Shimano SLX MGL 70 Low Profile Baitcast Reel

SHIMANO

Based on 17 reviews Check latest price

Product description

An addition to the highly-touted family of SLX reels, the SLX MGL 70 features Shimano’s low inertia MGL Spool in a compact 70-size reel. The MGL Spool excels in the castability of both finesse and heavy lures, while the compact size of the SLX MGL 70 makes it a perfect reel for light-line applications as well as flipping and pitching. But don’t count the SLX MGL 70 out in heavy-cover situations because of its compact size, the Cross Carbon Drag provides more than enough stopping power to keep trophy bass out of the trees. The SLX MGL 70 incorporates Shimano’s SVS Infinity Braking System to increase casting distance and enables anglers to achieve the ideal cast by easily making adjustments from the palming side plate to match changing weather conditions or casting a variety of lures. Just like the rest of the SLX family, the SLX MGL 70 is built with the same tournament-ready, rigid HAGANE Body for increased durability and a lifetime of performance.

  • HAGANE Body: The HAGANE Body is a metal reel body with high rigidity. The body rigidity and impact resistance virtually eliminates body flexing. The result transforms the angler's actions directly into cranking power. It's efficiency through strength.
  • MGL Spool III: An ultra-thin spool that thoroughly pursues low inertia. The spool has a reduction in inertia by about 15% compared to the second-generation MGL Spool by using a narrow shape with a width of 19 mm for the outer diameter of 34 mm. Resulting in unparalleled casting performance.
  • SVS Infinity: Shimano's newest innovation in brake system technology, SVS Infinity provides easy-to-manage, consistent spool control and brake force. With brake weights that use inner friction against the raceway during the cast, SVS Infinity controls spool speed for precision casting especially when using lighter lures. The external adjustment knob provides for quick, precise adjustments for either the conditions or when you switch baits.

User questions & answers

Question: On that reel do you reel with your right hand
Answer: 200 series are right handed “reel with right hand” 201 series are left handed” reel with left hand
Question: Which fishing line would you use for this reel? I am debating between copolymer or braid
Answer: I use main braid and add about a ten foot fluro leader. However it depends what gear ratio you bought and what you are using the reel for. For the 7.4.1 I use 30 lb braid 12-14 lb fluro leader. I use this for all my jig set ups, rattle traps, spinner/ chatter bait ect 8.5.1 I’d use 50-65 lb braid for topwater frogs and for pitching and flipping into grass and pads. Also a heavier leader for clearer water but still to do the same technique17-20 pound fluro or 20 lb mono for a top water spook, popper or whopper plopper Any gear ratios 6.3..1 and under I use for cranking which then I sometimes use straight fluro 12-14 lb for 1/4- 3/8 oz square bills anything heavier use 15-17 lb fluro However this is all opinionated, every fisherman will tell you something different, however hopefully this helps. Good luck great reel for the price!
Question: where is it the shimano made
Answer: I have no idea. Nevertheless it is a great reel.
Question: How do you know if left or right handed
Answer: Shimano low profile reels ending with 01 are left hand retrieve.

Product features

MICRO MODULE GEAR

The Micro Module Gear System creates a smooth retrieve. The new gear set makes use of smaller teeth and more of them. This means that there are more contact points between the drive gear and pinion gear. The result is a more efficient gear train with less gear feel.

X-SHIP

X-Ship provides improved gear durability. By supporting the pinion gear on both ends with bearings, the pinion gear maintains precise alignment with the drive gear. This means the gears will stay in the same position under the heaviest loads. The added benefit is that friction between the spool shaft and gear are eliminated. This will enhance the casting performance of the reel with lighter lures, and allow for longer casts.

HAGANE BODY

The HAGANE Body is a metal reel body with high rigidity. The body stiffness and impact resistance virtually eliminates body flexing. The result transforms the angler's actions directly into cranking power. It's efficiency through strength.

SVS INFINITY

The SVS Infinity provides easy-to-manage, consistent spool control and brake force. With brake weights that use inner friction against the raceway during the cast, SVS Infinity controls spool speed for precision casting especially when using lighter lures. The external adjustment knob provides for quick, precise adjustments for either the conditions or when you switch baits.

CI4+

The new CI4+ is the next generation of Shimano's CI4 material and 250% stronger. It is over one and a half times stronger than Shimano's normal XT-7 graphite and is over 20% lighter. Because it does not contain metal, it is also impervious to rust. So, as a result of its strength and weight, it allows Shimano to create an extremely lightweight reel with very precise tolerances.

SUPER FREE SPOOL

SF was designed to eliminate friction on the spool shaft during the cast. In standard baitcasting reels, when the clutch bar is pressed down, the pinion gear is freed and actually can drag on the spool shaft creating friction that can limit the length of a cast. With SF the pinion gear is supported by a ball bearing so that when the clutch is disengaged in preparation for a cast, the pinion gear and spool shaft are kept in perfect alignment.

SUPER STOPPER

Super Stopper anti-reverse uses a one-way stainless steel roller bearing that eliminates back-play. This provides the angler with instant hook setting power.

A-RB

These stainless steel ball bearings are specially treated to drastically increase the corrosion resistance of the bearing. These bearings will last at least 10 times longer than standard stainless steel ball bearings in high salinity environments.

SHIMANO

Product description

Small in hand but large in durability, dependability and performance, the Curado MGL 70 K is a new addition to Shimano’s coveted line of Curado low-profile reels. The reel’s lightweight MGL Spool requires less start-up energy due to decreased inertia and results in longer casts with reduced effort. This advanced feature also allows the reel to excel for anglers fishing with finesses baits, such as handmade balsa baits, or lures that require light line for maximum fishability. The new Curado MGL 70 K is a great reel choice for anglers pitching and flipping in tight cover when increased line capacity is not required. But anglers shouldn’t be concerned about its compact size when fighting fish in close quarters or heavy cover, the Curado MGL 70 K is equipped with a Cross Carbon Drag to provide the needed stopping power against large fish. And just like the rest of the Curado family of reels, the versatile Curado MGL 70 K features MicroModule Gear for enhanced smoothness as well as a HAGANE Body for increased rigidity and durability for years of fishing performance.

  • HAGANE Body: The HAGANE Body is a metal reel body with high rigidity. The body rigidity and impact resistance virtually eliminates body flexing. The result transforms the angler's actions directly into cranking power. It's efficiency through strength.
  • MagnumLite (MGL) Spool: This design significantly reduces the moment of inertia (~10%), allowing anglers to experience greater casting distance (~20%) and accuracy with a wider variety of lures.
  • MicroModule Gear: The MicroModule system creates a smooth retrieve. The new gear set makes use of smaller teeth and more of them. This means that there are more contact points between the drive gear and pinion gear. The result is a more efficient gear train with less gear feel.
  • CI4+ Side Plate: This material is an advanced version of the original CI4. This highly technical carbon material maintains 2.5 times more rigidity than CI4. While improving lightness and rigidity, the side plate is further reduced in size and weight.

Product description

The S A-RB bearings have been through the same process as our A-RB bearings; but feature shields on both sides of the bearings that reduce the possibility of salt or sand inhibiting the bearing's position. The dyna-balance feature eliminates wobble during the retrieve by counter balancing the rotor to enhance sensitivity and smoothness. By using computer balancing; an approach similar to car tire balancing; we are able to redistribute the rotor weight to create smooth rotation and eliminate vibrations. Building upon the successes of Fluidrive; Fluidrive II features a large master gear polished using a wrapping process; increasing the efficiency of the retrieve. The most obvious component of the propulsion line management system is the new propulsion spool lip design. Through tens of thousands of casting tests and computer simulations it has been determined that this new spool lip design provides longer casting distances than a standard spool lip design while preventing backlashes and wind knots from forming. Super stopper II anti-reverse uses a one-way roller bearing that eliminates back-play. This provides the angler with instant hook setting power. Normal oscillation systems use a constant rotation of the oscillation gear that; when translated to the cam; provides an inconsistent spool speed. This results in the line lay that stacks at either end of the spool. By using an oval oscillation gear; we are able to alter the speed of the oscillation cam to provide a consistent spool speed. This results in an even line lay that provides excellent castability and manageability. From an angling perspective; every individual who has owned and enjoyed using Shimano tackle has a reason to thank a Japanese visionary named Shozaburo Shimano; who in 1921 declared “I aim to make Shimano's products the best in Kansai; then the best in Japan; and finally the best in the world. For over 80 years; Shimano has concentrated on precision engineering; one step at a time. Creating the m

Calcutta B

The Calcutta series of reels represents the core of Shimano's quality, versatility, dependability and long-term value. In sizes from the ultralight 50 to the 30# class 700, there's a Calcutta reel for almost any application, in fresh or saltwater. Super Stopper

Super Stopper anti-reverse uses a one-way stainless steel roller bearing that eliminates back-play. This provides the angler with instant hook setting power.

VBS

VBS uses centrifugal force rather than magnets to aid in controlling the cast. When turned on, the individual brake weights are forced outward at the beginning of the cast when backlashes most often occur, causing friction that reduces the speed of the spool. Once the spool speed begins to slow, the pressure with which the brake weights contact the raceway lessens, allowing the spool to continue spinning.

CF Aluminum Cold Forge Spool

These spools provide increased strength and durability over diecast aluminum or graphite spools.

Metal Series

The metal construction showcased in some of our finest reels now appears throughout our line of Metal Series products. Metal frames not only keep moving parts in precise alignment, they also feature the use of the latest anodizing, plating and painting techniques for beautiful and durable finishes.

Product features

MICROMODULE

HAGANE

The HAGANE Body is a metal reel body with high rigidity. The body stiffness and impact resistance virtually eliminates body flexing. The result transforms the angler's actions directly into cranking power. It's efficiency through strength.

CI4+

CI4+ is the ultimate in lightweight technology.

I-DC4

Intelligent Digital Control braking system with an easy to use, 4 setting, externally adjustable brake dial. This will allow anglers to fish a wide variety of lures, in any conditions, with minimal adjustment to the reel.

CROSS CARBON DRAG

This drag material provides a wider range of drag settings, along with the smoothest Shimano drag performance ever.
