as vines or brush. |
Question: | What is the blade thickness |
Answer: | Handle is very good.ideal one handed or two... |
Question: | Why is there no blade tip |
Answer: | You would be able to sharpen this in whatever way works best for you. A wet stone, bench grinder, belt sander, or even a cheap pull through manual sharpener would all work. However, it comes with a razor sharp hair splitting edge and it holds the edge pretty well, so you won’t need to sharpen it for a while. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What the thickness of the blade is |
Answer: | I am not sure but I believe it is 16"-18". I would not exactly classify it as a blade. Perhaps it is a chunk of dull steel. It does not hold an edge for even two or three minutes. I was not able to cut anything with it. I bought another machete and use the scabbard that come with this one for the real machete that I bought. Do yourself a favor and don't spend the money. |
Question: | is it made in america |
Answer: | Paper thin canvas. Don't buy this piece of garbage. Get the Ontario Knife version for another $10, and you will be amazed at the difference. The Coleman machete feels like a child's toy by comparison (I own both). |
Question: | Is it full tang |
Answer: | Black this is garbage. It does not hold an edge for ten minutes. Spend a little bit more and get a car better product. |

User questions & answers
Question: | On this blade and some of Shrade's other ones I have seen complaint and pictures of breakage. Has this issue been resolved |
Answer: | 1/4" but I've cut through some thick stuff with it |
Question: | Is the handle long enough for a two handed grip? Thanks for answering, in advance |
Answer: | The machete itself does not state exactly where it's made. From my research about Gerber they state they still make many of their knives in Portland, Oregon since 1939. The small leaflet doesn't state where it is exatly made either. I hope and assume it is made in Portland. Hope this answers your question. |
Question: | Weight of Machete |
Answer: | I would have to say no. There Gator Bolo is listed as full tang. This one is not. So far I haven’t had any issues with mine. The Bolo is quite a bit more money than this one. |
Question: | What is the blade length, how sharp did it come |
Answer: | How big is the hole. Lol.. I got it as a gift. Will ask my friend and get back to you. |
