12 best mountain bike tubes
Mountain bike tubes are essential components of a bicycle's tire system. They play a crucial role in maintaining proper tire inflation and ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride for cyclists. Here's what you need to know about mountain bike tubes:
Purpose: Mountain bike tubes are inflatable rubber or latex tubes that sit inside the tire casing. They hold the air necessary to keep the tire rigid and support the weight of the rider and bike.
Materials: Mountain bike tubes are typically made from butyl rubber, which is a synthetic rubber compound known for its durability and resistance to punctures. Some high-end tubes are made from latex, which is lighter and more supple but less puncture-resistant.
Size: Mountain bike tubes come in various sizes to fit different tire dimensions. The size is usually indicated on the tube and corresponds to the tire size.Common sizes include 26 inches, 27.5 inches, and 29 inches, which correspond to the three primary wheel sizes for mountain bikes.
Valve Types: Mountain bike tubes have different valve types, with the two most common being Presta and Schrader valves:
- Presta Valve: These valves are slender and have a locknut at the top. They are commonly found on higher-end mountain bikes and are known for their higher pressure retention.
- Schrader Valve: Schrader valves are thicker and similar to those found on car tires. They are more common on entry-level mountain bikes.
Tube Thickness: Tubes come in various thicknesses, often referred to as the tube's wall thickness or gauge. Thicker tubes are more puncture-resistant but may add some weight to the bike. Thinner tubes are lighter but may be more prone to punctures.
Patch Kits: Cyclists often carry patch kits when riding to repair small punctures in their tubes. These kits include patches and adhesive to seal holes temporarily until the tube can be replaced.
Inflation Pressure: Each mountain bike tire has a recommended inflation pressure range, typically indicated on the tire sidewall. It's essential to maintain the proper tire pressure to optimize performance and reduce the risk of pinch flats or blowouts.
Tubeless Systems: In recent years, tubeless tire systems have gained popularity in mountain biking. These systems eliminate the need for inner tubes, relying on a special tire and rim combination with sealant to maintain airtightness. Tubeless setups can offer better traction and fewer punctures.
Maintenance: Regularly inspecting your tubes for damage, checking for proper inflation, and replacing them when necessary is crucial for a safe and enjoyable mountain biking experience.
Tube Selection: When selecting a tube for your mountain bike, consider factors like tire size, valve type, and the terrain you plan to ride on. Thicker tubes or those with added puncture protection may be a good choice for rough trails, while lighter tubes are suitable for smoother terrain.
In summary, mountain bike tubes are integral to the performance and safety of your bike. Choosing the right tube size, valve type, and thickness, along with proper maintenance, can help ensure a trouble-free riding experience.

Tube Size
First and foremost, you want to make sure the tube fits your tire. To determine the size you need to check the side wall markings on your tire where you’ll see two numbers separated by an 'X'. The first number refers to the tire’s diameter. The second number refers to the tires width. Select the tube that has the exact same diameter as your tire. Your tires width should fall into the range of widths listed on the tube packaging.
Valve Type
Standard (also called Schrader) valves are the most common valve type for bicycles. This short, sturdy valve is also used on car tires and other inflatables.
Presta valves are typically found on performance road and mountain bikes. They have built-in valve locks which you twist to open before inflating.
An easy way to remember is: 'S' is for Standard (Schrader, Short, Sturdy) and 'P' is for Presta (Performance, Premium).
All inflatable tubes are subject to deflation from mis-installation and certain hazards.
Flat Protection
Finally you’ll need to choose whether to go with a standard or self sealing tube. Standard tubes are fine for most riding conditions. Self sealing tubes have liquid sealant inside that provides an extra layer of flat protection by sealing holes up to 1/8 of an inch instantly while you ride. It doesn’t get much easier than that!

User questions & answers
Question: | Assuming the size is correct; will these work on E-Bikes? Is there a maxium weight limit |
Answer: | I bought 4 of them love them I got Med size about 15” long has extra packages on the sides very very cool.wish they would make different colors other than black! |
Question: | The product title states these are 700c tubes with 60mm valves. In the product description it states these are 650c tubes with 48mm valves. Which one |
Answer: | If you install them properly, they are Rock Solid and do not Move, Wobble or Shake. The Components are Pretty Heavy and Sturdy. They are not $150 - $400 Aero Bars, but for the Money you are getting a Darn Good Set of Aero Bars. Good Value. Good Bars for the Money. When you install them and have to use the Big Shims because you have the Narrow Bars, but they still move on you a little bit, the Clamps are Bottoming Out before they Clamp. In this Case, if they are tight but they Still Move a little, Loosen the Clamps and insert ONE of the Small Shims on Top of one of the Big Shims. (This is by far the easiest way to insert the Shims with the Clamps Loosely Bolted together) The Small Shim will not conform with the Bar but the Torque of the Bolts will Crush it in Place. Bear Down on the Bolts without Breaking Them and you are Rock Solid. |
Question: | Are these for mountain bikes |
Answer: | You have Handle Bars that are 1.5" Outside Diameter? That is Huge. If they are that Large, the Eyours Aero Bar's Handle Bar Clamps will open up that far with no Shims. You will just have a 3/8" Gap or so between the Front Clamp and the Back Clamp. You may have to buy some Longer Bolts and really bear down on them to get the Clamps to Conform to the Shape of your Bars. But it should work. If you run into Problems or you if you want your bars to Absolutely not move under any conditions, you can drill a small hole through the Clamps and the Handle Bars and Pin them with a Small Bolt and nut. I also put thicker Foam Padding on the Arm Rests. If you tinker with them a little bit, you will have a Heck of a Set of Aero Bars for $25.99. A real good Value. |
Question: | How long is the warrenty |
Answer: | Thank you for reaching out. We recommend going with the size Large. |
