13 best backcountry skis

Backcountry skis are a specialized type of skiing equipment designed for off-piste skiing, where skiers venture beyond the boundaries of groomed ski resorts into unmarked and potentially challenging terrain. These skis are engineered to provide versatility and performance in various snow conditions encountered in the backcountry. Here are key features and aspects related to backcountry skis:

  1. Design and Construction:

    • Width: Backcountry skis are often wider than traditional alpine skis to provide better floatation in deep snow.
    • Length: They are typically shorter than traditional skis for increased maneuverability in tight spaces.
    • Lightweight Construction: Backcountry skis are designed to be lightweight for ease of uphill travel during ascents.
  2. Bindings:

    • Tech or Pin Bindings: These bindings are commonly used in backcountry skiing as they allow for a free heel during uphill climbs and can be locked down for descents.
  3. Camber and Rocker:

    • Camber: Some backcountry skis have traditional camber for improved edge control and stability on packed snow.
    • Rocker: Others may have a rockered profile, where the tips and tails are elevated, enhancing floatation in powder.
  4. Construction Materials:

    • Core Materials: Often made of lightweight materials like foam or wood, contributing to the ski's overall weight.
    • Carbon Fiber and Kevlar: Used in some models to add strength and reduce weight.
  5. Sidecut and Turning Radius:

    • Sidecut: The amount the ski tapers from tip to waist to tail, affecting how easily the ski turns.
    • Turning Radius: The radius of the circle that the ski would naturally make during a turn.
  6. Skins:

    • Climbing Skins: Backcountry skiers use climbing skins on the base of their skis during ascents. These are fabric strips with a furry texture that provides traction against the snow.
  7. Versatility:

    • All-Mountain Capability: Backcountry skis are designed to perform well in various snow conditions, including powder, crust, and variable terrain.
  8. Compatibility with Boots:

    • Tech-Compatible Boots: Backcountry skis are often paired with boots that are compatible with tech bindings, allowing for efficient uphill travel.
  9. Brakes or Leashes:

    • Brakes: Some backcountry bindings have integrated brakes that deploy when the skier releases the bindings, preventing runaway skis.
    • Leashes: Used to secure skis to the skier's boots, especially in areas where losing a ski could be dangerous.

It's important for backcountry skiers to choose skis that match their skill level, the type of terrain they plan to explore, and the prevailing snow conditions. Additionally, proper safety gear, including avalanche safety equipment, is crucial when venturing into the backcountry.

User questions & answers

Question: Are these breakaway leashes
Answer: This strap is foldable, so you may let your children try it.
Question: Is this a single leash or a pair
Answer: I suppose it will be tough! I bought this one month ago and went ski when I received it immediately, but it didn’t break or scratch at all until now.
Question: not sure how the device goes thru the ring
Answer: The circumference of the 64oz Kleen Kanteen is 13.3” (pi times its diameter). If you’re the Salsa Anything Cage on the fork, a 15” strap is too short, but a 20” strap should work. I recommend the 20” nylon buckle—and purchase the nylon keepers if you have excess//but I don’t think there’ll be much. Good luck. https://www.voile.com/nylon-buckle-straps.html

SCARPA Maestrale RS Ski Boot

SCARPA

Product description

Scarpa is a family-owned company that's been designing mountain footwear from its home base in Asolo, Italy since 1938. So, it should come as no surprise that when Scarpa went to work redesigning one of its most successful alpine touring boots, it didn't just throw out what it's learned through the years to start from scratch, but built off a solid foundation to refine what's become one of the most reliable and versatile touring boots in the backcountry. On the surface, the revamped Maestrale RS Alpine Touring Boot doesn't appear to have a lot in common with the original Maestrale, but it's built on the same roomy 101mm last for comfort on the ascent and maintains much of the key features that have made the original Maestrale one of the most popular AT boots in the industry. Trimming weight from an already lightweight boot is no easy feat, but Scarpa was able trim over five ounces from each boot--while making the boot stiffer in the process. This is achieved by making the shell from a lightweight Grilamid and reinforcing it with Grilamid LFT, which uses long-strand carbon fiber to increase rigidity and keep weight to a minimum. The full Grilamid cuff is vented to let body heat escape and is backed by an OutDry waterproof, breathable membrane so snow doesn't work its way through to the liner when you're breaking trail through knee-deep powder or setting the bootpack up a narrow couloir. The original Maestrale certainly had its quirks--namely, a prone-to-freezing walk mode and hinged tongue that liked to break at inopportune situations--but the newest iteration of the Maestrale eliminates both these issues by overhauling both components. Replacing the old single-hinge tongue with a fixed split Pebax tongue gives the boot the progressive forward flex of a three-piece alpine boot, and the friction-free walk mode takes the 37-degree cuff rotation of the original Maestrale and dials it up to 60 degrees. And since the metal-on-metal mechanism is external, you won't have ..

  • Shell Material: Carbon Grilamid LFT [cuff] Grilamid [tongue] Pegax
  • Flex: 125
  • Last Width: 101mm
  • Buckles: 3
  • Lean Angle: 14 - 18
