11 best lightweight mountaineering tent

A lightweight mountaineering tent is a specialized type of tent designed for use in high-altitude and challenging alpine environments, such as mountain expeditions and climbing trips. These tents are built to withstand harsh weather conditions, provide protection from extreme cold, wind, and snow, and offer a lightweight and compact design for easy transport. Here are some key features and considerations related to lightweight mountaineering tents:

  1. Durability:

    • Mountaineering tents are constructed from robust materials to withstand the rigors of alpine conditions. High-quality ripstop nylon or polyester fabrics are commonly used for the tent body and rainfly.
  2. Weather Resistance:

    • These tents are designed to handle extreme weather conditions, including heavy snow, strong winds, and low temperatures. Look for tents with reinforced seams, waterproof coatings, and snow skirts to prevent drafts and snow buildup.
  3. Four-Season Versatility:

    • Lightweight mountaineering tents are suitable for year-round use, making them versatile for various seasons and weather conditions.
  4. Free-Standing Design:

    • Many mountaineering tents have a free-standing or semi-freestanding design, which means they can be set up without the need for stakes or anchors. This feature is valuable in rocky or snow-covered terrain.
  5. Ventilation:

    • Proper ventilation is essential to reduce condensation inside the tent. Look for tents with adjustable vents and mesh panels to promote airflow while keeping insects out.
  6. Lightweight:

    • These tents prioritize weight savings to make them easier to carry during strenuous mountain climbs. Lightweight materials and minimalist designs contribute to their overall weight efficiency.
  7. Pole Material:

    • Tent poles are typically made of lightweight aluminum or carbon fiber to keep the tent's overall weight down.
  8. Packability:

    • Lightweight mountaineering tents are designed to pack down into a compact size, making them suitable for backpacking and expeditions where space is limited.
  9. Livability:

    • While lightweight, these tents often provide enough space for occupants and their gear. Look for tents with vestibules for additional storage and entrance space.
  10. Color:

    • Brightly colored tents are easier to spot in snowy or low-visibility conditions, enhancing safety in the mountains.
  11. Setup:

    • The tent should be easy to set up, even in challenging weather conditions. Color-coded or simple pole designs can be a helpful feature.
  12. Price Range:

    • Lightweight mountaineering tents can vary significantly in price, so consider your budget and specific needs when selecting one.
  13. Footprint:

    • A footprint or ground cloth can protect the tent floor from abrasion and moisture. It's a useful accessory to consider.

In summary, a lightweight mountaineering tent is an essential piece of equipment for climbers and adventurers heading into alpine environments. When choosing one, prioritize durability, weather resistance, weight, and features that suit the specific conditions you'll encounter on your mountaineering expeditions.

User questions & answers

Question: Does your tent have a seam across the bottom of the floor? Does it leak at the seam
Answer: To answer your question, yes there is interior pouches, I have hung a light off the zipper of the center divider which divides the tent in two, It's a good tent, On one of my camp outsthere was a hard gust of wind when i was breaking the tent down down, it lifted the tent up and fractured one of the poles. i contacted Browning and received an over whelmingly cool warranty service, replaced no questions asked, they stand behind there product, an i am not only happy but impressed. Thanks, Mark Woodburn
Question: Is it 3.5lbs with everything included (tent, poles, fly, stakes, etc
Answer: No there is not, I applied additional sealant to the tent just as a failsafe. This tent is no question the highest quality I have ever purchased and it is deserving of the Browning name.
Question: I see the pack weight but not dimensions. How big is this guy packed up
Answer: I haven’t had any problems with seat repeatedly becoming wet. I take the chair to church, ball games,, swimming pool and beach and have no issues. I have owned the chairs for two years. Also the seat dries very fast.
Question: What is the center height
Answer: I haven't actually weighed the chair, but I would say that the 9 lb weight is accurate. I have no problems lifting the chair to move it, and I am in my 70s.

User questions & answers

Question: With the full fly on, is this tent ok in hot summer conditions or does it get too hot inside? Enough ventilation
Answer: Doesn't have a separate pole for the rainfly. It sits on the 2 tent poles. Yes you can roll both sides. It is a very nice tent. I really like it.
Question: Is this a free standing tent that once set up two people can pick it up and move it without any collapse? Of course, without the stakes and fly on
Answer: No
Question: I live in the north east and am wondering how this tent will be when camping in the summer. Is there enough ventilation with the fly on
Answer: Hi Hannah - The MSR Lightning Ascent snowshoes do not come with a carrying bag. MSR does sell a bag separately that works with 22" and 25" snowshoes. - The MSR Customer Service Team
Question: Does this tent have full privacy or does it have the clear window in the rainfly like others in this brand? Wanting a full privacy tent
Answer: I'd suggest the 30 inch Snowshoes as that is the size I have and I weigh 175 pounds and am 5.9. I have used them in soft snow several times and 30 inches does not seem overly long for me. I figure that the extra few inches help distribute my weight better as I usually carry a 40 plus pound pack when I snowshoe as part of my Search and Rescue equipment.
Question: Does this tent have a pole for the rainfly, or does it just sit on the 2 tent poles? Can you roll back both sides of the vestibule
Answer: Dont know. I wear Merrill hiking boot. Have never worn snowboard boots.

ALPS Mountaineering Koda 3 Tent: 3-Person 3-Season

ALPS Mountaineering

Based on 2 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The new for 2019 ALPS Mountaineering Koda 3 Tent: 3-Person 3-Season is inspired by ALPS's best-selling Taurus tent to provide you with a fully featured, high quality tent for backpacking or weekend camping trips with friends or family. What sets the Koda apart from the Taurus is its half mesh walls that ensure you and your two tent mates keep comfortable through muggy summer nights while the full-coverage fly keeps everyone protected from late spring rain showers. To further enhance weather protection, ALPS coated and factory seam sealed the fly and floor and added waterproof fly buckles to help keep you, your friends, and your gear dry. The lightweight poles, quick assembly, and roomy vestibules make the tent an easy choice when you arrive at the campsite after the sun sets.

  • Material: [fly] 75D 185T polyester, 1500mm urethane coating, [floor] 75D 185T polyester, 2000mm urethane coating
  • Capacity: 3-person
  • Season: 3-season
  • Wall Type: double
  • Freestanding: yes

User questions & answers

Question: does it include a footprint
Answer: Good question. The ventilation of the Taurus 5 is SO-SO, in my opinion. While it is absolutely designed as a shelter against rain, the vestibule designed full length fly restricts airflow more than other designs. The vestibule "doors" can be pulled back and fastened to the sides of the tent which will allow airflow through the front and rear doors of the tent. The top also has a mesh material to allow ventilation. In my opinion, however, this tent is best suited as a shelter from bad weather. If you are camping in the heat of the summer and rain is not your biggest concern, then this tent might be too warm. I use mine in the Great Lake area of the USA where temperatures tend to be cooler than the south and we get a lot of rain, so it is appropriate.I use my Taurus 5 as a cool weather tent.
Question: Are those pols aluminium or fiberglass
Answer: It has a flap of fabric that zips over the inside of the large window on the door, so you can have privacy if you like. Once the rain fly is closed, there is also privacy even with open windows (obviously).

User questions & answers

Question: Can a person of average height stand up inside this tent
Answer: Widest is 36 inches wide and tapers down to about 30
Question: Do the clear plastic windows on the rain fly start to leak after a couple seasons of use? Do they crack/get small holes, or do they stay water tight
Answer: I used the tent for 342 miles on the PCT. This is a double walled tent so condensation on the inside is very little to zero. I have this tent and will sell it to you for $25. No holes, rips or wear spots. For long distant hiking it is heavy at 4.5lbs.
Question: What is the approximate length of the Taurus 6, with the fly on? Thanks
Answer: To be honest I haven't had any problems with condensation that I have noticed. I live in GA as well and have been on a couple of weekenders in the North Georgia AT. Granted, however, I've used this tent in fall/winter as I have a nemo 1p for my spring/summer hikes. Hope this helped.
Question: Does it come with a carrying case or bag
Answer: The size is the main difference. dimensions of the 1.0 are 42 x 94 x 36, the dimensions of the 1.5 are 48 x 96 x 36.

Question: what are the actual floor dimensions
Answer: Aluminum and they’re great. Shopping for a tent aluminum poles is what I’d be looking for.
Question: Is this tent exactly the same as the alps taurus 4 outfitter? it this simply a private label (and different color) but identical in every other way
Answer: With the fly on and totally zipped up, this tent would be hot in a hot humid environment like Florida in the summer.
Question: What is the actual color of this tent and its rain fly? The vendors show browns, tans and greens. However, the customer photos show a grey rainfly
Answer: two people can easily pick it up n move it............i love this tent n i've had a few......nice standup height inside but of course that makes it problematic in windy conditions.......20mph+ it takes a line or two to a tree to keep it from leaning too much.

User questions & answers

Question: would it fit queen air bed
Answer: Hello, the queen bed will fit but push against the wall at both ends especialy with a higher mattress as the walls slope in.. I use a 13 Inch high Intex full and it leaves space on one side to store and dress. Better to go with the Lynx 6 person if you would like to use a queen mattress that's got any height to it. If you don't need any floor space then go for it!
Question: what is the waterproof index of the fly and the bottom of the tent
Answer: Hello, the coating on the fly is 1500mm polyester, and the coating on the floor is 2000mm polyester. I hope this answer finds you well. Thanks!
Question: Does this fit nicely in a backpack in terms of weight/size
Answer: I say yes, it weighs under 7 lbs packed and the packed size is 7" x 23.5". Someone please find me a tent that is 7'6 x 8'6 (64 sq ft.) that has these specifications? This is the roomiest backpacking tent you will find. I can easily tie it to the bottom or the side of my backpack. If you want a lot of tent space and the flexibility of a backpacking tent, this is the way to go.
Question: What type of tent poles does this tent include
Answer: Hello, this is Elise with ALPS Mountaineering. The tent poles are aluminum. I hope this finds you well. Happy camping.

User questions & answers

Question: would it fit queen air bed
Answer: There is some confusion in the description. I assumed by the wording that it did. The vestibule does have a footprint but the tent floor does not. I bought a footprint at bass pro for the tent floor. Alpine I believe is the manufacture. As far as I can tell that is the only brand sold at bass pro.

User questions & answers

Question: Looking at this tent, but wondering if I would need to buy a tarp to go under the tent in case of wet ground? How waterproof is the tent floor
Answer: The zcM0800-WT is designed to work with thin film tapes such "Scotch tape". Many masking tapes would be more suited for other tape dispensers from START International. Contact START using "Live Expert" and they can advise the correct tape dispenser for your tape and application.
Question: what are the inner dimensions of the tent only
Answer: A "roll holder" is also known as a core holder. The zcM0800-WT comes with a 1" and 3" core holders. If your 1/2" wide tape has a 1" or 3" hole in the middle, the zcM0800-WT will be able to accommodate it.
Question: What is the packed size
Answer: Replacement blades are available for purchase on Amazon. The ZCM0800P140 is a set of 10 replacement blades for the zcM0800-WT
Question: Does this tent have a full rain fly
Answer: The zCM0800-WT was not designed to cut heavy, thick masking tape. This entry-level tape dispenser can only cut simple film tapes such as scotch tape. You need to purchase the zcM1000C to handle the much thicker masking tape. The zcM1000C has a much stronger blade, stronger motor, and was created to handle “flimsy” tapes such as masking. You can purchase the zcM1000C on Amazon.

Question: Whats the coldest it can be without being very uncomfortable with a good sleeping bag
