Answer:	I love Hummingbirds so I try to provide them with the safest environment possible. According to hummingbirds.net (and many other sources) the best way to clean a feeder is with every feeding, flush the feeder with hot tap water. I use a brush to keep the holes clean. DO NOT USE SOAP - hummers do not like the taste. Visually inspect the feeder for black mold; a bleach soak (of 1/4 cup bleach to 1 gallon of water) for one hour, then clean thoroughly with a brush to remove the mold and rinse very well in hot water. A dirty feeder is likely to cause harm. One of the saddest things I've ever seen with a hummer in my garden was the day I watched a hummer sitting on my feeder, unable to feed because it's beak was diseased and too large to fit in the feeder hole - this was during colder weather when no flowers were in bloom - (my guess - not an expert here - I've read about this, a fungal infection caused from a dirty feeder somewhere else in the neighborhood). Since hummers do not like the taste of soap, my guess is cleaning the feeder in a dishwasher as often as needed for healthy birds would not be a good idea since they do not like the taste of soap/detergent.
