14 best bike tubes
Bike Tubes are an essential component of a bicycle's tire and wheel system, playing a crucial role in maintaining proper tire pressure and ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride. Here's what you need to know about bike tubes:
Purpose: Bike tubes are inflatable rubber tubes that are inserted inside the tire casing of a bicycle wheel. They hold the pressurized air that supports the weight of the rider and the bike, providing cushioning and enabling the tire to grip the road or trail.
Materials: Bike tubes are typically made from butyl rubber, which is a synthetic rubber known for its air retention properties. Some high-performance tubes may use latex rubber, which is lighter but less puncture-resistant than butyl.
Sizes: Bike tubes come in various sizes to match the different tire sizes used on bicycles. It's essential to choose a tube that matches your tire size precisely. Common sizes include 26-inch, 27.5-inch, and 29-inch tubes for mountain bikes and various sizes for road bikes.
Valve Types: There are two primary valve types used in bike tubes:
Presta Valve: Also known as French valves, Presta valves are narrower and have a threaded shaft. They are commonly found on road bike tubes and high-performance mountain bike tubes.
Schrader Valve: Schrader valves are wider and similar to those found on car tires. They are commonly used on tubes for most mountain bikes and some hybrid or cruiser bikes.
Tube Thickness: Tubes come in different thicknesses, often referred to as wall thickness or gauge. Thicker tubes are more puncture-resistant but slightly heavier, while thinner tubes are lighter but may be more prone to punctures.
Puncture Protection: Some bike tubes come with added puncture protection layers to reduce the risk of flats. These are often marketed as "thorn-resistant" or "slime" tubes and are a good choice for riders in areas with a lot of debris on the road or trails.
Installation: To install a bike tube, you must first remove the tire from the wheel rim. Once the tire is off, insert the tube inside the tire and ensure it's evenly distributed. Carefully reseat the tire on the rim and inflate the tube to the recommended pressure, which is usually printed on the tire sidewall.
Maintenance: It's essential to check your bike tubes regularly for signs of wear, damage, or low pressure. Keeping your tubes properly inflated can prevent pinch flats and improve the overall ride quality.
Replacement: Bike tubes can wear out over time or become damaged. If you experience frequent flats or notice visible damage to your tube, it's time to replace it. Always carry a spare tube and the necessary tools for on-the-go repairs when cycling.
In summary, bike tubes are vital components of a bicycle's tire system, providing the necessary air pressure to support the rider and bike. Understanding the different types, sizes, and valve options will help you choose the right tube for your specific cycling needs. Regular maintenance and proper installation can extend the life of your bike tubes and enhance your riding experience.

Tube Size
First and foremost, you want to make sure the tube fits your tire. To determine the size you need to check the side wall markings on your tire where you’ll see two numbers separated by an 'X'. The first number refers to the tire’s diameter. The second number refers to the tires width. Select the tube that has the exact same diameter as your tire. Your tires width should fall into the range of widths listed on the tube packaging.
Valve Type
Standard (also called Schrader) valves are the most common valve type for bicycles. This short, sturdy valve is also used on car tires and other inflatables.
Presta valves are typically found on performance road and mountain bikes. They have built-in valve locks which you twist to open before inflating.
An easy way to remember is: 'S' is for Standard (Schrader, Short, Sturdy) and 'P' is for Presta (Performance, Premium).
All inflatable tubes are subject to deflation from mis-installation and certain hazards.
Flat Protection
Finally you’ll need to choose whether to go with a standard or self sealing tube. Standard tubes are fine for most riding conditions. Self sealing tubes have liquid sealant inside that provides an extra layer of flat protection by sealing holes up to 1/8 of an inch instantly while you ride. It doesn’t get much easier than that!

User questions & answers
Question: | Are the valve stems threaded or smooth |
Answer: | when in doubt, slightly smaller diameter tubve is fine, you might have to pump the tube a little more which is a fine trade off for the weight savings imo. if your rim is presta drilled only then dont buy a shrader valve. i like shader valves because they work fine and its just less to mess with but presta,, they aight |
Question: | My 700x20-25 has 48mm Presta Valve, can I use a different presta valve size |
Answer: | This has nothing to do with the bike but rather with the wheel or more specifically with depth of the wheel. If you wheel is X mm deep you will need at least X +15 mm long valve. Example: you wheel rim is 25mm deep. You will want tube with at least 40mm valve. Longer is OK but at some point it will impair the aesthetics. |
Question: | Are these tube Co2 combatibility |
Answer: | Yes. I just put these in my 25x700 and they fit. |
Question: | are the valve stems 60mm or 80mm |
Answer: | I found the same problem and had to buy it from a different source in order to be sure I was getting the correct size. It’s an amazon problem. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What size the Weight of this tube |
Answer: | It’s not magic, you will eventually need to check pressure and top up air. I have used Slime as a sealant for years (though given time it will go through paint and rust steel wheels). It seals small leaks and punctures very well. My problem with these particular tunes was the quality of the tube itself. Every one I tried failed on initial inflation or within a few hours. |
Question: | What is the weight of this tube |
Answer: | It's always good to check the rim where the spokes are attached to make sure nothing sharp is sticking up, but you shouldn't have to put additional tape on. Tubes are twice as heavy, but for what I use this bike for, hauling stuff to our boat, weight doesn't matter. |
Question: | dose this fit a 20x1.50 bike |
Answer: | I have not had any issues with the ones on my bike leaking since I put them on. I too had purchased another brand from a retail store and they leaked too, so I switched to these and had no more problems. |
Question: | Is there any reason this couldn't be used on a plastic Rubbermaid garden cart wheel |
Answer: | Try it and see, lol ;) |

Question: | Is the 60mm stem adequate lenght for 50mm deep carbon wheels |
Answer: | These are threaded. |
Question: | Will these work with my rims (axis sport disc) and tires (specialized espoir sport, 60tpi, wire bead, double blackbelt protection, 700x28mm |
Answer: | Are you asking if the valve on these tubes are removable and you can add a longer or shorter presta valve to the tube? If so no. If you need it longer for deeper wheels you can buy an extension piece for the valves or longer presta valves with tubes. Amazon has it all. |
Question: | Do these actually have the shouldered stem nut as pictured on the box |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Is this the right inner tube? my bike has a (700x32c) (32-622) 28x15/8x |

Question: | will theese fit a 60 mm wheel ? lots say they will but dont stick out far enough to get a pump on |
Answer: | It does not have a center stand. It has two stands mounted on the bottom. The tv is 36 inches across the bottom and stands cover 5 inches each. They are stationed between 22 and 32 inches. So in order for the tv to sit on something it has to be at least 32 inches wide |

Product description
This Continental Road Race inner tube comes with a short valve, and is up to the standard of the rest of Continental's inner tube products. Getting stuck out in the wilderness - or anywhere for that matter - with a flat tire can be devastating and will often cut a good ride short. Carrying a spare inner tube, such as the Continental Race Road, can be a lifesaver.
- Short (42mm) valve
- Valve core: Removable
- Threaded valve stem
