Regarding dress shirt, it would depend on the shirt and preferred fit of that shirt. A cotton classic fit shirt would work best. A tighter fitting 'Euro' fit shirt may be more revealing. Also, transparency of the shirt fabric would be an issue. A lighter weight white fabric dress shirt would reveal the brace... much like a white sleeveless tank type T-shirt can be detected.
