12 best hiking watches
Hiking watches, also known as outdoor or sport watches, are specialized timepieces designed to meet the needs of outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, and adventurers. These watches offer a range of features and functions to assist users in navigating, tracking performance, and ensuring safety in the great outdoors. Here are some key features and considerations related to hiking watches:
1. GPS and Navigation: Many hiking watches are equipped with built-in GPS functionality, allowing users to track their location accurately. GPS-enabled watches can display your current coordinates, record your route, and help you navigate with waypoints and breadcrumb trails. Some models also support maps and topographic data.
2. Altimeter: An altimeter measures altitude, which is crucial for hikers navigating varying terrains. It helps you track elevation changes, monitor ascent and descent rates, and can even provide weather forecasts based on atmospheric pressure.
3. Barometer: A barometer measures air pressure and can help predict weather changes. This feature is useful for monitoring weather conditions during a hike and getting early warnings of approaching storms.
4. Compass: A digital compass is an essential tool for orienteering and navigation. It can help you find your bearing and ensure you're heading in the right direction.
5. Heart Rate Monitor: Some hiking watches include a heart rate monitor, which is valuable for tracking your fitness level and monitoring your exertion during hikes or other outdoor activities.
6. Durability: Hiking watches are typically rugged and designed to withstand outdoor conditions. They are often water-resistant or even waterproof, with reinforced casings to protect against impacts.
7. Battery Life: Battery life can vary greatly among hiking watches. Consider the duration of your hikes and the availability of charging options when choosing a watch. Some models offer long battery life, while others may require more frequent recharging.
8. Wireless Connectivity: Many modern hiking watches can connect to smartphones via Bluetooth, allowing you to receive notifications, sync data with fitness apps, and access additional features.
9. User Interface: Ensure that the watch has an intuitive user interface that you are comfortable using, especially in outdoor conditions where ease of operation is crucial.
10. Price: Hiking watches come in a wide price range, so consider your budget when selecting a model. High-end watches tend to offer more advanced features and durability.
11. Size and Weight: The size and weight of the watch can impact comfort during long hikes. Choose a watch that suits your wrist size and personal preference.
Popular brands known for their hiking and outdoor watches include Garmin, Suunto, Casio, and Polar, among others. These brands offer a variety of models to cater to different outdoor activities and user needs.
Overall, a hiking watch can be a valuable tool for navigation, tracking performance, and safety during outdoor adventures, making it a worthwhile accessory for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you switch the output to ten digit grid format |
Answer: | Thanks for the question. To add to the great answer you already got, you could use the included clip to clip it to your hat, but you might find it a bit heavy if it's on your brim, for example. The Canmore Golf GPS attaches to the clip using a magnet, so it's possible to remove it when you're ready to check the yardage. Please let us know if you have further questions or comments at [email protected]. |
Question: | Does this provide both mgrs and lat/long |
Answer: | Have used it 4x since I bought it. Don’t know the magnet you are referring to. So far it’s doing great. Takes a long time to recharge. |
Question: | What is the onboard memory? And does it come with any topo maps |
Answer: | Thanks for the great question. The H-300 comes with a charging cord only. We recommend using a computer or laptop USB port to charge the device (using the included cable), since the power output is better regulated (5 volts). Phone chargers such as an iPhone charger can also be used but be sure to use a high quality charger that only provides 5v — some inexpensive 'fast charger' models, especially car chargers, can sometimes exceed 5v and damage your H-300. Lastly, always unplug the charging cable at both ends after use. Addicidental contact with conductive surfaces may damage the cable or charging port. Please let us know if you have further questions or comments at [email protected]. (Note that Amazon may not notify us when you reply here, so please use the email option if possible!) |
Question: | Would you recommend the Foretrex 601 for runners |
Answer: | In my case for a full season up north. Had about 60 rounds on the current batteries. The current batteries still working. I carry an extra in my bag just in case. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it leather stap |
Answer: | leather |
Question: | In case I want to have a different color band, how can I look for it, and is it easily replaced in case I want to use a different band each day |
Answer: | Search for "20mm band". That is the width of the original band due to the lug spacing of the watch. You *might* get away with an 18mm band but just stick with the original size so the band fills out the space between the watch lugs. Also pick up a "spring bar tool" to take off the old band. |
Question: | The black case is plactic or metallic |
Answer: | Heavy, solid metal - good watch for the money. Jack Lewis |
Question: | Will a 16-20MM band with work with this watch? Looking to replace the band |
Answer: | 20mm will work for sure, the watch has 20mm lugs. I used a NATO strap with mine in this width. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does it have Luminous light in the dark without using battery light |
Answer: | The hands glow if they get enough light. There is a light, but it only illuminates the face and not the digital readout. It's been fine for the times I've needed to see what time it was in the dark. |
Question: | Can the digital display be set for military time |
Answer: | It's hard to see but just outside the 1 -12 is the military time. 1 is 13 , 6is 18. I believe when you set up the digital side you can set it for military. Hope this was helpful . |
Question: | Does the bezel turn |
Answer: | Yes the one I have turns in both directions. |
Question: | How does one set the date/time/year ? The instructions are too difficult to follow and does not produce expected results |
Answer: | Here's a bit of an orientation. Put your watch down on the table. Note there are four buttons; "A" at 8 O'Clock is for selecting the mode or sub-mode. "B" at 10:00 is the indiglo light; we won't need it. "C" at 2:00 is the change value button. "D" at 4:00 is the "set"/"accept settings" button. There are two digital times you can set on this watch; the regular time and the second timezone (labelled T2). Hit the "Mode" button (A) until time OR date you want to change is displayed (the watch can be set to display either the digital time OR the date). Now press and hold the set/accept button (D); you'll see the word "Hold" appear. Hold the button down until the world "Hold" disappears. You are now setting the time and everything you do will be interpreted that way until you hit the set/accept button again to save your input.Notice that the seconds value in the time is flashing. IF you want to change the seconds, hit the "change value" button (C) to set them to zero. You can use this to synchronize the digital time on the watch *exactly* to another clock with a second hand.Hit the mode button (A) and the hour will start flashing. Press the change value button (C) until the correct hour appears. Repeat this sequence (hit the mode button, hit the change value button until the value is right) until you come back around to flashing seconds. Hit the "set" button (D) to accept all the values you just selected.Your watch is now set. Here's a bonus set of instructions. It's kind of useless to display the digital time if its the same as the analog hands, but you can set the display to show the date and day instead. Here's how you do it. Hit the mode button until the current time appears. Press the "change value" (C) button briefly. Note that the watch beeps, then then shows the day and date for a few seconds, then returns to the time. Now press and HOLD the change value button. After a few seconds displaying the day and date it will beep and you can release it. The watch will now show the day and date instead of the digital time. Whatver your watch is showing (day/date or time), a brief press of "C" will show the other. You can use this to check that the digital time is correct (e.g. after daylight savings time kicks in) so the correct date will show before and after midnight. |
