Answer:	It depends on what they weigh. It's for 30-50 lb kids. If your 5 yr old is almost 50 lbs, you'd probably want to get the next size up, otherwise their chin may be under water. Also, this vest has a narrow fit, so if your kids are chunky, they might find it too tight. Check the provided chest measurements.

His 9 year old friend borrowed it for a short boat ride, bigger kid probably pushing the 90 lb. wt. limit and it was very snug and looked uncomfortable.

I use it at the beach without issues so he can get in the water with me. (Under my close supervision of course.) Answer:	In our experience, it's a huge improvement from nothing! Our 22-pound 20-month-old still gets cold after ~30 minutes in the pool...but at least she can now make it through an entire swimming lesson without turning blue. It's not magic, but short of a dry suit (which nobody makes for kids), a properly fitting neoprene wetsuit is about as good as you can hope to do.
