4 best bike chain lubes
Bike chain lubes are essential products used for the maintenance and care of bicycle chains. Proper lubrication of the chain is crucial to ensure smooth and efficient cycling, reduce friction and wear, and prolong the life of the chain. Here's what you need to know about bike chain lubes:
Types of Bike Chain Lubricants:
Wet Lubricants: These lubricants are designed for use in wet and rainy conditions. They provide excellent protection against water and are long-lasting. However, they can attract dirt and require more frequent cleaning.
Dry Lubricants: Dry lubes are formulated for dry and dusty conditions. They are typically less viscous and dry quickly, leaving a dry, wax-like coating on the chain. Dry lubes are less likely to attract dirt but may require more frequent reapplication.
All-Purpose Lubricants: These lubes are versatile and work well in a variety of conditions, making them a popular choice for many cyclists. They offer a balance between wet and dry lubes.
Application Methods:
Drip Bottles: Most chain lubes come in drip bottles for easy and precise application. You apply the lube directly to the chain while turning the pedals.
Spray Cans: Some lubes are available in aerosol spray cans, which can be convenient for covering the chain evenly. However, they may require more care to avoid overspray.
Wax-Based Lubricants: Wax-based lubes are applied by melting the wax and immersing the chain in it. They offer a clean and dry coating, but the application process can be more involved.
Lube Characteristics:
Viscosity: The viscosity of a lube determines how thick or thin it is. Wet lubes tend to be thicker, while dry lubes are thinner. The choice of viscosity depends on the riding conditions and personal preferences.
Longevity: Some lubes are designed to last longer between applications, while others require more frequent reapplication. Choose a lube that suits your riding habits.
Self-Cleaning: Some lubes are formulated to help repel dirt and grime, making them easier to clean.
Maintenance Tips:
Before applying lube, make sure the chain is clean and free from dirt and old lube. Use a degreaser or a chain cleaning tool to clean the chain if necessary.
Apply the lube evenly to the entire length of the chain while turning the pedals. Allow it to penetrate for a few minutes.
Wipe off any excess lube with a clean cloth to prevent a build-up of grime.
Regularly inspect your chain for wear and listen for unusual noises while riding. Reapply lube as needed.
Environmental Considerations:
- Be aware of the environmental impact of the lube you choose. Some eco-friendly lubes are formulated with biodegradable and non-toxic materials.
Bike chain lubes are a critical component of bike maintenance, ensuring that your chain operates smoothly and efficiently while extending its lifespan. The type of lube you choose depends on your riding conditions and preferences, so it's essential to select the right one for your needs.

User questions & answers
Question: | Why is 8 oz cheaper than 4 oz |
Answer: | Because they are paying you to help them avoid storage costs. Sort of like negative oil prices. Or more like exactly negative oil prices. |
Question: | Will overspray harm tire rubber or carbon frames |
Answer: | It hasn't bothered my tires, I wipe excess off, if I could afford a carbon fiber bike I would know the answer to that question |
Question: | How do you use this? I’m new to bikes |
Answer: | Put your bike in a stand so you can spin backwards. Protect the floor(you are going to be dripping dirty oil). Back pedal (by hand), and slowly drip Finish Line onto the chain while it is running. Do this until the entire chain looks wet. Then keep running for a bit longer to work the oil in. Then, using a rag or paper towel, gently grab the chain while still pedaling backwards by hand. Watch that you do not get the rag caught up in the sprockets. Do not get your fingers caught up in the sprockets, or any other body part. It will hurt. Consider nitryl gloves, as chain dirt is really dirty. I usually repeat this 3 times every 100 miles. It will save your chain. Change out your chain when it reaches 1/8" (3mm) stretch to save your sprockets. Watch utube videos on chain cleaning and bike maintenance. Keep up on it and your bike will last 30 or 40 years or more. |
Question: | For a recreational cyclist, is this or the Finish Line dry lube better |
Answer: | This stuff is the thin liquid oil that flashes out some dirt and then stays on the chain to lubricate it. It will remain on the chain even after some water gets on it as oil repels water. Dry lube is different. To use dry lube first you must clean the chain. Then apply dry lube. Dry lube does not last as long and does not resist water But it also does not attract dirt lie oil does. If you clean the cain every 100 miles or every week and there is no rain, dry lube is good. This 1-step is for those wanting to get the job done and not mess with their chain so often. Most cyclists would have 2 or 4 different kinds of chain lube and use one when they are in a hurry (this one is good for that) and another for when they have 30 minutes or an hour to do a full de-grease and tooth-brush cleaning and lube. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could i use the bike wash on my disk brakes without ruining them? (is it oil based |
Answer: | I don't know why they asked me. I didn't buy the degreaser. |
Question: | Can I use the degreaser for the Shifters mechanism |
Answer: | It seems to do that to a degree but it really makes a mess on my chain. I use a different brand wet lub for rainy conditions and that causes some build up on the chain and pulleys but the WD40 lub is much worse and difficult to clean off. |
Question: | Does anyone know if the All-Conditions Lube work to repel water |
Answer: | A rusted bike chain should be replaced. It is beyond maintenance/serviceability and may accelerate wear on other parts of your drivetrain. |
Question: | Does this help for a rusted bike chain |
Answer: | These press-on nails design for little girls above the age of 5. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Whats the best way to apply this? Dirt and grime seems to be sticking to the chain |
Answer: | Yes. 42 & 43 both take the same sights. |
Question: | Is this solvent based at all |
Answer: | These will work on a 43. Most if not all sights made for a 42 also state they are for a 43 as well. |
Question: | Could finish line wet lubricant be used to lube freehub bearings |
Answer: | I had same problem and called Truglo. They sent me a replacement screw Item # 3228-00-0000001 HRDWR PK GLOCK .080 and there is no charge from Truglo. It is smaller and when I installed it there was no more movement on the sight. FYI mine was a GEN3 even though it says GEN$ it worked on mine. |
Question: | Does it have a noticeable odor? I have used another brand of lube, one that has a strong perfumed smell, kind of like grandpa's aftershave |
Answer: | you would probably need to go to the truglo website to get the definitive answer. In general, the high set is for the bigger calibers such as the .45 or the 10mm. The low set is for the 9mm, .40, etc. |
