Answer:	It is NOT waterproof. I actually was disappointed to find that this is more difficult to clean than I thought as water and sand clings to it at the beach. I am also a registered nurse and I would not recommend that idea in general for a dementia patient as the parachute material can cause shearing on the skin. Maybe try a water resistant mattress protector instead with washable bedding on top. Best of luck!

Answer:	It is like a synthetic parachute type material. I have only used it on beach sand and let it dry before folding up. Just shook all the sand off it and folded it back up into the pouch. It also could be rinsed off and hung over a railing to dry as well - which I would do if I was traveling and really needed to clean it. It is very handy for a trip where you need to pack very light but are going to need something to sit on at a beach. I am about to take it on another trip. It seats 2 adults with plenty of room in lounge position. So far I haven't felt the need to actually wash it , but maybe if I was going to use it for a tablecloth instead of putting it on the ground for seating I would put it in the washing machine on gentle, cold and tumble on low for 5 min. Then I hang outside to get completely dry. Which is what I do with our vinyl outdoor tablecloths.
