| Answer: | These were designed for BASS fishing. If you were to catch a catfish on this, it would be almost pure luck... occasionally, a cat will hit artificial lure(my buddy caught a 28 lb flathead while night-time walleye fishing with a Rapala minnow lure. It was after 10pm by the time we got the fish landed, and we weighed it in the meat department of the local supermarket!! LOL The store manager gave us some trashbags to wrap the fish in - you should have seen the looks as we strolled thru the aisles with a giant fish in our basket!), but to SPECIFICALLY go after cats with lures, you'd be more successful buying lottery tickets. Catfish feed primarily by scent and taste. In fact, they have taste buds ALL OVER THEIR BODIES! They will pick up scent and taste before ever even seeing or touching a prey... that's why stinkbaits and strongly-scented natural baits work so well for them. Chicken liver is excellent for channel cats, you just need to wrap it in some fine netting(available in the sewing section of WalMart) and then run the hook thru the cloth netting to keep it all together. That's a trick salmon fisherman use up North for drifting salmon eggs in rivers. Shrimp and cut shad are very good as well. Blue cats primarily go after shad as they are primarily an open water species. If you're in a boat, drifting with live shad is great - you might catch a striper or 3 doing this too if they are present in the body of water you're fishing. Flathead catfish feed almost exclusively on LIVE prey and are most active after dark. It's a good bet to catch some bluegills during the day, then use them for bait that night(following all local laws, of course). Hope this helps!! |

| Answer: | In my opinion, this bait is best used for flipping into heavy cover, like weeds, grass or lay-down logs, etc. I rig it 'texposed' with a 5/0 extra-wide gap hook and a 1/2 ounce(or heavier, depending on the cover) bullet weight. If this terminology is unfamiliar to you, there are lots of good videos on youtube- it's abit complicated to explain with text, but by actually watching someone do it, it's not hard at all to learn. Use heavy line, at least 20# if you're using mono or fluorocarbon, but I personally use braid, 50# or even 65#, and a stout rod.All that being said, one CAN use the smaller sizes as a drop shot bait. Here is where spinning gear and lighter line, 8# or 10# test, depending on cover/water clarity, can come into play. Again, youtube can show you how to rig a Brush Hog on a drop shot rig. |
