14 best auto belays
Auto belays are safety devices used in the context of climbing and outdoor recreation, specifically in climbing gyms or on climbing walls. They play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of climbers during both training and recreational climbing activities. Here are key points about auto belays:
Functionality: Auto belays are mechanical devices designed to automatically and gradually release climbing rope as a climber ascends a route. In the event of a fall or descent, the auto belay controls the descent speed and safely lowers the climber to the ground.
Safety Harness Integration: Climbers wear a safety harness that is attached to the auto belay device via a secure connection. This harness is an essential part of the safety system, providing a point of attachment for the climber.
Elimination of Belay Partners: Unlike traditional belaying methods where a human belayer manages the rope for the climber, auto belays operate without the need for a belay partner. This allows climbers to engage in solo climbing activities or practice routes independently.
Suitability for Various Climbers: Auto belays are suitable for climbers of different skill levels, from beginners to advanced. They provide a controlled descent for climbers who may be practicing, training, or simply enjoying a recreational climb.
Adjustable Descent Speed: Many auto belay systems feature adjustable descent speeds. Climbers, or facility operators, can set the descent speed based on the climber's preference or the specific requirements of a climbing route.
Usage in Climbing Gyms: Auto belay systems are commonly found in climbing gyms as they offer a versatile and efficient way for individuals to climb without the need for a belay partner. This accessibility makes climbing more approachable for a broader range of people.
Training and Skill Development: Auto belays are valuable tools for training and skill development. Climbers can focus on specific techniques, work on endurance, or attempt challenging routes without the logistical constraints of having a belay partner.
Emergency Brake Systems: Auto belay devices are equipped with emergency brake systems that engage in the event of a sudden or unexpected fall. This adds an extra layer of safety to the climbing experience.
Regular Inspection and Maintenance: To ensure safety, auto belay systems require regular inspection and maintenance. Climbing gym staff or facility operators are typically responsible for ensuring that the devices are in proper working condition.
Auto belays contribute to making climbing more accessible, allowing individuals to enjoy the sport independently. They are a crucial component of climbing safety, providing an effective means of protection for climbers engaged in a variety of activities on climbing walls.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you Ascend Freely? Also will it stop you from falling |
Answer: | It will not ascend with a 12mm rope. It has an anti panic cam that, unfortunately, locks in when you try to ascend. It descends wonderfully, will not ascend on larger rope....if any. Also, it DOES stop completely, with no creep. And I am 225+ gear. |
Question: | Can it be used in gear for fire fighters, will iy withstand some heat |
Answer: | Generally speaking, keeping away from fire is more important! We tested it on 80ft drop at speed of 1ft / s for 3 times, Observed maximum temperature increase was 58deg Fahrenheit, 69F outside temp, 127F the descender temp. From the results, the faster the decline, the higher the temperature. I found nylon and polyester ropes have a melting point about 450F on the technical website, Some information Tom Jones sent stated the maximum usable temperature should be 194F Conclusion: From the data, it seems unlikely Descender can generate enough heat to damage the rope when stopped if the melting point is used but we shouldn't follow this. Using the limit Tom provided on a hot day (100+ F) it probably possible to reach the limit, but you'd have been going very fast. At the same time we do not approve of dropping more than 330ft uninterruptedly Repeat once more: keep the rope away from the fire! |
Question: | Is there a weight limit to this |
Answer: | Yes, the max weight limit is 900 pounds. |
Question: | Can’t seem to figure out how to tighten up the slack in the rope. It wants to lock up every time I try to pull on it |
Answer: | This device is not designed to be used as an ascent device. It’s just as hard to pull in slack as it is for the line to run out when descending. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How does this work? Does it latch or does it slow your decent? Does it only engage when pulled quickly? Is there something to absorb shock |
Answer: | It only stops you when pulled quickly. It comes with nothing to absorb shock. It works exactly like a seat belt. |
Question: | Is this designed for horizontal use? or it has to be anchored overhead |
Answer: | In Fall Arrest applications, anchorage connection point must always be at or above harness dorsal D-ring. You can work horizontally, but the anchor point needs to be above your back D-Ring. Note this is a relatively short SRL compared 30 ft to 100 ft SRL's that swing falls are more common, but you must always account for. Prior to installation or use, make considerations for eliminating or minimizing all swing fall hazards. Swing falls occur when the anchor is not directly above the location where a fall occurs. Always work as close to in line with the anchor point as possible. |
Question: | is this shock absorbing |
Answer: | The breaking mechanism inside the housing of the unit acts as a shock absorber to limit the arresting force. It also has a shock absorbing pack above the snap hook attached to the webbing. The shock pack will not even deploy 9 times out of 10, but it's there as kind of a back up safety valve, where if your webbing gets snagged on something the shock pack will deploy and arrest the fall forces. I'm fairly certain the extra shock pack is also there for users over 310 lbs., because these units are rated at 310 lbs, but clearly states may be used for up to 420 lb person if used with a harness & other components rated the same. So, yes, it actually has two, but the breaking mechanism inside the housing is going to be the energy absorber that will arrest a fall in the vast majority of any accidents. FYI: These work kinda of like a seat belt, when a fall occurs the lanyard stops usually with 15 inches, even though it has a higher maximum fall arresting distance, which you do have to account for, even if the SRL catches you with 15 inches or less most of the time. |
Question: | Would this work for a rock wall |
Answer: | Not if you're going to be using it for rock climbing. It is not an auto-belay device |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this come with a carabiner |
Answer: | Hi there. No, this does not come with a carabiner. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out. All the best! |
Question: | does it require a certain carabiner |
Answer: | Yes, it requires a "pear-shaped" HMS locking carabiner. With the bigger end of the carabineer clipped into the pilot and the smaller end on your harness. Need the bigger end of the pear shape so the pilot can freely slide. |
Question: | Is 8 mm to small to use |
Answer: | I haven't had any issues with smaller ropes. The smaller the rope the less friction the auto locking function will have but it still works. |
Question: | which carabiners with triple lock mecanism is compatible with the atc pilot? tks |
Answer: | I bought the Mad Rock Hulk HMS Triple Locking Carabiner and it works great! I think any carabiner that has a big gate opening (20 something mm or more) is gonna work awesome. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the point of two rope slots |
Answer: | Double roping. But also a spare when one side gets worn smooth (mine is almost completely smooth, after 3 years of hard use). But mainly for double-rope technique (highly recommended). This is a great ATC, but I will buy the "Guide" model, with its extra ring, next time, for remote belay technique (especially useful for ice). |
Question: | Will this work with oplux |
Answer: | The specs say it goes down to 7.7 mm, so it "should" work on 8 mm Oplux. Depends on what you are doing though. IMO, single rope belay or rappel on that thin a rope would be too hard to control. |
Question: | What's the loop made of is it cable or aluminum |
Answer: | Cable |
Question: | Does this come with a carabineer |
Answer: | No it does not come with a carabiner. If you need a carabiner then the Black Diamond Big Air XP package is what you want. |
