10 best road bike tires

Road bike tires are a crucial component of a road bicycle, impacting the overall performance and ride quality. Here are some key points about road bike tires:

  1. Tire Types:

    • Road bike tires come in various types, including clincher, tubular, and tubeless.
    • Clincher tires are the most common, with a bead that hooks onto the rim and requires an inner tube.
    • Tubular tires are less common and involve gluing the tire onto the rim; they are favored by professional cyclists for their lightweight and supple nature.
    • Tubeless tires are becoming increasingly popular, offering the advantage of reduced flats and improved rolling resistance.
  2. Tire Size:

    • Road bike tire size is typically measured in millimeters (e.g., 700x23c or 700x25c), where the first number represents the tire's diameter and the second indicates its width.
    • Wider tires (e.g., 25c or 28c) offer more comfort and improved traction on rough roads, while narrower tires (e.g., 23c) tend to be faster but less comfortable.
  3. Tread Pattern:

    • Road bike tires generally have minimal tread patterns or are completely slick to reduce rolling resistance on smooth road surfaces.
    • Some all-season or gravel-specific tires may have a bit of tread for better grip on variable surfaces.
  4. Pressure:

    • Proper tire pressure is essential for performance and safety. It affects rolling resistance, comfort, and handling.
    • Tire pressure is typically measured in PSI (pounds per square inch) or bar.Road bike tire pressures often range from 80-120 PSI, depending on tire size and rider preference.
  5. Materials and Construction:

    • Road bike tires are constructed using various materials, including rubber compounds and casing layers.
    • High-quality tires often use advanced rubber compounds to optimize grip and durability.
    • The casing layers can be made of nylon, cotton, or a combination of materials, contributing to the tire's suppleness and ride quality.
  6. Puncture Resistance:

    • Many road bike tires are designed with puncture-resistant features, such as Kevlar belts or thicker sidewalls, to reduce the likelihood of flats.
  7. Riding Conditions:

    • The choice of road bike tire depends on the riding conditions. For wet or winter riding, you may prefer tires with better grip.
    • For racing, lightweight and fast-rolling tires are typically favored.
    • For endurance or long-distance riding, comfort and durability become more important considerations.
  8. Maintenance:

    • Regular maintenance includes checking tire pressure, inspecting for cuts or wear, and ensuring proper installation to minimize the risk of flats and improve tire longevity.

In summary, road bike tires come in various types, sizes, and constructions, allowing cyclists to choose the right combination that suits their riding style and conditions. Proper tire selection and maintenance are essential for a safe and enjoyable cycling experience.

User questions & answers

Question: x23 vs 700x25, what's the difference and which is faster
Answer: Define lo que es cubierta con cámara , puedes elegir entre cual llevar . En cuanto a la denominación factor decisivo pienso que es porque solo se puede llevar con cámara . A la otra puedes usarla de ambas maneras.
Question: Kinda Stupid Question but...Does this include BOTH tires
Answer: In short, yes. Search for "sheldon brown tire sizing" to get all the details. TL;DR - There is no such thing as a "700x28" tire. That designation is incomplete. You need the "c", which is actually associated with the 700, not the 28, even though it is often written as "700x28c", for example. People often refer to "28c" tires, etc., but it isn't really helpful to include "c" there, often leading people, usually Americans unfamiliar with the metric system, to think of 28 centimeters. "700c" is equivalent to ETRTO 622 mm bead seat diameter. In recent times, the most confusing use of this style of naming is with so-called "650" wheels/tires. It used to refer to 650c sizing used for time trial bikes, recumbents and small sized or women's road bikes, and is equivalent to ETRTO 571 mm bead seat diameter. These days, when people say "650" they actually mean "650b", which is ETRTO 584 mm bead seat diameter, used on all sorts of bikes these days, usually to accommodate fatter tires while having an effective tire diameter similar to a "700c" with skinnier tires. Personally, I prefer tire sizing like 28-622 (equivalent to 700x28c) because the numbers are actually meaningful, describing the width and bead seat diameter in millimeters. The "700" number used to be meaningful, but not really anymore. The 28 number is meaningful in describing the width, but gets obscured when referred to as "28c", which could refer to a 650x28c or 700x28c tire, while 28-571 or 28-622 are unambiguous.
Question: If I mount the tire to rotate in the reverse direction, will I travel backwards in time
Answer: these are priced as singles, the price would be the same anyway. You should be able to put 2 in your cart.
Question: Will these tires help me get laid
Answer: I can only speak to the 28mm tires, I have not tried other widths. In my experience the (28mm) 5000 tires are much narrower than the 4000s II 28mm tires. You'll see a review from me on Aug 29, 2019 that shows the difference between the two 28mm tires. Whether or not the difference matters is a personal preference for the most part.

Continental Gatorskin Tire

The Continental Gatorskin is the ultimate training & racing tire where puncture protection is a priority. Using the latest proprietary technology against flats the Gatorskin range uses PolyX Breaker and DuraSkin sidewall protection.

The Gatorskin tire is made for the long haul. Backed by PolyX Breaker, a tried and true puncture protections system and the DuraSkin anti-cut fabric turn the Gatorskin into a true long distance runner.

DuraSkin - the ultimate sidewall

Tires with DuraSkin sidewall protection have to be able to roll with the punches. They are used under the harshest conditions. On messenger bikes, the tires skid along curbs; on touring bikes, they cross continents without wearing out. During races, they have to endure tough tests such as the Paris-Roubaix. The high-quality polyamide fabric protects the tire casing against the worst conditions. These tires stand out thanks to their signature brown sidewalls.

PolyX Breaker - proven technology

Continental's PolyX Breaker brings their car expertise to the bicycle tire segment. Polyester has been used successfully for years in Continental's car tires and been tried and tested many times. The extremely resistant polyester fiber is woven tightly crosswise. In this way, a very high fabric density is reached which not only makes the Breaker more resistant to foreign objects but is also especially resistant to punctures. This protection is accomplished without affecting rolling resistance.

Gatorskin for every rider

The ever popular, tried and true Gatorskin is available in wire bead and folding versions that span a wide variety of tire sizes. Designed for commuting, touring, or heavy training - the Gatorskin will not let you down.

User questions & answers

Question: What pressure do they inflate too
Answer: No. This is per tire.
Question: Does the tire have Puncture Protection
Answer: Just so we're clear. All of this dialogue is relevant. However, I want to point out that if you mount the the 700x32c's onto a unicycle it will be possible to ride wheelies. However you have been warned, a phenomenon that will inevitably rotate around your axle's axis and the tires stand still...they honestly brake that well! The first time this happened I fell off. It's definitely something to get use to.
Question: It's tubeless
Answer: It kinda depends. I have a tandem bike which I installed them on and the person I was riding with noticed them and got very excited and yes I got laid very quickly. Same thing happened with the next person to ride with me. I normally get laid 20 plus times per set but you must have a tandem bike. From my experience the answer is yes.

User questions & answers

Question: Would someone be so kind and measure what's the width and height (from top of rim) of an inflated 700x28c tire
Answer: These tires will inflate to a maximum of 120PSI. You may find if you are a heavier rider, you may want to pump them up to only 100PSI or 105PSI, as they will feel rock hard at that pressure.
Question: Are these different from he Hardshell tires? If so, how
Answer: No, just a regular tire. I'd consider it in the medium range for puncture resistance - I use tire liners which work well with these tires. https://amzn.to/2FTy93F
Question: Are 700x25c the same as 700x25mm
Answer: Not tubeless. This is an inner tube tire!
Question: Are these the kevlar folding type or metal bead type? The picture shows folding but the description says metal bead
Answer: The 25 is 2 mm wider. Both sizes will work on the same rims. There is a definite trend in the last year or two to put slightly wider tires on road bikes. In fact I think that many bike shops and tire manufacturers are trying to get rid of their 23 mm inventory. I think this is a very good thing. The 25 will probably be as fast (some claim faster) than the 23. More importantly, you can run slightly lower pressure, which gives you a slightly softer, more comfortable ride. Also, because you have a little more rubber on the road, you will have a more secure footing on sandy or wet pavement. You may also be slightly less likely to flat as well, with the 25. As soon as I wear out the 23 mm tires I have on my Ridley Noah, I will be putting on 25 mm tires.I would most definitely recommend the 700x25.

User questions & answers

Question: my tire says32-622 and 700x32cx28 so what is the size I need
Answer: Sounds like a question about clearance. On my bike (Fulcrum rim) the Gatorskin 700x28 height above the rim is 27mm and the width is 28mm inflated to 95psi. My bike came w/ 25's and newer models are coming w/ 28's so I took a chance and they fit. If you know someone with this tire on their bike, they might let you swap the front tire just to do a quick clearance check.
Question: What de differences beetwen 700c x 25mm and 700 x 25mm? Thanks
Answer: I suppose that by "hard-shell" you mean the type of tire that doesn't come folded up in a box. There is no difference as far as the tire goes except that the lip that clasps on to the rim does not have a wire in it. The tire is designed so that it clasps on to the rim securely with out the need for the wire. Otherwise, there is no difference.
Question: Says they come in 700 x 32inch but Continental says they only make them in 23mm, 25mm and 28mm widths, what is 32-inch
Answer: Yes, same size.
Question: Are these tires using a folding kevlar bead or a wire bead? It says foldable tire in one section and wire bead at checkout
Answer: Folding Bead, NOT metal bead.

The Benchmark in puncture protection

Vectran is a synthetically manufactured high-tech fiber from a natural model. Like spider silk, Vectran is a liquid-crystalline polymer (LCP). Vectran is spun from the melted liquid polymer Vectra and processed further to a multi-strand thread. Spider silk like Vectran has an enormous tear resistance at a very low weight: Exactly the right properties to process into a premium Continental bicycle tire as a puncture protection insert. A Vectran Breaker is lighter, more flexible and protects more effectively against cuts than the comparable nylon breaker. Vectran Breaker does not adversely affect the rolling resistance.

User questions & answers

Question: Are this the G2.0 tires as pictured
Answer: 32mm. that is to say 700 x 32C will work perfectly
Question: Are these tires hard to mount in deeper rims
Answer: none. different ways to say the same thing.
Question: What is max air pressure
Answer: Gotta be an error .. 23mm, 25mm, and 28mm are all standard tire sizes .. 28mm is a little over an inch in size, so 32-inch has got to be a typo ..
Question: What type of tires? All season, race, dry, wet
Answer: Thankfully, folding kevlar bead! I've been riding with these for the last two years. I replace my rear tire 2-3 times before I replace the front. I'm now riding about 150 commuting miles a week so the rear change is expensive given the price. But I find it's well worth it. 2 years (approx. 15,000 miles) and only 2 flats! Granted that is on fairly clean surfaces. Good luck.

User questions & answers

Question: Are these tubeless tires
Answer: Yes, the are manufactured in Germany. Thank you.
Question: Will these tires fit on a 700cx23 50mm carbon rim
Answer: I’ve riden 100’s of miles in the rain on my road bike with Conti Gator Gardshell 25’s without traction issues, so they do the job. Supposedly, Conti’s 4-Season tires are the best for wet traction but I had problems with flats.
Question: I got on my bike 700/28c will these tires fit my bike and one more question you get Two packs for
Answer: My. buddy rode his Continentals until the threads started showing through the tread. I would not recommend that. Conti's have a "thread" pattern on the sidewalks however. I would check the sidewalks for cracks and the tread for thin spots or uneven wear. Also for small punctures or tears that don't result in flats. Replace if any of those conditions. I wouldn't trust a worn tire on a 35-40mph descent.
Question: what is the psi range for the tires
Answer: The "hard shell" is one of the most enduring road tires that Continental makes. It is built with bead to bead protection of DuraSkin® and an extra wide PolyX Breaker. The added material under the tread strip improves mileage and puncture protection. Wired implies there is a small wire around the circumference of the tire; it cannot be folded. Beaded is like thick rubber and can be folded; this is good if you want to travel with tires. I usually buy the wire because it's cheaper and I don't travel with extra tires. I have never had a wire bead puncture my inner tube. This Gator Hardshell performs! I have ridden 8,000 miles with NO FLATS on these tires. They are amazing. They are tough to install, but you only have to install them once a season. I am a girl, and I can get them on my rims...
Question: Are these tires actually manufactured in Germany
Answer: Correct
Question: How is the wet weather traction on these tires
Answer: Difficult but not impossible. Tire tools, windex as a lube and strong hands.
Question: How can you tell when the tires are nearing replacement
Answer: Maximum air pressure as printed on the side of the tire is 130 psi.
Question: What is the difference between "hard shell," "bead," and "wired?" I have heard of the later two but not "hard shell." Also, are these easy to install
Answer: These are all season tires that have substantial wet grip.
