13 best kayak pfd fishings
A kayak PFD (Personal Flotation Device) for fishing is a specialized life jacket designed for anglers who kayak. It is an essential piece of safety equipment for anyone engaging in kayak fishing, providing flotation and several features tailored to the needs of fishermen. Here's what you need to know about kayak PFDs for fishing:
Flotation: The primary function of a kayak PFD is to provide buoyancy and keep the wearer afloat in case of an accident or capsize. It is designed to provide adequate buoyancy while allowing freedom of movement for paddling and casting.
Comfort and Mobility: Kayak fishing PFDs are designed with comfort in mind. They typically have a low-profile design to minimize interference with paddling and casting. Many feature segmented foam panels that move with your body, providing a comfortable fit and allowing you to move your arms freely.
Pockets and Storage: Fishing-specific PFDs often come equipped with multiple pockets and compartments for storing fishing gear and accessories. This can include tackle boxes, pliers, lures, and other essentials. Some PFDs even have specialized attachment points or tool holders.
Attachment Points: To accommodate fishing gear and accessories, kayak PFDs may have attachment points, D-rings, or loops where you can secure items like fishing rods, whistles, or fishing tools. These attachments can help keep your gear easily accessible.
High Visibility: Safety is a top priority when kayak fishing, so many PFDs come in bright colors or have reflective elements to increase visibility on the water. This makes it easier for other boaters to spot you, especially in low-light conditions.
Adjustability: Kayak PFDs typically have adjustable straps and closures to ensure a secure and customized fit. It's essential to choose a PFD that fits snugly but comfortably to prevent it from riding up or shifting during use.
US Coast Guard Approval: When purchasing a kayak PFD, make sure it is US Coast Guard approved. This ensures that it meets safety standards and will provide adequate flotation in case of an emergency.
Ventilation: Fishing can be physically demanding, and kayak PFDs often incorporate ventilation features to help keep you cool and prevent overheating, especially in hot weather.
Buoyancy Rating: Different PFDs have varying levels of buoyancy, often measured in pounds or Newtons. Choose a PFD with sufficient buoyancy to support your body weight and any additional gear you may be carrying.
In summary, a kayak PFD for fishing is a specialized life jacket designed to meet the unique needs of kayak anglers. It provides essential flotation while offering comfort, mobility, storage options, and safety features tailored to fishing activities on the water. When kayak fishing, always wear a properly fitted and US Coast Guard-approved PFD to ensure your safety while pursuing your favorite pastime.

Product description
The Hi-Fi life jacket features a high-back design and is a perfect fit for a variety kayak seating systems. It has an easy front-zip design with two self-draining zippered pockets for storing essential items and a breathable mesh back and side panels for drainage and ventilation. Reflective piping and trim on front, back and shoulders make for improved visibility while the durable 200 denier nylon shell means this jacket will stand up to the Forces of nature.
Why a high back? If your kayak has a back rest or a lawn chair style seat a high back PFD generally offers a more comfortable experience because it minimizes the overlap between the PFD and the seat back itself. A full-length PFD is more likely to ride up in this situation.

Question: | im a big guy, 2x shirt and 300 lbs. would this fit ok or should i look elsewhere |
Answer: | I'm 6'5 and 275 and even I needed to pull the adjustment straps pretty tight. Definitely made for a larger person. |

Question: | How does is hold up to salt water |
Answer: | Hello, I am a big dude also. I am 6'2" @ 300 lbs. This vest fits me great and still has room to be let out even more if I decide to grab a cheesecake on the way to the lake. I use this PDF while kayaking . . once I have it on I forget I am wearing it. It is very comfy, and is not restrictive at all. My only complaint is that it gets warm while paddling. BUT, I am in north Texas . . so it is usually over 90 and humid. So I would imagine even a 'high end' pdf would feel warm. Go ahead and give this one a try if you are on the fence. You can always try it and return it if you aren't happy with it. Two chubby thumbs up from this big dude! |
Question: | is it full titanium or just titanium coated |
Answer: | There are 5 categories of PFDs, but most paddlers should use a Type III or V USCG-approved PFD. Type I: Offshore Life Jackets. These are geared for rough or remote waters where rescue may take a while. Though bulky, they have the most buoyancy, a bright color and can turn most unconscious people face up in the water.Type II: Near-shore Vests. Calm inland waters, where a fast rescue is likely, is the intent of these PFDs. They will turn some unconscious wearers to the face-up position but not all of them. They are bulky, but less so than Type I.Type III: Flotation Aids. These are suitable for most padders where there is a chance for a quick rescue. They offer freedom of movement and the most comfort for continuous wear. Type IIIs are designed so wearers can put themselves in a face-up position, but they may have to tilt their head back to avoid being face down in water.Type IV: Throwable Devices. Cushions or ring buoys are designed to be thrown to someone in trouble and provide backup to a PFD. They are not for nonswimmers, rough waters or the unconscious. The USCG does not require these for canoes or kayaks.Type V: Special-use Devices. These are specialized PFDs for specific activities. To be acceptable by the USCG, they must be used for the activity specified on the label. Varieties include kayaking, waterskiing, windsurfing, hybrid vests and deck suits. |
Question: | What is the size of the knife (inside the sheath)? Surely the product dimension listed, 8x9x10 inches, is wrong! That is the size of a basketball |
Answer: | I am 5' 10" and 248 and it fits me lower stomach , u should get a 2xl |
Question: | Does this knife come with a sheath |
Answer: | PFDs have side straps for enlarging/tightening. If you needed a bit more strap to fit around you, you could add a small strap (the same kind, with a buckle on the end). Actually, there are 2 straps on each side. This is a very good kayaking PFD. You should take a chance, as Amazon makes it easy to return items. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where is the size chart for this (usually it’s underneath the item sizes available in blue lettering you simply click on to view |
Answer: | There were no tools provided with the vest I received. I didn't expect tools. I assumed the tools shown were illustrations of how one might use the various compartments. |
Question: | Old town. why are these made in china. the mark up must be tremendous as chinese dont earn much. must be all about $$$$$$$. where is your patriotism |
Answer: | I'm 5'8" about 180 I have a large, It fit fine so I would go with the large |
Question: | Will you have this in grey in l/xl anytime soon |
Answer: | I am 5'0 with 34D bust, 118 lbs. I ordered a small for kayaking and love it, it fits perfect! Love it! |
Question: | Is there a sizing chart available for the old town pfds |
Answer: | I have used this for stand up paddle boarding. It's quite comfortable when paddling, but I have found that it makes getting on the paddle board from deep water slightly more challenging because it is a little bit bulker in the front and requires you to have slightly more arm strength than slimmer life vests. Given that, I still can get up on the board it just takes a bit more effort my daughter on the other hand is slimmer and doesn't seem to have as much difficulty getting back on the board. |
