6 best gel coats
Gel coats are a type of protective coating commonly used in the boating and marine industry, as well as in other applications like fiberglass repair and maintenance. Here is what you need to know about gel coats:
Protective Layer: Gel coat is a protective layer applied to the outer surface of fiberglass and composite materials used in boats and other marine equipment. It acts as a barrier, protecting the underlying material from environmental factors and wear and tear.
Appearance: Gel coats are available in a wide range of colors and finishes, and they are often used to give boats a glossy and aesthetically pleasing appearance. They can be matched to the desired color or finish for a particular boat or application.
UV Resistance: Gel coats are formulated to resist the damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. This UV resistance helps maintain the color and appearance of the coated surface over time.
Waterproof and Corrosion-Resistant: Gel coats create a waterproof barrier, preventing water from penetrating the underlying fiberglass. They also provide protection against corrosion, which is essential in a marine environment.
Repair and Maintenance: Gel coats are used in the repair and maintenance of fiberglass boats. They can be applied to areas where the gel coat has been damaged, scratched, or worn down. This helps restore the surface's appearance and protective properties.
Application: Applying gel coat involves a multi-step process that includes surface preparation, mixing the gel coat material, and careful application. Gel coat is typically applied in thin layers to achieve the desired finish.
Curing: Gel coat is designed to cure or harden when exposed to the appropriate curing method, which may involve exposure to UV light or a chemical curing agent. The curing process is necessary for the gel coat to bond properly and provide the desired protection.
Sanding and Polishing: After curing, gel coat surfaces often require sanding and polishing to achieve a smooth and glossy finish. This step is important for maintaining the aesthetic appeal of the coated surface.
Boating and Sailing: Gel coats are widely used in the boating and sailing industry, where they protect the hull and other parts of the boat from the harsh marine environment. They are also used on personal watercraft, yachts, and various marine accessories.
Maintenance Supplies: Gel coats, along with the necessary tools and materials for their application and maintenance, are considered part of the maintenance supplies for boat owners and marine enthusiasts.
In summary, gel coats are a vital component in the world of boating and marine applications. They provide a protective and aesthetically pleasing finish to fiberglass and composite surfaces, ensuring the longevity and performance of boats and marine equipment. Their UV resistance, waterproof properties, and ability to withstand the harsh marine environment make them an essential component in boat maintenance and repair.

User questions & answers
Question: | can this be sprayed on? And how many square feet does it cover |
Answer: | This is a thick lotion like liquid that needs to be applied and worked by hand or machine and then wiped off. Please feel free to give our Solutions Hub a call at (800) 347-5700 to discuss the specifics of your job. Any of our reps will be happy to help you figure out the best process and products with you. |
Question: | Can this gelcoat be tinted with pigments |
Answer: | Oxidation remover is more of a rubbing compound that cleans deep down to new fiberglass and has enough wax to leave a shine. 'One Step' is also a cleaner but not nearly as aggressive and has more wax. Both are superb, but for different degrees of oxidation. |
Question: | I have a jetski with pits in hull, can i just paint this on and apply a couple of coats, after prepping it and what would be best, with or without wax |
Answer: | I tried to remove oxidation from the sides of my Cougar fifth wheel trailer with little to no success. I tried to rub it out both by hand and with a power buffer. I am having more success with TR3 but the product I have is old and I have been told the formulation has changed and the new product is not as effective. It is a lot of work regardless of what you use and the end result for me was disappointing. |
Question: | Will this product run, or can it be molded to hold the desired shape |
Answer: | Hi i bought. A gal of it i have a 38 ft fifth wheel it is 12'6''tall we used about 2/3of it the hole thing is glass ,it was the best i ever used ,easy on easy off ,shines like a cats butt,it workes great !!!!! |

TotalBoat ISO/NPG Gelcoat is Stronger, More Flexible, More Durable, and Easy to Apply.
TotalBoat marine-grade ISO/NPG Gelcoats are the choice of pros for many boatbuilding and boat repair applications due to their greater strength, flexibility, and resistance to weather, water, and chemicals than standard orthophthalic polyester gelcoats. Available with and without wax, TotalBoat Gelcoat With Wax cures tack free to a hard, sandable finish perfect for air dry applications, such as coating. Cured gelcoat can be wet sanded, buffed, and polished to a protective, head-turning, high-gloss finish. TotalBoat Gelcoat Without Wax remains tacky. It's commonly used as the initial layer in polyester resin layups. Our premium Gelcoat comes in White and Neutral colors that are compatible with colorants (pigments / tints) for gelcoat and polyester resins. For best results, be sure your gelcoat and your work area are between 70°F and 95°F.
Adjust the Amount of Catalyst from 1-3% to Control the Setup Time in Different Temperature Conditions.
With polyester gelcoat, proper catalyzation is critical for a proper cure. Cool temperatures may require adding a higher percentage of MEKP catalyst than warm conditions. The more catalyst added, the faster the gelcoat cures. Because air and surface temperatures also affect dry times, take care not to over-catalyze or under-catalyze. We recommend a trial batch to determine final catalyst ratio.
Can be Tinted with Pigments Suitable for Gelcoat and Polyester Resins
Adding color to white gelcoat creates lighter, pastel colors. Adding color to neutral gelcoat creates bold, darker colors. TotalBoat White Gelcoat (with wax or without wax) can be tinted by adding up to 1% colorant. TotalBoat Neutral Gelcoat can be tinted by adding up to 10% colorant (up to 12% for red, yellow, purple, orange, and light green).
IMPORTANT: Always mix in colorant before adding MEKP.
Ideal for Coating
TotalBoat Gelcoat With Wax cures to a hard, durable coating that can be wet sanded and buffed to a super high gloss finish. Use on powerboat and yacht hulls, RVs, composite parts, and much more.
Great for Layups
Apply TotalBoat Gelcoat Without Wax to a mold prepared with mold release agent, then apply a fiberglass laminate over the tacky gelcoat. Works great for spray-up or hand layup techniques to create molded fiberglass boats or composite parts.
Compatible with Colorants
TotalBoat Gelcoats can be tinted to achieve a desired color. TIP: When tinting, always mix in coloring agent before adding MEKP.
- Tinting TotalBoat White Gelcoat (with wax or without wax) creates lighter, pastel colors. Add up to 1% polyester resin or gelcoat colorants.
- Tinting TotalBoat Neutral Gelcoat (with or without wax) creates bold or darker colors. Add up to 10% polyester resin or gelcoat colorants (up to 12% for red, yellow, purple, orange, and light green).
Perfect for Cosmetic Repairs
TotalBoat Gelcoat repairs cosmetic damage easily. It can be applied over cured polyester or vinyl ester fairing compounds, then wet sanded and buffed to a high-gloss finish, for a repair that blends in with the surrounding gelcoat. But what if you used an epoxy fairing compound?
Can you apply TotalBoat polyester Gelcoat DIRECTLY over a repair faired with an epoxy-based fairing compound? The answer depends on a few things.
• If the repair area is small, if the damage is cosmetic only (not structural), and with proper surface preparation—yes, TotalBoat Gelcoat can be applied directly over cured epoxy-based fairing compound.
• If the repair area is large, and if the damage compromises structural integrity—the answer is no. In these cases, you would fill the damage with an epoxy-based fairing compound such as TotalBoat TotalFair, allow it to cure, then apply TotalBoat 2-Part Epoxy Primer or TotalBoat TotalProtect Epoxy Barrier Coat Primer over TotalFair, before applying Gelcoat.
It all started simply enough. As boaters, we wanted better stuff for our own boats.
Even our favorite products, the ones we'd come to rely on, had room for improvement. It'd be nice if they could hold up longer, cure faster, coat better, apply easier, and—since we all know boat ownership creates a mini maelstrom in your pocket—cost less. So we took everything we knew from 35 years of customer feedback, combined that with our own boating knowledge, and after a few years of rigorous R&D, TotalBoat was born. Launched, rather. By boaters, for boaters.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it thin enough to use a paint sprayer |
Answer: | You need to have a high pressure sprayer. I think A134 gun maybe. You can probably look up gel coat spray gun |
Question: | Is this bright white or off white |
Answer: | Bright White. a good buffing when cured really brings out shine |
Question: | difference between with wax or without wax |
Answer: | Gelcoat without wax will not harden if it is exposed to air. The gelcoat with wax will harden exposed to air. The wax rises to the top and makes a skim coat over the top making a separation barrier so air can not come in contact and the gelcoat will cure. |
Question: | What is the difference between wax or no wax |
Answer: | I believe a difference is that with non-waxed you can apply coat upon coat, and with waxed you must sand between coats. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Pardon my ignorance but may I use this after sanding too deep (through the gelcoat)? I mistakenly used a #60 paper. Is this the correct product |
Answer: | Yes this product will work great. I was far below the gelcoat and it worked super. Careful to use the proper amount of hardner. Use less harder if concerned. |
Question: | How do I match the color |
Answer: | Trial and error. Get a pack of popsicle sticks for mixing and a box of clear, small mixing cups with ml markings. Put a fixed amount of white gelcoat in each cup and a varying amount of dye drops in the cups. Mix em all up, apply, and let it sit for a several DAYS in direct sunlight. The mix that best matches the original is the winner. |
Question: | How white is this |
Answer: | Is this a serious question or are you a racist? It’s white. Project differs shades of light on it and it will reflect different shades of white. |
Question: | As with regular fiberglass resin I know the ratio is 10 drops of hardener with every ounce of resin what would be the ratio for mixing this |
Answer: | That would depend on how "hot" you mix it (how fast you want it to set up.) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work for “below the waterline” on a jet ski |
Answer: | It worked for me, It is color pigment in regular glass resin |
Question: | I just noticed some cracks in the gelcoat on the left top corner of my camper today. How hard is this to use, and any instructions to share |
Answer: | Be advised gelcoat has no tensile strength to speak of. If it is cracked it is usually because the underlying fiberglass is either cracked or insufficiently strong to prevent stress cracks in the gelcoat. They way to check is to use a die grinder (electric or air) and a burr to grind out the crack a bit to investigate. Make a vee shaped bevel along the crack just through the gelcoat to see what the fiberglass looks like. It is also advisable to not ruin the existing shape of your corner because then you will have to remake it. My point is that if you need to repair or reinforce the glass of your camper top, first look to see if you can access the interior and beef up or repair the glass from the inside which won't affect the shape of the outside and won't be seen. You can then just fill the expanded crack in the gelcoat. It will be easy to fair it and retain the original shape of the corner. If the glass is cracked or you want reinforce it, and you cannot access the interior of the fiberglass top, make your bevel wider and deeper. For strength you want at least a 5 to 1 bevel (each side). You then cut glass cloth or mat in strips to fit in the crack. You start with narrow and get wider and wider until the wedge of the bevel will be filled. Don't completely fill the bevel. You need to leave room for the gelcoat so it can be faired with surrounding surface. You will need a bubble roller to roll out each layer the fiberglass. Try to fill it all at once, but if you don't have wax in the resin you can let it kick and put more coats after it kicks completely without grinding anything but high spots. I find it easier for small jobs to fill it completely. I do everything possible to avoid grinding fiberglass. Once it kicks (it will remain tacky due to lack of wax) you can fill it the rest of the way with color matched gelcoat. Again don't use wax until the last coat of gelcoat. The gelcoat should be proud (stick up beyond the surrounding surface so that you can sand it back, fairing it. When it is fair, rub it out with polishing compound not buffing compound to make it shiny and then wax it. |
Question: | Is a color chart included with instructions on how you can achieve different colors(blue and tan in my case) by mixing these tubes |
Answer: | No color chart is provided with this kit, however, a gelcoat color guide is available on our site. Bottom Paint Store |
Question: | Will this work on RV wall where a screw penetrated from inside out |
Answer: | I would grind down the protruding portion of the screw first then you could use it to fill in the area |

White Gelcoat with Wax Pint with 15cc Hardener (MEKP) Gelcoat with wax is for the final coat. The wax settles to the top and need to constantly be mixed. If not mixed properly your gelcoat will have patches that are still sticky. The wax helps dry the gelcoat all the way so it won't be sticky and also so it can be sanded. Remember without the wax your gelcoat will remain sticky.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this come with hardener |
Answer: | Yes it does. |
Question: | Can it be applied with a roller |
Answer: | Yes, it can be applied with a roller. |
Question: | Does this require that you cover it with plastic in order to cure it |
Answer: | No, the wax “floats” to the surface and promotes curing. Gelcoat without wax needs to be covered with a thin film like PVA. |
Question: | I'm looking to refinish a cultured marble counter-top. Is this a hard surfaced coating that will hold up in a sink |
Answer: | I would doubt that this would hold up in a sink application. Try the manufacturer. |
