Answer: Yes, the red light turns on initially. When you press the button again the light will turn off. The dim red light comes on first, if you want bright red, press the button again. If you press and hold the "on" button the the red light will turn on and then the dim white light. To get bright white light, press and hold the button until the dim white light is lit, then click again for bright light. It sounds confusing but I got used to it quickly.
