13 best climbing pulleys

Climbing pulleys are essential pieces of equipment used in rock climbing and various outdoor activities where ropes are employed. They serve to reduce friction and provide mechanical advantage, making it easier to manage ropes, haul gear, or perform rescues. Here are key points about climbing pulleys:

  1. Function: Climbing pulleys are designed to redirect ropes and reduce the friction generated when ropes run over fixed points, such as carabiners or anchor points. This reduction in friction allows climbers to exert less effort when pulling ropes or hauling loads.

  2. Types of Pulleys:

    • Single Pulleys: These have a single wheel or sheave and are used for basic rope redirection. They are commonly used in belay systems and for setting up simple mechanical advantage systems.
    • Double Pulleys: Double pulleys have two sheaves and are ideal for more complex hauling systems and rescue operations. They provide greater mechanical advantage and can handle heavier loads.
    • Tandem Pulleys: Tandem pulleys consist of two single pulleys mounted side by side. They are used for tandem rope systems, such as zip lines or certain rescue scenarios.
    • Rescue Pulleys: These are designed for heavy-duty use in rescue operations. They are often larger and more robust to handle substantial loads.
  3. Materials: Climbing pulleys are typically made of lightweight and durable materials like aluminum or stainless steel. These materials are chosen for their strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance.

  4. Sheave Bearings: Pulleys often feature ball bearings or bushings in their sheaves to reduce friction further and allow for smoother rope movement. Bearings make it easier to pull ropes under load.

  5. Carabiner Compatibility: Many climbing pulleys have attachment holes or clips that are compatible with carabiners, making them easy to attach to harnesses, anchors, or other gear.

  6. Uses:

    • Belay Systems: Climbing pulleys are used in belay systems, such as the "Pulley Method" for belaying a second climber, to reduce friction and make it easier to feed or take in rope.
    • Hauling Systems: They are employed in hauling systems to lift gear or injured climbers, distributing the force and reducing the effort required.
    • Rescue Operations: In rescue scenarios, pulleys are used for various tasks like raising or lowering casualties, performing crevasse rescues, and more.
    • Rope Access Work: Climbing pulleys are used in rope access work for tasks like building maintenance, window cleaning, and inspection.
  7. Safety: It's essential to use climbing pulleys that meet industry standards and have a high breaking strength to ensure safety during climbing and rescue operations.

  8. Maintenance: Regular inspection and maintenance of climbing pulleys are crucial to ensure their proper function and safety. Check for signs of wear, damage, or deformation.

Climbing pulleys are versatile tools that play a vital role in both recreational climbing and professional rope work. Choosing the right pulley for your specific needs and ensuring proper maintenance are essential for safe and efficient operations.

User questions & answers

Question: Height width are given what is the depth or 3rd dimension of the unit
Answer: About 1 5/16".
Question: Where is this manufactured
Answer: I just pulled mine out and it does not say. It does have a certification label on it, however, GM is not a brand that any serious vendor carries for life support. I am sure it is made in China or equivalent and is a lesser copy of a more serious and expensive product. I used mine for non life support and it does fine. I purchased a pair of really good pulleys which look similar and retired these.
Question: What's the warranty
Answer: I don't know the answer to that. Have you tried contacting GM Climbing? I use a couple of these and haven't had any issues.
Question: Does the pulley have ball bearings
Answer: I don’t think so. To me it appears to ride on a bushing. That doesn’t mean I’m right, though. I use this as part of a mast climbing rig on my sailboat. Ascender, gri-gri and this “pulley”, this allows me to jug up the mast (kind of a three part, winch assist) and rap off on the gri. Seems to run freely, limited usage, no complaints.

User questions & answers

Question: This pulley doesn't have an actual becket but is there room under the sheave for a carabiner
Answer: Not a good practice.
Question: does this pulley have metal bearings
Answer: Yes, mine does.
Question: Need a pulley that can handle repetition and heat for an exercise rope. Regular pulleys get warm quick and become defective. Will this do
Answer: Thank you! I will be using it in a high repetition exercise of my legs and arms. The repetition constantly reverses the motion. Weight on it will be much less than 150 Ib. As long as it can handle the heat generated. I guess I have to try and see.
Question: where is this manufactured
Answer: Not sure, but Google searching seems to turn up China from most discussions. I'm using mine as an anchor pulley on a drift boat, so it's not a life or death thing for me. Seems like climbers "out there" aren't too impressed.

Question: Is this a prusik minded pulley
Answer: yes
Question: Where is this pulley manufactured? does it say made in usa on it
Answer: Doesn't explicitly say "made in" but does have "CA USA" stamped on it.
Question: Does the pully have bearings
Answer: It states on this page that it has dual stainless steel ball bearings. So, ignore the comment about "linear" bearings (there is no such thing).
Question: dose it lock on place so you can climb up
Answer: No. It doesn't have a locking mechanism. The Petzl Pro Traxion would be an example of a locking pulley that could be rigged to allow you to ascend. With most locking pulleys for climbing, be sure your rope diameter is compatable with your device, avoiding damage to the rope, the device, or you.

User questions & answers

Question: what is the safe working load for this set
Answer: If you are asking for the maximum breaking load for everything in the system that is given both in the description and on the devices themselves (you can zoom in on the picture) if however you are wondering what the swl is to my understanding (and I’m not an expert) climbing equipment is really only rated at the maximum breaking load. It’s up to you to decide (for reasons I won’t get into here) how far you want to push the equipment based off that rating. In general (again not an expert) stick to safe working loads ratios of 4:1 and up depending on weather you’re planning on having them static load or dynamically load. Hope this helps.
Question: waht size rope can these take
Answer: These are rated up to 12mm rope.
Question: Does the prusik loop have one or two eyes sewn in? Pic appears to show single
Answer: One
Question: So will this fit 1/2 inch climbing line
Answer: Yes, it fits. No room to spare and it’s bigger than recommend rope size.

User questions & answers

Question: Breaking strength is 7100 lbs. What's the safe working load
Answer: The standard for life safety is a 15:1 safety factor. That would calculate to a 473 Lb. safe working load (which complies with the "two person" load standard.) The standards for other uses vary. For example, for technical large animal rescue, the standard is a 5:1 safety factor or 1,420 Lbs.
Question: Would this provide a really smooth glide for home gym with 1/4 cable
Answer: This pulley is designed for use with larger diameter rope - not steel cable. At 32 kiloNewtons (i7194lbs) capacity, would be serious overkill for home gym use anyway. Climbing, rescue and arborist' activities are better uses for this pulley.
Question: Can you use this as a snatch block for self-recovery on an ATV
Answer: The load rating is 32kN, or just over 7,000 Lbs. It will handle up to 13mm (1/2inch) kernmantle or wire rope with no problem, although I would expect it to experience less wear on the sheave when used with nonmetallic rope or cable. Your weak point is likely to be what the pulley is attached to. I would recommend that you make certain that your shackle is equally rated, whether you use this pulley or something else. For the record, we use this model for technical rescue, have over a dozen in service on different response units, and have found them to be totally reliable. (We're careful to use them within their load ratings and keep them clean.)
Question: Where's it made
Answer: China.. I bought two double pulleys and when they were use only on one side one side of each of them seized..I then bought 6 single pulleys from a supplier out of the states (still a chinese product) but they seem to be working fine.

User questions & answers

Question: do these pulleys use sealed ball bearings or do they use bushings
Answer: It said ball bearing in the description.
Question: Can I use 1/2 in rope
Answer: 1/2" = 12.7 mm. Max D with this pulley is 12 mm, so NO. Try math.
Question: Can this be used as a single pulley
Answer: As in like a self rescue kit? If that’s the question yes but you also have to run a single micro pulley as well otherwise the double will run off at a canter and that may wear on ur rope but I guess I’m a pinch it wouldnt matter. Cause ya gotta do what ya gotta do sometimes right? Hope this helps—
Question: Can I use these to winch our stumps with my 12,000lbs winch equipped with a 3/8” cable
Answer: I'm sure there's a hefty safety factor with these, so I'd give it a go in your shoes-- BUT with two important precautions: 1) make sure the ROPE you use with these blocks will handle 3,000 pounds, no sweat, otherwise the rope will break before you realize the potential of these blocks-- probably just a nuisance, not dangerous. 2) I assume you'll affix the blocks to another tree with a tree saver and shackle. Make sure that arrangement is much stronger than your winch. If it breaks, you and/or your truck will be directly in the line of fire. Do it right and the worst that can happen is you'll break these blocks-- which will answer your question!

User questions & answers

Question: Can this pulley be worked with a nylon cable for home gym
Answer: Depends on the cable size and bend radius the nylon cable is specified to tolerate at the tension you will be using it at. You should select a pulley/block designed for the size cable you are using, slightly larger if a an exact match can not be found. If the saddle is too large it will increase the amount of flattening/distortion the cable will experience each time it goes around the pulley. The radius of the wheel in this pulley is relatively small. The smaller the radius the more wear on the cable each time it moves through the pulley due to the strands of the cable rubbing on each other since the strands further from the center of the wheel travel over a greater diameter than the strands closer to the center of the wheel. If this is to replace or add a pulley on a commercially designed gym you should attempt to match the radius/width of the existing pulleys.
Question: will this work with 9.9mm rope
Answer: Of course, 1/2inch In the description is the max rope. 9.9mm also could work
Question: What is the maximum size gofit rubber power tubes that this will handle
Answer: 5/8” round
Question: Will this work with 15mm rope
Answer: The maximum size of rope could be less than or equal to 16mm, I hope you find this helpful. Finally, thanks for your question!

User questions & answers

Question: What size cable is recommended for this trolley? Is a 1/4" too small
Answer: I'm using it on 1/4" steel cable and it works fine
Question: What size poly cable would be too big
Answer: 1/2” is the limit I think.
Question: What are the manufacturer recommendations for cable sizes & weight bearings - they fo not list - i'd appreciate advise (answer in english, plz) - tku
Answer: quarter inch / 250 lbs.
Question: Is there a brake or braking system compatible with this trolley
Answer: There is no brake. The 'brake' is the tree you're going to, which if too hard of a hit, use a spring coil stopper or less slope. I don't know of these coming with a brake.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this for Tyrolean traverse? Is the wheel made of steel
Answer: The wheel is aluminum, on rope its fine. On cable you would have to be gentle and no speed. (its not a zipline pulley)
Question: What is the seize
Answer: The silver wheel is 5/8" wide with a 1-1/4" diameter. The total dimension of the unit is 1-3/4" wide by 2-5/8" long. I run both a 1/2" and 5/8" rope through it just fine The 5/8" is a little tight but still runs smooth. This is a great little pulley. Light weight, strong and easy to use.
Question: Is this a prussik-minding pulley
Answer: Yes it is prussik minding
Question: Okay, i am new at this and wanted a pulley for my emergency bag. i understand the kn is for weight lift, but the wll is what? thanks
Answer: The working load limit (WLL) (in kilonewtons) is a recommendation by the manufacturer (Sometimes stamped on the gear as WLL). A safety factor (SF) equals the minimum breaking strength (MBS) / divided by the working load (WL) the amount your lifting. 1 kN equals 225lbs (approx). You may be subject to guidelines/rules for your industry. Typically Mountain Rescue / Cave Rescue goes for a safety factor of 5, Industrial Screwlinks SF 4, Search and Rescue SF 7, Fire Departments(NFPA) SF 10,12 or 15 depending on department.Pulley's are force multipliers which is good and bad. If you have a 1 kN (225lbs) cinder block attached to a rope through the pulley and your holding the rope parallel. Your hand is holding 1 kN, each side of the rope has tension (T) of 1 kn, whatever the pulley is attached to has a force on it of 2 kn (450lbs) make sure its strong. If you attached the pulley to the block, tie one of the rope to something high and lift the other end with your hand, you have to 2:1 (think letter U shaped). The force on the pulley is 1kN (225lbs), whatever the rope is attached only has a load of 1/2 kN (112.5lbs), Each side of the rope only that your holding has (T) tension of 1/2 kN (112.5lbs) and you only have to lift 1/2kn (112.5 lbs). The first way stresses gear and anchors, the second way is 1/2 the stress on gear and 1/2 the work.
