8 best 12 volt bilge pumps
12-volt bilge pumps are essential marine devices used in boating for the purpose of removing water that collects in the bilge, which is the lowest compartment on a boat's hull. Here's some information related to 12-volt bilge pumps and their connection to categories such as bilge pumps, boat plumbing, boating, boating and sailing, sports and fitness, and sports outdoors:
Bilge Pumps:
- Bilge pumps are designed to pump out water that accumulates in the bilge area of a boat. They play a crucial role in preventing water buildup that can lead to damage or sinking.
Boat Plumbing:
- Bilge pumps are integral components of boat plumbing systems. They are typically installed in the bilge and are activated automatically when water reaches a certain level.
Boating:
- Boating enthusiasts rely on bilge pumps to keep their boats dry and safe. These pumps are especially important in situations where water may enter the boat due to rain, waves, or other factors.
Boating and Sailing:
- Bilge pumps are relevant to both boating and sailing activities. Sailboats, like any other vessels, require effective bilge pumps to maintain a dry and safe interior.
Sports and Fitness:
- While not directly related to physical fitness, the proper functioning of bilge pumps contributes to the safety and security of boating activities, aligning with the broader category of sports and fitness.
Sports Outdoors:
- Boating and related activities fall under the category of sports outdoors, and bilge pumps are essential tools for maintaining a safe and dry environment on boats.
Types of Bilge Pumps:
- 12-volt bilge pumps are designed to operate on the standard 12-volt electrical systems commonly found on boats. They are available in different types, including submersible and non-submersible pumps.
Automatic Operation:
- Many 12-volt bilge pumps are designed to operate automatically. They are equipped with float switches that activate the pump when the water level in the bilge rises to a certain point.
Manual Override:
- Some bilge pumps also come with manual override switches, allowing users to activate the pump manually if needed.
Installation and Maintenance:
- Proper installation and regular maintenance of bilge pumps are crucial for their reliable operation. This includes checking for debris, testing the pump's functionality, and ensuring that the automatic switches are working correctly.
Emergency Preparedness:
- Bilge pumps are considered part of a boat's emergency preparedness equipment. They contribute to the overall safety of the vessel and its occupants in case of unexpected water ingress.
Having 12-volt bilge pumps on board is a common practice, as it aligns with the electrical systems commonly found on boats. It ensures that boaters have a reliable means of keeping their vessels dry and secure while out on the water.

User questions & answers
Question: | Could a 1 1/2 " ID vinyl tube fit over the outlet |
Answer: | We suggest the Outlet Dia. is 1-1/8" (29mm). |
Question: | Has anyone used this in a kayak? Seems like it would work better than the bicycle-style pump because you could paddle to shore while it does the work |
Answer: | I have installed electric pumps in all my kayaks and they work great. The issues are finding a waterproof switch that is easy to push with a spray skirt attached and the power source. I use lithium rechargeable battery in a waterproof case mounted in the day hatch and connected using Bulgin connectors. Be careful using automotive style switches and connectors. They say they are waterproof, but they aren't designed for submersion. |
Question: | Does it come with clamps for battery terminals |
Answer: | No, it does not come with either. Attaching some alligator clips is pretty easy for the wires (they are pre-stripped), and while there are no clamps it does hold hose fairly well. |
Question: | Can the whole pump be submerged in water. Trying to feed a fish cleaning station on a dock. Thanks |
Answer: | Yes,the whole pump 100% can be submerged in water. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what size bilge pump is needed for a 24' boat |
Answer: | The ID of your discharge hose should be 1-1/8". You'll find that this odd size is hard to find and sort of ruins the usefulness of the Pelican pump. Why Pelican would create a product with a useless hose barb, then not also sell the weird size that you can't find anywhere else... |
Question: | can it be used in cold weather to flood a pond |
Answer: | The tag does state that it floats although we haven’t tested it |
Question: | How does it mount? Assume the strainer is screwed down |
Answer: | It works both up and down, very efficient! |
Question: | Is this listing for one or two pumps? The picture shows two but I cant find a quantity in the listing |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Can this product be used on raw wood prior to applying a finish (ie Rubio monocoat oil wax |
Answer: | I use for water only |
Question: | What country is "Touch of Oranges" from |
Answer: | The pump is 24" long and the hose is 36" |
Question: | Can this product be used on unfinished wood |
Answer: | Yes. just measured it and it's 2". You could insert it into shaft to a depth of 21.5" before you would hit the L fitting at the top or where the hose is connected to the body of the bilge. Goody Luck! BTW: It's a good little water pump. |
Question: | Can you use this on Bamboo flooring |
Answer: | I use it to pump out hole when I make irrigation repairs at my church. It will not suck up rocks and mud but it will handle very dirty water. It is important to pump some clean water through it after use in muddy water to flush it out. Good product I recommend. |
Question: | Environmental friendly |
Answer: | 1 inch inside diameter x 1 1/4 diameter clear tubing 24 inches long from the local hardware store that sells bulk tubing by the foot. Cut the end square and soak it in a cup of boiling water for about 5 seconds to soften the tubing and make it easy to slide over the pump output. 18 to 24 inches is the ideal length and depends on the beam of your kayak. Works like a charm... |
Question: | Can you please tell me what size containers are provided in this set? Thank you |
Answer: | There’s a side port up by the handle. The water is expelled with each motion (up and down). May want to get some clear tubing to route the water where you want it to go (approx 2 feet). |
Question: | Dors this protect from water rings and such on a kitchen table |
Answer: | Yes. The pump has a buoyant foam sleeve cover that floats. |
Question: | Can it be used to clean wooden rails on the staircase |
Answer: | I'm not sure what country it doesn't say |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the amp draw? What size fuse do i need |
Answer: | The outlet has zigzag ridges on the outside to grip an attached tube. With calipers I measured a max diameter of 1-5/32 inch or 29.5 mm, so the inner diameter of your tube should be a little less than that. |
Question: | What size outlet |
Answer: | I rather doubt it. The suction end measures 1 and 5/16 inches outer diameter. A gently heated inch and a quarter diameter tubing might go on it, but it sounds like you might still need some sort of adapter to reduce that further. Actually, while this works quite well, I think it will only work down to about the last quarter to half inch of water anyway. Take a close up look at the bottom end (furthest from the handle) of the unit. You should see the notches in the plastic end. They are about a quarter inch deep and put there to keep the suction end from sticking to whatever you are vacuuming. I hope this is what you needed to know. |
Question: | Is this a direct wire pump or does it have a cigarette lighter adapter |
Answer: | The outside diameter of the input nozzle is 1.25” at the narrower and the length is approx 1 “ |
Question: | La salida es 1"1/8 o |
Answer: | Yes, it floats. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can a secondary float switch be used with this unit |
Answer: | No, its a self contained unit. |
Question: | Can this pump fit sail flo sump box which came with 750 gpm pump |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | I can’t find a hose that fits over the outlet hole or inside it. The hose in boat is same size. What did you use |
Answer: | BEWARE folks telling you what size hose to use. This pump comes in several different models that look identical but have different flow rates and outlet hose sizes. I used the wisdom of amazon comments and promptly bought 3/4" -- the wrong size hose. Garden hose is way too small. My pump wasn't labeled on the body of the pump and came without instructions. My outlet port was 1 and 1/8 inches in diameter, NOT 3/4". Measure yours, don't just check the Q&A then buy something. On another site, I found some specifications, and the pump model A02-111001 uses a hose with a interior diameter of 29mm. That's about 1 and 1/8 inches. |
Question: | Can I use this in saltwater |
Answer: | Sure. It's a bilge pump. Many boats get salt water inside. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I see that this is meant to be battery powered. Is there any way to power it from the wall 110v |
Answer: | Yes if you buy a converter that will convert 110v ac to 12v dc. I use one in my garage. |
Question: | With 750 gph, the flow velocity would be insanely high out of the 3/4" outlet right? im calculating 540 feet per second. am i missing something |
Answer: | You are probably correct |
Question: | Is a check valve recommended? If so, how much does in restrict flow, and does it hurt the pump if flow restricted |
Answer: | I did not use a check valve as my vertical lift is less the 2’. They do make valves with little restrictions if you need to |
Question: | Is it fully submersible |
Answer: | Absolutely yes |

User questions & answers
Question: | It’s safe to use this pump in a spa |
Answer: | It pulls the water up and out in one motion. It is a very efficient and effective pump. It moves a lot of water at once and does a good job even when it is getting shallow in the boat. |
Question: | How long are the lead wires |
Answer: | The bottom end is the inlet/suck, the outlet is on the side and that is where the extension hose is attached as well to get the water out over the egde of your kayak. |
Question: | Can this pump be mounted any kind of way |
Answer: | 1.37lbs |

User questions & answers
Question: | can this pump be mounted vertically |
Answer: | I did not see the 5c listed when I received this as a gift last year. It never worked for me. Not sure if it was because of the model of my phone, or not. I wouldn't recommend this printer, though. |
Question: | How many gallons per hour |
Answer: | Yes, it's coming with ink cartridge and 36 papers. |
Question: | What size are the inlet and outlet connections |
Answer: | Me too! |
Question: | is there a rebuild kit for these ? I only need the diaphragm |
Answer: | If your door doesn't leak, why worry about it? Fix the door before you invest in Alpine speakers. Moisture might attack active electronic contact points, but you're likely to need a new car before they fail. |
Question: | So are these automatic or not? they say" automatic submersible/non-automatic marine |
Answer: | Three hole 6.5 speaker rim to replace a 6.5 in., 3 hole (or 4) speaker riim. Of course it'll fit, but what if you have to drill a couple of holes? So what. Great speaker -- better with a 5 or 6 band equalizer ( if you can find one, especially a Kenwood. That's the question. |
Question: | it shows two models offered, one round with no switch, and another, oval with an automatic float switch. Between the two models, is one more quiet |
Answer: | Alright Chris, well this is NASA now. To answer the gentleman’s question, if you’re mounting these in car doors, the airspace in the car doors will act like speaker enclosures. But, you better get a little bit of sound deadening material and bang some areas of your door, find rattles, and get them locked down with zip ties or duckt tape if you have to. I did that. |
Question: | will it fit on a older rule 1100 base |
Answer: | Not for sure |
Question: | does this really meet 1100GPH? At what height |
Answer: | They do not include grills. |
