13 best petzl climbing ropes

Petzl is a well-known brand in the outdoor and climbing industry, and they offer a range of climbing equipment, including climbing ropes. Here's what you need to know about Petzl climbing ropes:

  1. Variety of Ropes: Petzl manufactures various types of climbing ropes designed for different purposes. These ropes can include single ropes, half ropes, and twin ropes. The choice of rope depends on the type of climbing and the specific requirements of the route.

  2. Single Ropes: Single ropes are the most common type of climbing rope and are used for a wide range of climbing activities, including sport climbing, trad climbing, and indoor climbing. Petzl's single ropes are designed for durability and safety.

  3. Half Ropes: Half ropes, also known as double ropes, are used in situations where the route traverses or has sharp edges. Climbers typically use two half ropes to reduce rope drag and minimize the risk of damage from abrasion or cutting.

  4. Twin Ropes: Twin ropes are designed to be used as a pair, and they offer additional safety in case one of the ropes gets damaged during a climb. They are often used in alpine and mountaineering scenarios.

  5. Diameter and Length: Petzl climbing ropes come in various diameters and lengths to suit different climbing styles and preferences. Thicker ropes are generally more durable, while thinner ropes are lighter and easier to handle.

  6. Dynamic and Static: Climbing ropes are categorized as dynamic or static. Dynamic ropes are designed to stretch to absorb the energy of a fall, reducing the impact force on the climber and protection points. Static ropes, on the other hand, do not stretch and are typically used for rigging and rescue operations.

  7. Safety Standards: Petzl climbing ropes are designed and tested to meet or exceed industry safety standards. They undergo rigorous quality control procedures to ensure their reliability.

  8. Maintenance: Climbing ropes require proper care and maintenance to ensure their longevity and safety. This includes regular inspection for signs of wear and damage, as well as proper coiling and storage.

  9. Belaying and Rappelling: Petzl ropes are compatible with various belaying and rappelling devices, such as belay devices, pulleys, and ascenders, which are essential for safe climbing and descending.

  10. Training and Education: Climbers should be properly trained in rope management, knots, and safety techniques. It's crucial to have the necessary knowledge and skills to use climbing ropes safely.

When selecting a Petzl climbing rope, it's essential to consider your specific climbing needs, the type of climbing you'll be doing, and the environmental conditions you'll encounter. Additionally, always follow the manufacturer's guidelines for rope care, and retire any rope that shows signs of significant wear or damage to ensure your safety while climbing.

User questions & answers

Question: Will it work with 1/2 inch rope
Answer: The Rescucender B50A is designed to work with ropes in the range of 9-13 mm. 1/2" rope is approximately 12.5mm so it will work with this device.
Question: How smooth is the feed, any drag? Looking for something that can handle 11.4mm rope
Answer: I use the Rescucender to TR soloing. It feeds very smoothly and is super easy to use. I have only used it on ropes up to 10.0 mm.
Question: Can this work as an up and down control for roof work? Please advise if I need another type of controller
Answer: I'm not sure what you mean by up and down control. This is a device that grips the roop and lets you ascend normally but you can't descend without manual intervention. (You have to hold the lever to let the rope out. As soon as you release the lever, it grips the rope.) If you are working on a roof with a rope affixed to the apex, then it would keep you from falling as long as you were disciplined enough to keep the rope snug in case the tension isn't enough to pull it out for you.
Question: Does this Rescucender grab the rope with cam action (won't damage rope) or does it have spike teeth which could dig in and damage rope
Answer: To my knowledge the rescucender is the only cam rope ascender/arrester that doesn’t damage a rope under a shock load. It was originally designed by Rock Thompson in 1989 based on the “Soloist”, another rope arresting device he designed as a self-belay for rock climbers. I personally conducted drop test back in the “90’s” when I worked for the University of Nevada Reno’s industrial fire school using the original design and we had no rope damage. I still teach rescue work and I still use rescucenders. We have been using them to acsend ropes and to tighten high lines for years. And there were other’s that also did test with the rescucender and they published their results with similar findings. There is a YouTube clip of one damaging a rope but if you look at the cam it is severely wore and damaged and should never have been used. This new design is really great as there is no more the little wire that people have gotten twisted or wrapped around the rope. I love this new design and the rescucender (both the original and new design) is the only hard ascender I use in rescue work. (Soft ascender being cordage loops tied onto a fixed line using an ascender knot, ie Prussic, Kliemheist, Bachman, etc.) However... High angle rope work is always dangerous, people working in this environment need to obtain professional training and always plan for the unexpected to occur and not totally rely on one piece of gear; always remove any slack in your rope systems to prevent or minimize your chances of having a shock load on your rope system. User questions & answers

Question: Can you rappel with this? I know it's says not for all protection, buts it's also rated for 15kn of force, which is strong. For "just in case
Answer: Petzl does not rate this as rappel rope. However, it is rated to 15KN, which is 15 times the weight of a 220 lb person. So it is adequate for a rappel, but because it is thin (8mm) you should know how to add friction to your rappel device. And it is very short, so put a knot in the end of it so you don't rappel off the end of it. And Steve in Salem is right: DO NOT DYNAMICALLY LOAD THIS ROPE, such as in a fall.
Question: Is this a Dynamic rope for lead climbing
Answer: Hey! According to Petzl's description, this product is a technical hiking cord for installing a hand line when on a hike. Thanks!

Check our spec's against everyone else. We now have 11.0mm rope (not 11.5mm that others call 11mm or 7/16). This is very important as many devices are getting smaller, and have a narrow range of rope sizes they will accept. Our goal is to make sure that the rope stays close to 11mm as possible, when its under tension, has absorbed water/humidity, and filled with dirt. Don't let others fool you with high breaking strength that have elongations as high as 10% even at 300lbs; Some call that static, semi static or some other made up word, we call it rubber band. Its a real really pain to climbing and haul with a rubber band. High elongation rope is designed for rock climbers the need it for fall arrest, not for rope access and rescue.

  • A true 11.0mm (not 10.5 or 11.4mm) static kernmantle rope providing dependability and durability in the most demanding environments. Size is very important, because devices require very specific diameters of rope to function properly
  • CERTIFIED to UL Life Safety Rope Specifications, NFPA 1983:2012 Edition Standards and Z359.1 ANSI Standards for Personal Fall Arrest Systems
  • Minimum Breaking Strength: 33.3kn (7500 lbs)
  • Elongation: 2.2% at 1.35kn (300lbs) 4.4% at 2.7kn (600 lbs) 7.4% at 4.4kn (1000lbs)
  • The Best Size, The Best Elongation, The Best CERTIFIED Certifications of any rope in the market today.

User questions & answers

Question: I use tiblock or top rope soloing, ... would this be an option
Answer: I would not use a Tiblock to rope solo. It is not a very safe option. This would be much safer and easier to use. I prefer a Choll or Wren soloist to micro traxion. The micro trazion is part of my hauling and glacier rescue kit.
Question: Any chance it would hold 100-200 pounds on 4.5 uhmwpe braided polyethylene cord. it is for a block and tackle to move trees off the trail
Answer: This is probably not the best choice - trees are heavy - the device is rated for bigger ropes. Describe what you are trying to do and we can come up with a better solution for you.
Question: I want to raise a 2” rigid pipe about 22’ in tight location. I will have an anchor point at 32’. I will be on ladder w portable hoist. How2 lash
Answer: A few wraps of chain or prusik knot using rope.
Question: How badly do the teeth in the pulley device chew up ropes? I have Tiblocs for emergency, but judging by the teeth on them I don't want to use them
Answer: The teeth are there just to engage the cam. The teeth themselves should not be holding any weight. They may accelerate the sheath getting fuzzy, though, if you use it a lot. The case is not the same for the Tibloc as it has to be set. If you don't set it to where the carabineer binds into the rope, it is possible to have the teeth themselves carrying some load and damage the sheath of the rope.
