3 best winter sleeping bag

Winter sleeping bags are essential gear for cold-weather camping and outdoor activities. These specialized sleeping bags are designed to provide warmth and insulation in freezing temperatures. Here's what you need to know about winter sleeping bags:

  1. Temperature Ratings: Winter sleeping bags are typically rated for specific temperature ranges.Look for bags with lower temperature ratings, such as those rated for 0°F (-18°C) or lower, to ensure you stay warm in sub-freezing conditions. Keep in mind that these ratings can vary between manufacturers, so check product details carefully.

  2. Insulation Types:

    • Down Insulation: Down-filled sleeping bags are known for their exceptional warmth-to-weight ratio. They offer excellent insulation and compressibility, making them ideal for cold-weather camping. However, down loses its insulating properties when wet, so it's crucial to keep it dry.
    • Synthetic Insulation: Synthetic-filled bags are more resistant to moisture than down, making them a better choice in wet conditions. While they may not provide the same warmth-to-weight ratio as down, they are more affordable and still offer good insulation.
  3. Shape and Size: Winter sleeping bags come in various shapes, including mummy and rectangular. Mummy bags are more tapered, which helps trap heat and reduce cold air pockets. Ensure that the bag you choose provides enough room for you to sleep comfortably while minimizing dead air space, which can make you feel colder.

  4. Hood and Draft Collar: Look for a sleeping bag with an insulated hood and a draft collar. The hood helps keep your head warm, while the draft collar prevents cold air from entering the bag through the neck opening.

  5. Zipper: Sleeping bags often feature full-length zippers for easy entry and exit. Some bags have anti-snag zippers to prevent frustrating snags when opening or closing the bag.

  6. Water-Resistant Shell: A durable and water-resistant shell fabric can help protect the sleeping bag's insulation from moisture and snow.

  7. Compression and Packability: Consider how compact the sleeping bag is when packed, as this can be important for backpacking and winter camping. Down-filled bags usually compress more than synthetic ones.

  8. Additional Features: Some winter sleeping bags come with extra features such as interior pockets for storing small items, hang loops for airing out the bag, and foot vents to regulate temperature.

  9. Price and Brand: Prices for winter sleeping bags can vary widely based on factors like insulation type, brand reputation, and additional features. Consider your budget and research different brands to find the right balance between quality and cost.

  10. Care and Maintenance: Properly store and care for your winter sleeping bag to extend its lifespan. Regularly clean and air out the bag, and follow manufacturer instructions for washing and storage.

Choosing the right winter sleeping bag is crucial for a comfortable and safe camping experience in cold weather. Prioritize warmth, insulation type, and durability to ensure you stay cozy during your winter adventures.

User questions & answers

Question: how small does it compress down to
Answer: When you get it new it is about 20x12 but I put it in a compression bag and got it down to around 12x12 . I t wasn't easy getting it that small I had to put my knee on it to smash it and really pull on the straps. It is a little heavy for hiking but it has kept me very warm into the mid teens in a two person hiking tent with a klymit insulated static v sleeping pad under me. I f you can carry the extra weight it is a decent alternative to a more expensive down bag.
Question: I need to know the weight of the sleeping bag please
Answer: It's brutally heavy. If you're asking about weight, this is NOT the bag you want.
Question: Can you wash it on washing machine
Answer: Technically yes. A standard wash may cause the internal insulating fill material to clump together during the spin cycle. This will cause the bag to be uncomfortable and loss it's ability to properly keep you warm. I've ruined sleeping bags this way years ago as a kid. My front loading washer machine was a "hand washing" setting selection with the option to turn the spin cycle off. I wash the bag twice (once with the soap reservoir about one-third full of HE Laundry Soap and a second hand wash cycle with just water to ensure the sleeping bag is properly rinsed. Use cold water on both washing cycles. Finally, let the bag drip dry on a drying line outdoors or indoors in your laundry room or garage. Make sure to turn the bag inside out after 8 to 12 hours of drying so it can finish drying properly. This washing/drying method keeps my sleeping bags from being ruined. Use a quad size washing machine at your local laundry mat to wash your sleeping bag(s) if your current washing machine is too small to handle this sleeping bag. Air dry on line at home. A tower fan pointed at the sleeping bag while it's on the drying line will help the bag dry much faster. Sleeping bag liners are a great way to help it stay clean. They are sold in cotton, satin, silk and various other materials. I find the silk bags are extremely comfortable. The sporting goods section at your local Walmart should sell cotton sleeping bag liners next to the sleeping bag section. Hope this helps you out. Question: How do you get the sleeping bag back into the stuff sack? I bought is and we can't get it back in
Answer: Most if not all better quality sleeping bags I've bought came with a stuff sack and a storage bag. The storage bag is much bigger and breathes to help preserve loft. (An oversized cotton pillow case would work) As others have said, a stuff sack is for stuffing. Stick the foot in and start stuffing. Sometimes it's a bit of a challenge. I think manufactures tend to provide undersized bags so they can claim they pack down smaller. BTW, this would not make a good backpacking bag. It's heavy and bulky. It would be fine for car camping though. Or for short winter backpack trips if you're on a really tight budget.

User questions & answers

Question: Says "water proof; is it breathable
Answer: These magnets are being used on a white magnetic / dry erase board, so I couldn’t honestly say if they would scratch a stainless steel surface or not. The magnets themselves are light weight, if anything would scratch the surface it may be the little ones fingernails getting the magnets off the fridge. Hope this helps.
Question: Can two of them zip together
Answer: Primarily for snorkeling. Didn't want to carry long fins when traveling.
Question: Is this rated in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit? Getting mixed and greatly varied messages
Answer: Wow! My husband gi into the Cressi # 11 shoes. I would imagine you could fit into the # 12. If it didn’t fit pefectlly, Bring Dr. Scholl’s inserts. That’s what my husband did and he had a ball!! (Always bring 2 Dr. Scholl’s, can’t hurt! Good luck/-enjoy!
Question: Why dont you stop with the jank false description?? Its 50 degrees off from being a zero degree bag
Answer: Tough question - I know that size 9 is a good fit for medium but not sure about width - but better a bit tight than to loose.

User questions & answers

Question: Where is it Made From
Answer: Made in China
Question: is the bag washable
Answer: I never got the chance to wash this bag, because I returned it after the first use. This bag is not rated at the temperature it states that it is and is not a good buy.
Question: Can two of these bags be joined together
Answer: If you open it to join two, you would have to turn 1 upside down. 1 head part that extends will be upside down. I would buy 2 without the head part if you want to join them. Best of luck.
Question: Is there piping on the inside of the flannel bag, next to the zipper, to keep air flow out
Answer: Not sure, but this bag should not be rated for 32 degrees. It will not keep you warm for that temperature. I would guess that that the temperature rating should be for 55 degrees F.
